15 Beloved 90s Comedies That Aged Like Milk

1-15

Not so funny now.

Problem Child 2

15. Problem Child 2 (1991)

Problem Child 2 doubled down on everything that made the first movie a guilty pleasure, then forgot to add jokes that actually land today. Junior's chaos plays less like mischief and more like a kid who needs serious intervention, and the film treats every destructive act as a punchline. Adults get humiliated, property gets wrecked, and the movie asks you to laugh at cruelty dressed up as slapstick. Watching it now feels less like nostalgia and more like a checklist of things that would never survive a modern script meeting. | © Universal Pictures

Blank Check

14. Blank Check (1994)

Blank Check hands an eleven-year-old a million dollars and expects the audience to just go along for the ride. The kid buys a mansion, a limo, and an arcade of his own without a single adult questioning where the cash came from. Worse is the subplot pairing him with an adult FBI agent who flirts with him, thinking he's older, in a bit that plays way creepier now than it did in 1994. Disney clearly wanted a Home Alone knockoff, but this one aged into something far more uncomfortable. | © Disney

Senseless

13. Senseless (1998)

Marlon Wayans plays a broke college student who volunteers for an experiment that sharpens his five senses to superhuman levels. The setup sounds fun on paper, but the movie leans hard into gross-out gags and exaggerated reactions that feel more grating than funny now. David Spade's smug rich-kid routine hasn't aged well either, coming across as mean-spirited rather than clever. Watching it today feels like sitting through a sketch that overstayed its runtime by an hour. | © Dimension Films
Big

12. Big (1988)

Big sells itself as a sweet fantasy, but sit with the actual plot for a second. Josh is thirteen inside, yet the movie has no problem letting him start a relationship with Elizabeth, a grown woman who sleeps with him without knowing the truth. Tom Hanks makes the whole thing charming enough that audiences didn't clock how uncomfortable it is. Watch it now and that romance plays less like whimsy and more like a premise nobody thought through. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped Heathers

11. Heathers (1988)

Heathers built its entire dark comedy engine around teen suicide, and that engine feels a lot more unsettling post-Columbine. Winona Ryder's Veronica falls for a guy who is blowing up classmates with homemade bombs, and the film treats it like a quirky rebellion arc instead of a warning sign. Croquet mallets and clever one-liners used to make the body count feel stylish. Now it plays like a slasher movie that forgot it was supposed to be scary. | © New World Pictures

The Cable Guy

10. The Cable Guy (1996)

Jim Carrey signed on for The Cable Guy expecting audiences to laugh, and instead he got a nationwide wave of nervous silence. Ben Stiller's direction pushes the stalker premise so far into discomfort that the jokes barely have room to breathe. Chip Douglas comes across less like a wacky sidekick and more like someone a real person would call the police on. Watching it now, the comedy feels buried under a genuinely unsettling character study nobody asked for. | © Sony Pictures (Columbia Pictures)

Scary Movie

9. Scary Movie (2000)

Scary Movie built an entire identity on shock value, and thirty seconds into the opening scene you already know exactly what kind of humor you signed up for. The Wayans brothers packed the script with rape jokes, gay panic gags, and a level of casual raunch that studios would never greenlight the same way now. Some of the horror-parody bits still land, but the connective tissue between them feels like a relic from a much less careful era. Watching it today means constantly bracing for the next joke that hasn't aged past 2000. | © Dimension Films

Zoolander

8. Zoolander (2001)

Zoolander squeaks into this list on a technicality since it dropped in 2001, but its DNA is pure late-90s Ben Stiller silliness. The male model satire still has a handful of genuinely stupid-brilliant jokes, gasoline fight included. But so much of the humor leans on Derek Zoolander being dumb in ways that now read as mocking disability rather than vanity. The "center for kids who can't read good" gag hits different when you're not fifteen anymore. | © Paramount Pictures

Me Myself Irene

7. Me, Myself & Irene (2000)

Jim Carrey plays a cop with split personality disorder, and the movie treats mental illness like a punchline factory. Half the jokes lean on slurs and shock value that feel less edgy now and more exhausting. Renée Zellweger gets stuck as the prize in a plot that barely bothers with her as a person. The physical comedy still lands sometimes, but the script around it feels stuck in a much less careful era. | © 20th Century Fox
The Waterboy

6. The Waterboy (1998)

Bobby Boucher spends the entire runtime getting mocked for a speech impediment, and the movie treats every stutter as a punchline. Adam Sandler built a whole career on characters like this, but watching a grown man with a developmental disability get bullied by coaches and teammates plays a lot differently now than it did in 1998. The bayou stereotypes aimed at Bobby's mother do not help either, leaning hard into hillbilly caricature for cheap laughs. Underneath the football jokes sits a movie that mistakes cruelty for comedy way too often. | © Disney (Buena Vista Pictures)
The Nutty Professor

5. The Nutty Professor (1996)

Eddie Murphy playing an entire family of characters in fat suits was treated as a comedy highlight back in 1996. Buddy Love's whole personality runs on cruelty toward Sherman, and the film keeps framing his cutting remarks as the funny part. The fat jokes pile up scene after scene until they stop being jokes and just become the plot. What once looked like a showcase for Murphy's range now reads as a checklist of things comedy grew out of. | © Universal Pictures
Happy Gilmore

4. Happy Gilmore (1996)

Adam Sandler built Happy Gilmore around a hockey player with anger issues who swings a golf club like a weapon. The rage-fueled meltdowns and slapstick brawling played as harmless goofiness back then. Watching it now, the constant screaming and casual cruelty toward pretty much everyone feels exhausting instead of funny. The Bob Barker fight still lands, but a lot of the surrounding chaos just feels mean. | © Universal Pictures

Ace Ventura Pet Detective

3. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective turned Jim Carrey into a superstar overnight, but the reveal at the center of the plot has not held up at all. The joke hinges on panic and disgust over Lieutenant Einhorn's gender history, treated like the ultimate punchline instead of a character detail. Carrey's physical comedy still lands in bursts, all rubber limbs and talking through his butt cheeks. The stuff built around him just feels meaner than anyone remembers. | © Warner Bros.

Cropped dumb and dumber 1994

2. Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Lloyd and Harry built a whole friendship on being gloriously, aggressively stupid, and that premise still works fine on its own. The problem is everything stuffed around it, from the parade of disability gags to a script that treats women as punchlines waiting to happen. Jim Carrey's physical comedy still lands, since the guy could turn a toilet joke into an art form. Watching it now means bracing for a wince every few minutes between the laughs. | © New Line Cinema

Cropped American Pie

1. American Pie (1999)

American Pie made a pastry punchline into a cultural moment, but a lot of the humor around it has curdled badly. The whole plot hinges on guys treating sex like a scoreboard, and the movie barely blinks at how gross that framing is. Jokes about a foreign exchange student get uncomfortable fast when you watch them now instead of just remembering the highlight reel. What once felt like harmless horniness plays more like a manual for bad behavior in 2024. | © Universal Pictures
