In reality, Seal became a major drug smuggler before cooperating with the DEA after his arrest, while the film exaggerates his CIA relationship considerably. John Dillinger enters *Public Enemies* wearing Johnny Depp’s face, immaculate coats, and the exhausted cool of a man already preparing to become a legend. Michael Mann presents him as the last romantic outlaw in an era when crime is becoming bureaucratic, impersonal, and much harder to escape. His robberies, hostage-taking, and the violence committed by his gang remain visible, yet ordinary victims barely register beside his doomed romance. Dr. Dre’s assault on journalist Dee Barnes and allegations of abuse made by Michel’le were omitted, removing behavior that would have severely complicated his inspirational ascent. Since Dre and Ice Cube were producers, the polished perspective hardly feels accidental.
