Great Actors, Bad Leads: 12 Stars Who Proved They Can’t Carry a Movie

1-12

Kit Harington

12. Kit Harington

The abs certainly understood the assignment. Kit Harington’s gladiator in Pompeii looks ready for every sword fight, forbidden romance and promotional poster the production can throw at him. Unfortunately, physical commitment supplies only half a screen hero. His solemn delivery gives the love story little playfulness, while the revenge plot needs more personality beneath the clenched jaw. A familiar tragic backstory can establish our sympathies, but Harington struggles to turn those sympathies into much curiosity about the man himself. | © HBO

Jason Clarke

11. Jason Clarke

Jason Clarke makes terrible decisions look worryingly reasonable, a useful skill when playing a father who thinks an ancient burial ground might solve his problems. In Pet Sematary, his tightly controlled performance gives the grief some weight, but keeps the audience at a distance when the horror needs us emotionally cornered. He supplies credibility more readily than intimacy. The casting makes sense; the missing connection helps explain why this particular lead role feels less affecting than it should. | © Hulu

Jon Bernthal

10. Jon Bernthal

Put Jon Bernthal in a doorway and you immediately wonder who owes him money. Sweet Virginia makes clever use of that expectation, casting him as a former rodeo rider whose battered exterior conceals considerable gentleness. His quieter performance complicates the idea that he only works as a supporting bruiser: he can sustain attention without threatening anybody. What remains less established is his appeal as a mainstream theatrical headliner, which is a different question from whether he can act the part. | © Sony Pictures Releasing

Luke Evans

9. Luke Evans

Turning Dracula into a protective family man requires an actor who can sell tenderness and mass destruction in the same outfit. Luke Evans manages the earnestness in Dracula Untold, although the noble-warrior treatment leaves surprisingly little room for seduction, perversity or fun. His Vlad spends so much time justifying the monster that the monster rarely gets to enjoy himself. The film earned more than $200 million worldwide, so this was no outright commercial rejection; it was a rather restrictive star vehicle. | © Hulu

Dominic Cooper

8. Dominic Cooper

Two demanding roles, one actor, and remarkably little confusion about who is speaking: The Devil’s Double gives Dominic Cooper a proper showcase. Playing both Uday Hussein and his coerced impersonator, Latif Yahia, he separates monstrous entitlement from watchful fear without relying on elaborate physical transformations. The performance makes his uneven leading-man career especially frustrating. Cooper could command the frame; Hollywood simply never found a durable star identity for him. Talent was available in duplicate. A clear career trajectory was not. | © A-Film Distribution

Theo James

7. Theo James

Theo James spends The Monkey playing adult twins caught in a grotesque supernatural family disaster, hardly the safest assignment for someone supposedly short on screen presence. His dry delivery gives the absurd violence a human anchor, while the contrasting brothers offer room beyond his usual polished confidence. The film also earned several times its reported production budget worldwide. Stephen King’s name and the murderous toy helped sell tickets, certainly, but blaming the lead for failure gets awkward when the failure never happened. | © Lionsgate Films

Sam Claflin

6. Sam Claflin

Romantic chemistry is work, even when a handsome actor makes it look suspiciously easy. Sam Claflin’s contribution to Me Before You depends on timing: letting Will’s defensive sarcasm soften enough for Emilia Clarke’s Lou to reach him. That responsiveness helps the relationship function, though Clarke receives the more outwardly expressive role. Calling him a passenger would miss what he contributes. The better criticism is that this successful partnership reveals more about his strengths as a romantic co-lead than a commanding solo attraction. | © BBC

Ansel Elgort

5. Ansel Elgort

Behind the immaculate clothes and wounded expression, someone in The Goldfinch is presumably having a devastating inner life. Ansel Elgort makes that person frustratingly difficult to reach. As the adult Theo Decker, he conveys withdrawal without consistently revealing the conflicting impulses underneath it, leaving the drama emotionally remote. The adaptation’s cumbersome structure deserves plenty of blame, but a stronger sense of internal struggle might have helped. Here, the solemn presentation keeps asking us to feel depths the performance only intermittently reveals. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Charlie Hunnam

4. Charlie Hunnam

Guy Ritchie hands Charlie Hunnam a sword, a streetwise entourage and enough mythology to require its own filing cabinet. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is liveliest when Hunnam can bargain, bluff and behave like a hustler; the reluctant-messiah business makes him considerably less distinctive. His swagger suggests a scrappier, more entertaining film beneath the expensive spectacle. Once Arthur becomes a delivery system for supernatural combat, Hunnam has fewer opportunities to give the audience a person worth following through it. | © FX

Armie Hammer

3. Armie Hammer

A title role comes with certain expectations, including occasionally feeling like the main attraction. The Lone Ranger repeatedly turns Armie Hammer’s John Reid into the bewildered straight man beside Johnny Depp’s Tonto, postponing his authority while the film indulges its elaborate detours. Hammer can make the stiffness funny, but the character spends an exhausting stretch becoming someone worth cheering. That is partly a structural problem: the movie asks its lead to establish heroic charisma while repeatedly arranging for him to look foolish. | © Netflix

Liam Hemsworth

2. Liam Hemsworth

Being caught between Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford should make a young corporate climber sweat. In Paranoia, Liam Hemsworth too often looks like he is waiting for somebody to finish explaining the phone contract. His Adam Cassidy needs ambition, resentment and quick-thinking panic to make the espionage machinery convincing; the performance rarely gives those impulses much texture. The veteran co-stars can suggest competing agendas with a glance, leaving Hemsworth’s comparatively straightforward reactions exposed whenever the film returns to its supposed center. | © Lionsgate Films

Scott Eastwood

1. Scott Eastwood

Nicholas Sparks supplies the romance, the rodeo supplies the danger, and Scott Eastwood supplies a remarkably camera-friendly cowboy. What The Longest Ride needs beyond that is a distinctive personality for bull rider Luke Collins. Eastwood brings sincerity to the role, but his restrained delivery gives the central relationship less spark than its sweeping presentation promises. When the parallel love story draws our attention elsewhere, good looks cannot close the gap. He is convincing as the dream date; the complicated person takes longer to emerge. | © MUBI

Not every great actor is cut out to be a leading man or woman, and Hollywood has spent millions learning that lesson the hard way. Some of the industry's most talented performers have stolen scenes, earned prestigious awards, and built impressive careers, only to struggle when handed an entire movie to carry. Whether it was a disastrous box office gamble, a poorly chosen starring role, or a simple lack of leading-star charisma, these 12 actors discovered that being the best part of a movie isn't quite the same as being its biggest attraction.
