6. Craftopia: A survival RPG genre-mashup, under development by Japanese Indie developer PocketPair. This multiplayer survival action game combines features such as hunting, farming, hack-and-slash, building, and exploration. Think Zelda BOTW meets Minecraft. 5. Tree of Life: Oddria: A cartoony open-world survival RPG, currently in the late stages of development at OddOneGames. In this multiplayer MMORPG, players can expect housing, PvP combat, and PvE world exploration. For a game with an early 2021 release, very little is known about how the PVP systems will work. 4. The Day Before: We had to include at least one zombie survival RPG on this list, so we chose something absolutely fantastic. The game is still in development, but has a pretty good gameplay trailer that shows off the potential of this post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world. Think of a game like Rust, but with zombies. It goes without saying that in this MMO, humankind is far more dangerous than the Zombies, but we have to wait a while before we can survive in this game. (Credit: MYTONA)
3. Valheim: One word for you, Vikings. Survive in a massive wilderness that is filled with all kinds of terrors and dangers, including both monsters and other Vikings. Build a house, a ship, and weapons, to survive this harsh world. That's right, you can build your own Viking longboat and sail to other islands and explore. You can play solo or on private servers with friends. The best part, you can go and download this game right now off steam, as it was officially released on February 2 (Credit: CoffeeStain Studios).
2. Icarus: Crash land on an alien planet, and survive off the land in this earth-like biome. Oh, and don't get killed by those aliens... According to the developers, this survival RPG is set on, "an alien world for the taking." They continue to say, "Icarus is a free-to-play, multiplayer co-operative survival game with persistent metagame progression." It really looks like Rust, especially the way you build stuff, which is a good thing. (Credit: RocketWerkz)
1. AWAY: The Survival Series: You literally play as an animal trying to survive nature. It is the coolest concept we have seen in a long time. This upcoming indie action-adventure game is developed and published by Canadian studio Breaking Walls. It is scheduled to be released in 2021 for PC and PlayStation 4 (Credit: Breaking Walls).
There are at least a dozen survival games slated for 2021. It feels like every day there seems to be a new survival game announced, but this begs the question: what games should we actually be watching?
