Actresses Who Endured Real Physical Harm While Filming

1-15

Entertainment - July 30th 2026, 23:30 GMT+2
Jennifer Lawrence Dont Look Up 2021

1. Jennifer Lawrence – Don’t Look Up (2021)

The apocalypse in Don’t Look Up was supposed to be fake; the glass cutting Jennifer Lawrence’s eyelid was not. During an overnight shoot in Brockton, Massachusetts, a controlled explosion sent debris from a shattered window into her face, reportedly cutting her eyelid and leaving her bleeding near the eye. Medics treated her, and production stopped for the remainder of the day before resuming soon afterward. It was classified as a minor injury, but “minor” is doing heroic work when the object involved is airborne glass and the destination is one of the most recognizable faces in movies. | © Netflix

Emily Blunt Edge of Tomorrow 2014

2. Emily Blunt – Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Those bulky exosuits in Edge of Tomorrow were practical creations weighing roughly 85 pounds, which is excellent for texture and less excellent for the human skeleton inside them. During a wire stunt, Blunt was meant to swing through the air, land on her shoulder, and stab an alien. She came down badly and popped two ribs out instead. She has described lingering trouble around her ribs and collarbone, and now treats aerial work as a firm no. Unlike the film’s soldiers, her body did not reset when the day was over. | © Warner Bros.

Charlize Theron The Old Guard 2020

3. Charlize Theron – The Old Guard (2020)

Andy can recover from gunshots in The Old Guard; Charlize Theron had to settle for three operations. While blocking a punch during a fight, she jammed her left thumb and tore the ligament away from the bone, losing much of the use of that hand. With weeks still left on the schedule, she completed a five-day fight and even rode a horse before learning how serious the damage was. Surgery later addressed the thumb and nerve trouble in her arm. Immortality looked wonderfully effortless onscreen because Theron did the very mortal suffering off it. | © Netflix

Halle Berry The Call 2013

4. Halle Berry – The Call (2013)

The Call spends most of its running time with Halle Berry safely planted at a 911 console, then sends her into a killer’s cellar for the climax. That change in job description came at a price: while shooting a fight sequence, Berry fell and hit her head on concrete. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors evaluated what her representative described as a minor head injury and released her in good health. Berry has amassed an intimidating injury history across action films, but concrete remains an especially uncooperative scene partner. | © TriStar Pictures

Blake Lively The Rhythm Section

5. Blake Lively – The Rhythm Section (2020)

A rubber knife and Jude Law’s elbow were enough to suspend The Rhythm Section for six months. During a long, close-quarters fight, Lively lunged forward and smashed her right hand into Law’s block, breaking and dislocating bones while severing a ligament. Two operations followed, the first failing to repair the damage as planned, and the script eventually gave her character a hand injury to explain the brace visible after production resumed. Lively later compared the inside of her hand to feta cheese, which is funny until one remembers that feta is not usually expected to perform stunt choreography. | © Eon Productions

Cropped Uma Thurman Kill Bill Vol 2 2004

6. Uma Thurman – Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)

The most damaging stunt in Kill Bill did not involve a sword, a fight, or even one of the movie’s elaborate set pieces. Thurman was asked to drive a Karmann Ghia along a sandy road in Mexico after voicing concerns about the car and requesting a stunt driver. Reassured by Quentin Tarantino, she drove at speed, lost control, and hit a palm tree. Thurman returned from the hospital with a concussion, injured knees, and a neck brace; she later described lasting damage to her neck and knees. A simple driving insert became the production’s most consequential action scene. | © Miramax

Charlize theron aeon flux

7. Charlize Theron – Æon Flux (2005)

Nine days into Æon Flux, Theron attempted a back handspring on a concrete bridge, failed to get enough height, and landed directly on her neck. The resulting herniated disc sat dangerously close to her spinal cord, forcing production to shut down while she recovered. Theron has said she came within a centimeter of paralysis and eventually required neck surgery, a remarkable price for a film she later dismissed with admirable bluntness as “bad.” Her action career survived the accident magnificently; the disc stayed with her much longer than the movie stayed with most audiences. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped Kate Winslet Titanic 1997

8. Kate Winslet – Titanic (1997)

Rose spends Titanic being battered by an iceberg, a sinking ship, and Cal’s manners; Kate Winslet did not fare much better behind the camera. She chipped a small bone in her elbow, collected deep bruises across both arms, and opened a nasty gash on her knee after slipping on the deck. During one flooded-corridor take, her heavy coat also caught on a gate beneath the water, forcing her to wriggle free with almost no breath left. The famous romance looks polished because the physical misery was carefully kept outside the frame. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped Nicole Kidman Moulin Rouge 2001

9. Nicole Kidman – Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Moulin Rouge! asks Nicole Kidman to float through the movie like a diamond lowered from the ceiling, although gravity repeatedly filed objections. Dance work left her with torn knee cartilage, while a cracked rib healed just long enough to be broken again when costumers tightened Satine’s corset. She also badly injured her ankle in a fall and spent part of the shoot using crutches or a wheelchair, forcing the production to adapt shots around her condition. The spectacle remained deliriously graceful; Kidman’s medical chart was doing an entirely different genre. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped Tippi Hedren Roar 1981

10. Tippi Hedren – Roar (1981)

Roar was conceived as proof that humans and big cats could coexist; its production proved mostly that wild animals do not respect call sheets. During an elephant sequence, the five-ton Tembo lifted Hedren by the ankle and bucked her from his back. She was hospitalized with a fractured ankle and hand, leg abrasions, and complications including phlebitis and gangrene. Elsewhere in the years-long shoot, lions mauled performers and crew, with estimates placing the total number injured at 70 or more. The finished movie plays less like fiction than evidence from a workplace-safety tribunal. | © Filmways Pictures

Michelle Yeoh Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

11. Michelle Yeoh – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Michelle Yeoh had barely begun the courtyard battle in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when a landing destroyed the ACL in her knee. An MRI confirmed a complete tear, sending her to surgery and two months of rehabilitation while Ang Lee reorganized an already difficult shoot around her absence. Yeoh returned in a brace and could initially perform only stationary material; her first scene back was the emotionally devastating finale with Chow Yun-fat. The film made bodies look weightless, but one of its greatest action performers completed it with a knee that had only recently been rebuilt. | © Sony Pictures Classics

Cropped Linda Blair Ellen Burstyn The Exorcist 1973

12. Linda Blair & Ellen Burstyn – The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist extracted two painfully authentic reactions from its leading women. Linda Blair says the lacing securing her to the violently rocking bed came loose, allowing the rig to pound her back and fracture her lower spine; the take containing her real screams stayed in the film. Ellen Burstyn was hurt when a harness yanked her backward and she landed hard on her coccyx, leaving chronic back trouble. The production’s supposed curse makes better folklore, but both injuries had a much less supernatural cause: mechanical force being applied to performers until something gave. | © Warner Bros.

Drew Barrymore Charlies Angels Full Throttle 2003

13. Drew Barrymore – Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003)

The fight between Dylan and Seamus in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle sent both performers to the hospital at different points, but Drew Barrymore got the less glamorous souvenir. Justin Theroux kicked her backward into a chair during one take, and she had forgotten the protective pad meant to shield her tailbone. The impact fractured it, leaving her dependent on a doughnut cushion in public while her stunt double handled the harder work for roughly two months. Nothing punctures action-star mystique quite like explaining to restaurant patrons that the cushion is not for hemorrhoids. | © Universal Pictures

Cropped Margaret Hamilton

14. Margaret Hamilton – The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Margaret Hamilton’s exit through smoke and fire should have been a neat piece of stage machinery. Instead, the trapdoor lowered her too slowly and the flames ignited before she was safely below the set, burning her face and right hand. Her copper-based green makeup had to be removed quickly from damaged skin, adding a distinctly medieval encore to the accident. Hamilton needed roughly six weeks to recover and returned on the condition that she would perform no more fire stunts. Her double later suffered burns in a separate broom explosion, because apparently one warning was insufficient. | © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Cropped Elizabeth Taylor National Velvet 1944

15. Elizabeth Taylor – National Velvet (1944)

At 12, Elizabeth Taylor was already doing substantial riding work for National Velvet, the film that turned her into a star and handed her a lifetime of back trouble. During production, she fell from a horse and fractured her back, an injury that reportedly went undiagnosed for years. Taylor had been born with scoliosis, so the accident compounded an already vulnerable spine and contributed to recurring pain and later surgery. MGM eventually gave her King Charles, the horse that played Pie, as a birthday present—a lovely souvenir from a production that left a far harsher one. | © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Broken bones, torn ligaments, burns, and permanent scars were never part of the script, yet these actresses carried them home after filming ended. Some completed their scenes before seeking medical attention; others spent months recovering from stunts, accidents, and unsafe working conditions. Their performances may look effortless on screen, but the physical damage behind them was painfully real.
