15 Actors Who Lost Major Roles Because of Their Appearance

1-15

Cropped Scarlett Johansson ranking intro

15. Scarlett Johansson — The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

David Fincher praised Scarlett Johansson’s audition for Lisbeth Salander, then explained why her sex appeal worked against her. He wanted audiences to gradually connect with the prickly hacker in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, rather than arrive already attracted to the star playing her. Rooney Mara landed the role instead. Johansson’s rejection illustrates a particularly awkward Hollywood predicament: the glamorous image that helps make someone famous can become the reason a director struggles to see them as anybody else. | © Marvel Studios

Cropped Liam Neeson

14. Liam Neeson — The Princess Bride (1987)

At 6-foot-4, Liam Neeson probably doesn’t spend much time being told to stand taller. His meeting for The Princess Bride was an exception. Neeson recalled Rob Reiner looking disappointed when he arrived to discuss playing Fezzik, because the director had expected an actual giant. The encounter ended without him getting the part, which went to André the Giant. For once, the intimidating screen presence that would serve Neeson so well elsewhere simply couldn’t compensate for a missing foot or so. | © StudioCanal

Bella Ramsey

13. Bella Ramsey

What, exactly, is the “Hollywood look”? Bella Ramsey encountered that slippery requirement during one of their earliest auditions, when they were told the director liked their performance but their appearance ruled them out. Ramsey hasn’t named the project, leaving the rejected role a mystery. Their subsequent work in Game of Thrones and The Last of Us makes the feedback particularly frustrating: an expressive, memorable face is an excellent thing to have when your job involves holding an audience’s attention. | © HBO

Timothée Chalamet

12. Timothée Chalamet — The Maze Runner (2014)

Before commanding armies in Dune, Timothée Chalamet couldn’t convince casting teams he had the build for a young-adult action franchise. He recalled auditioning for projects including The Maze Runner and Divergent, only to repeatedly hear that his body wasn’t right. An agent suggested gaining weight, but his breakthrough came through more intimate dramas instead. The amusing part is where that supposedly unsuitable physique eventually ended up: at the center of a science-fiction spectacle involving desert warfare, dynastic conflict, and extremely large worms. | © Legendary Pictures

Alicia Silverstone clueless

11. Alicia Silverstone — My So-Called Life (1994)

Angela Chase could have been played by Alicia Silverstone, but producer Marshall Herskovitz struggled to picture her inhabiting the teenager’s insecurities. He thought Silverstone’s beauty would have shaped her experience of the world too differently from Angela’s. Claire Danes ultimately became the face of My So-Called Life, delivering all that exquisitely uncomfortable adolescent introspection. Silverstone soon found her own defining teenage role in Clueless, where Cher’s popularity and polished appearance were essential ingredients. Apparently, Hollywood needed her in a different school district. | © Paramount Pictures

10. Jada Pinkett Smith — The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)

Playing Will Smith’s girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air required something Jada Pinkett Smith couldn’t supply: extra height. She recalled being turned away because she was too short, with Nia Long ultimately taking the girlfriend role. The rejection acquired an almost suspiciously neat punchline when Pinkett Smith and Smith later married. Television had decided they didn’t look convincing together; real life proceeded without consulting the casting department. Whatever else the audition accomplished, it certainly failed to predict their future as a couple. | © DreamWorks Pictures

Kristen Bell

9. Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell’s early audition feedback offered an impressively useless set of instructions: become prettier, or become weirder. She recalled being considered insufficiently glamorous for the beautiful-girl roles but insufficiently unusual for the eccentric ones. Apparently, the space between those categories had no employment opportunities. Bell didn’t identify a particular lost blockbuster; she described a recurring obstacle. Veronica Mars eventually gave her room to combine vulnerability, wit, and suspicion without requiring her face to announce a personality type before she spoke. | © Netflix

Meryl Streep

8. Meryl Streep — King Kong (1976)

Dino De Laurentiis made one particularly unfortunate assumption when Meryl Streep came in for King Kong: that she couldn’t understand Italian. After the producer insulted her appearance in that language, Streep answered him in Italian, apologizing for disappointing him. Jessica Lange ultimately played the female lead, while Streep left with a rejection story whose punchline practically wrote itself. Losing an audition is unpleasant enough; at least she got to watch the man responsible discover that his private commentary had an audience. | © Netflix

Kate Winslet

7. Kate Winslet

Before Kate Winslet became a leading lady, a drama teacher suggested she should settle for “fat girl” parts. The scrutiny continued professionally, with calls to her agent asking about her weight. These weren’t thoughtful conversations about interpreting a character; they were assessments of which opportunities her body supposedly permitted. Winslet has discussed that pressure without attaching it to one specific major rejection. Her career exposes how little imagination there was in advice that treated a dress size as an acting range. | © Paramount Pictures

David Harbour

6. David Harbour — X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

An audition joke backfired spectacularly when David Harbour tried out for the Blob. He squeezed his stomach to demonstrate his suitability, only to hear afterward that the filmmakers were concerned about his health. Harbour understandably interpreted this as being too fat to play a famously enormous mutant. Kevin Durand ultimately wore the character’s prosthetic bulk instead. The distinction between an actor’s actual body and an approved special effect gave Harbour a rejection story stranger than anything he had prepared for the audition. | © Netflix

Andrew Garfield

5. Andrew Garfield — The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)

Andrew Garfield wanted to be Prince Caspian badly enough to keep pressing his agent about why the part had escaped him. The explanation, he recalled, was that the filmmakers didn’t consider him handsome enough. Ben Barnes got the crown, and Garfield later acknowledged his rival’s good looks with admirable sportsmanship. It’s a strangely specific career disappointment: getting close to a fantasy adventure, then discovering that the apparently insurmountable obstacle wasn’t swordsmanship or acting ability, but somebody else’s idea of princely cheekbones. | © A24

Nia Long michael 1

4. Nia Long — Charlie’s Angels (2000)

Even eyebrows apparently needed approval to join Charlie’s Angels. Nia Long recalled feedback that hers looked too sophisticated, along with the assessment that she appeared too old beside Drew Barrymore. Lucy Liu ultimately played Alex Munday. When Long later discussed the rejection with Barrymore, the star and producer said those comments hadn’t come from her or producing partner Nancy Juvonen. Long had admiration for Liu’s performance, but the explanation she received remains a bizarrely specific objection to an actress auditioning to fight crime. | © Lionsgate

Jessica Chastain

3. Jessica Chastain

Red hair helped Jessica Chastain stand out, which apparently made some casting conversations more difficult rather than easier. She recalled being told she wasn’t pretty enough to book parts and receiving suggestions that she go blonde. No single rejected major role anchors the story; the problem was an industry struggling to place her appearance within its preferred categories. Her eventual success makes that early advice sound particularly unimaginative. A recognizable screen presence was sitting in the audition room, being offered a dye job. | © Universal Pictures

Ryan Gosling

2. Ryan Gosling — The Lovely Bones (2009)

Ryan Gosling’s preparation for The Lovely Bones included drinking melted ice cream and gaining roughly 60 pounds to play grieving father Jack Salmon. According to Gosling, his idea of the character’s appearance clashed with Peter Jackson’s, and poor communication helped derail the casting. Producer Fran Walsh also described his doubts about being old enough for the role. Mark Wahlberg replaced him before filming. Gosling’s own assessment was brutally concise: “fat and unemployed”—a transformation completed without a performance to show for it. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Henry Cavill

1. Henry Cavill — Casino Royale (2006)

A towel-clad James Bond audition left Henry Cavill with some blunt feedback: he recalled Martin Campbell telling him he looked a little chubby. Daniel Craig ultimately secured Casino Royale, although reducing that decision to Cavill’s weight would oversimplify the story. Campbell later praised his audition and appearance while pointing to his youth as a drawback. Cavill took the physical criticism as motivation, but this was a complicated casting decision, not proof that a few extra gym sessions would have delivered 007. | © Netflix

1-15

An audition is supposed to be about acting, which makes “we don’t like your face” particularly frustrating feedback. Hollywood has strong opinions about what a leading star should look like, and even actors who became household names have found themselves on the wrong side of those expectations. These 15 actors were rejected for major roles because of their appearance—a reminder that getting the part can depend on things no amount of rehearsal will fix.
