15 Once-Famous Actors Who Were Forgotten by Hollywood

1-15

Cropped cuba gooding jr jerry maguire

1. Cuba Gooding Jr.

Winning an Oscar for Jerry Maguire should have given Cuba Gooding Jr. access to scripts worthy of that explosive charisma. Instead, his filmography took some bewildering detours through Snow Dogs, Boat Trip, and Daddy Day Camp. Comedy wasn’t inherently the problem; material that reduced him to frantic mugging was. His Emmy-nominated performance in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story later offered a welcome reminder of the dramatic actor underneath all those questionable rental-night choices. | © TriStar Pictures

Cropped Orlando Bloom lord of the rings

2. Orlando Bloom

Between Legolas and Will Turner, Orlando Bloom practically owned the market for handsome men navigating impossible adventures. Building an identity outside The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean proved trickier, especially without an equally defining contemporary role. His subsequent choices have been more interesting than the faded-heartthrob label suggests: The Cut puts him through a boxer’s punishing weight cut, while Deep Cover lets him be funny. Apparently, there is life after the cheekbones-and-sword business. | © New Line Cinema

Cropped Halle Berry catwoman

3. Halle Berry

The Catwoman jokes have enjoyed a longer shelf life than plenty of successful superhero movies. Unfortunately, they also obscure how much Halle Berry accomplished before and afterward, from her Oscar-winning Monster’s Ball performance to directing and starring in Bruised. Her role opposite Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo in Crime 101 further complicates any disappearance narrative. Berry’s career raises a better question: why has an actress with that range spent so much time having to demonstrate it again? | © Village Roadshow Pictures

Cropped Geena Davis beetlejuice

4. Geena Davis

Imagine having Thelma & Louise and A League of Their Own on your résumé and still watching substantial offers dry up. Geena Davis has described exactly that experience after turning 40, when the career she expected to keep building suddenly became painfully sparse. The Stuart Little films provided work, but hardly replaced the variety of her earlier leading roles. Her experience makes Hollywood’s enthusiasm for celebrating formidable women onscreen look rather selective once those women reach a supposedly inconvenient birthday. | © The Geffen Film Company

Cropped jessica alba fantastic four

5. Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba’s most consequential career move happened away from a film set: founding The Honest Company. The Dark Angel breakout and Fantastic Four star built a consumer-products business while her screen appearances became less frequent, making the usual vanished-actress explanation rather incomplete. She stepped down as chief creative officer in 2024, the same year she headlined Netflix’s Trigger Warning. Playing a Special Forces commando also brought her back to action, a genre she knew well before the boardroom years. | © 20th Century Studios

Cropped hilary swank million dollar baby

6. Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank had something more pressing than protecting her position on Hollywood’s casting lists: caring for her father after a lung transplant. She took three years away from acting, a decision that deserves better than being mistaken for professional rejection. The two-time Oscar winner behind Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby subsequently returned to leading roles, including Ordinary Angels. Her career has had quieter stretches, certainly, but an awards cabinet doesn’t oblige anyone to put work ahead of family. | © Warner Bros.

Cropped Whoopi Goldberg ghost

7. Whoopi Goldberg

A seat at The View keeps Whoopi Goldberg recognizable, but it can also make people forget what a formidable screen actor she is. Compare the wounded restraint of The Color Purple with the glorious comic interference of her Oscar-winning turn in Ghost: that is serious range. Sister Act then gave her a movie built around her particular appeal. Later appearances, including her cameo in the musical The Color Purple, are welcome, though a cameo only allows so much room. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped Wesley Snipes blade

8. Wesley Snipes

Put Wesley Snipes back in Blade’s sunglasses and the supposed distance between star and audience shrinks considerably. His Deadpool & Wolverine appearance reunited him with a role he hadn’t played onscreen since Blade: Trinity, and he told interviewers he hadn’t thought the return possible. That comeback also invites a look beyond the vampire hunting: White Men Can’t Jump and New Jack City showcase very different strengths. The action-star shorthand never quite covered everything he could bring to a movie. | © New Line Cinema

Cropped Taylor Lautner twilight

9. Taylor Lautner

Team Jacob was an enormous fan club, but it wasn’t a transferable business model. Twilight made Taylor Lautner a global heartthrob without guaranteeing audiences would follow him into unrelated projects. His later television work in Cuckoo and Scream Queens explored a comic side that the werewolf marketing campaign had little use for. He also deliberately stepped back to enjoy life outside acting. After that much attention to his torso, having some control over the rest of his life seems reasonable. | © Summit Entertainment

Cropped Taylor Kitsch john carter

10. Taylor Kitsch

Two expensive movies made Taylor Kitsch an easy target: John Carter and Battleship. Their commercial disappointments overshadowed the actor Friday Night Lights viewers already knew could make a troubled character worth caring about. Television subsequently offered him more room, with Waco, American Primeval, and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf supplying substantial roles beyond the blockbuster audition phase. Watching that work, the interesting question becomes why Hollywood was so determined to sell him as a ready-made movie franchise in the first place. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped Mira Sorvino Mighty Aphrodite

11. Mira Sorvino

Mira Sorvino’s career slowdown has a particularly troubling context. Peter Jackson said Miramax discouraged him from considering her for The Lord of the Rings, describing information he later suspected was part of a smear campaign; Harvey Weinstein’s representative disputed his influence over casting. Sorvino had already won an Oscar for Mighty Aphrodite and displayed delightful comic instincts in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Her story demands more scrutiny than a casual shrug about audiences moving on to somebody else. | © Miramax

Cropped Mo Nique

12. Mo’Nique

An Oscar for Precious didn’t translate into the expected flood of major roles for Mo’Nique. Instead, disputes over promotion and industry expectations became a public feud with director Lee Daniels, whom she said had told her she was being blackballed. Daniels eventually apologized publicly, and the pair reunited for The Deliverance. The intervening years remain frustrating to contemplate: a performance that forceful should have sparked curiosity about what she could do next, rather than an extended argument about whether she played Hollywood’s game correctly. | © Lee Daniels Entertainment

Cropped Jean Dujardin the artist

13. Jean Dujardin

American audiences met Jean Dujardin as the irresistible silent-film star of The Artist, then seemed to expect him to relocate permanently into their multiplexes. His career had other geography. Alongside appearances in The Monuments Men, he continued making French films, including the gloriously peculiar Deerskin, which turns an obsession with a jacket into deeply uncomfortable comedy. That willingness to look ridiculous is part of his appeal. An Oscar expanded his audience; it didn’t require him to abandon the one back home. | © JD Prod

Cropped Josh Hartnett

14. Josh Hartnett

Josh Hartnett has accumulated an inconvenient number of major credits for someone regularly described as missing. Oppenheimer, Trap, and Black Mirror brought renewed attention after years spent working outside the blockbuster spotlight that followed Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. He has explained that stepping away from that level of exposure was intentional, while his acting career continued. The distinction matters: Hollywood’s former heartthrob was choosing a different working life, even when celebrity coverage struggled to imagine why anyone would want one. | © Warner Bros. Picture

Cropped Roberto Benigni life is beautiful

15. Roberto Benigni

Roberto Benigni’s exuberant Oscar celebrations for Life Is Beautiful became an American pop-culture memory almost as durable as the film itself. His subsequent career, however, makes more sense when viewed from Italy. He continued directing, performing, and bringing Dante to broad audiences, later playing Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio. Venice awarded him its Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 2021. For someone supposedly misplaced by the movie business, that is a fairly conspicuous place to turn up and collect a trophy. | © Miramax
