Great Actors, Bad Leads: 12 Stars Who Proved They Can’t Carry a Movie

1-12

Jason Clarke

12. Jason Clarke

Cast Jason Clarke as a stern military officer, exhausted father, government interrogator, or morally compromised authority figure, and the movie immediately feels more expensive. Ask him to become its main attraction, and things get shakier. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes belonged to Caesar, Terminator Genisys leaned heavily on Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Pet Sematary was marketed through Stephen King’s name. Clarke is an excellent stabilizer, keeping the bridge upright rather than providing the reason anyone bought a ticket to cross it. | © Hulu

Jon Bernthal

11. Jon Bernthal

On television, Jon Bernthal has proved that he can command hours of screen time with a glare, a growl, and the posture of someone expecting a bar fight. Cinema has treated him differently, usually deploying him as the dangerous supporting player who arrives, electrifies three scenes, and leaves before the audience gets accustomed to him. Even The Accountant 2 paired him with Ben Affleck rather than testing him alone. Bernthal’s ferocity works best in concentrated doses; stretched across an ordinary action movie, the effect can become surprisingly one-note. | © Sony Pictures Releasing

Kit Harington

10. Kit Harington

Jon Snow gave Kit Harington a heroic silhouette, a devoted fan base, and perhaps unrealistic expectations about his movie-star potential. Pompeii placed him front and center, covered him in gladiator dust, and still found its erupting volcano more charismatic. Later projects wisely shifted him toward ensembles, smaller dramas, and television, while Eternals used him mostly as a promise for a future story that never became the film’s priority. Harington looks convincing on a poster, but his restrained style often needs a larger cast creating sparks around him. | © HBO

Dominic Cooper

9. Dominic Cooper

Hollywood has never quite decided what Dominic Cooper should be. He has played charming rogues, anxious lovers, comic-book villains, reckless billionaires, and an especially memorable young version of Howard Stark, yet a signature film career never materialized. Cooper was excellent carrying the television series Preacher, but cinema usually places him beside louder personalities in movies such as Mamma Mia!, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Dracula Untold. His versatility keeps him employed, but it has also prevented audiences from developing one compelling reason to follow him into theaters. | © A-Film Distribution

Luke Evans

8. Luke Evans

A sharp jawline, a booming voice, and the ability to wear period costumes without looking embarrassed once made Luke Evans seem engineered in a British movie-star laboratory. His supporting turns as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast and Owen Shaw in the Fast & Furious franchise remain more memorable than most of his leading work. Dracula Untold performed respectably but failed to launch the grand monster universe being teased around it, while his smaller starring films largely vanished. Evans has all the ingredients of a leading man, but he lacks the distinct magnetism required to carry a blockbuster. | © Hulu

Sam Claflin

7. Sam Claflin

Romance has been unusually kind to Sam Claflin, although it generally pairs him with an actress who becomes the emotional engine of the film. Emilia Clarke powered much of Me Before You, Lily Collins supplied the charm in Love, Rosie, and Shailene Woodley carried the survival drama surrounding Adrift. Claflin is handsome, likable, and capable of darker work, particularly when playing against his polished appearance. Still, he tends to complement a movie rather than define it, which is a useful quality, but not quite the same thing as commanding the screen. | © BBC

Theo James

6. Theo James

Theo James keeps getting close enough to movie stardom to make the industry reconsider the question every few years. The Divergent films made him recognizable, though Shailene Woodley remained their dramatic center, while The White Lotus and The Gentlemen confirmed that television suits his controlled charisma beautifully. The Monkey gave him a successful theatrical lead in two roles, but Stephen King, horror audiences, and a gleefully ridiculous premise were also doing plenty of lifting. James can anchor a project; whether his name alone can turn one into an event remains doubtful. | © Lionsgate Films

Charlie Hunnam

5. Charlie Hunnam

Television made Charlie Hunnam look like an obvious action star, largely because Sons of Anarchy allowed him years to build Jax Teller’s swagger, rage, and vulnerability. Movies offered far less breathing room. Pacific Rim surrounded him with giant robots, The Lost City of Z earned admiration without becoming a commercial breakthrough, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword collapsed under the weight of its franchise ambitions. Hunnam has presence and physical credibility, but his understated delivery can disappear when a blockbuster starts throwing digital armies across the screen. | © FX

Ansel Elgort

4. Ansel Elgort

Ansel Elgort once appeared to have solved the leading-man equation. The Fault in Our Stars became a phenomenon, and Baby Driver was a stylish commercial hit with Elgort sitting squarely behind the wheel. Yet both movies also came with powerful machinery: bestselling material in one case, Edgar Wright’s direction and a scene-stealing ensemble in the other. The Goldfinch exposed how little energy Elgort can generate inside sluggish material, while West Side Story frequently came alive whenever the camera moved away from him. A star should rescue momentum, not merely receive it. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Liam Hemsworth

3. Liam Hemsworth

The Hunger Games made Liam Hemsworth famous while requiring surprisingly little of him beyond looking concerned whenever Katniss returned from another traumatic event. Attempts to convert that visibility into a solo film career produced thrillers such as Paranoia, Killerman, and Arkansas, none of which established him as a dependable attraction. Even Independence Day: Resurgence surrounded him with returning characters, alien destruction, and decades of nostalgia, yet still lacked a charismatic center. Hemsworth fits comfortably into an ensemble; alone, his calm screen presence often drifts into anonymity. | © Lionsgate Films

Armie Hammer

2. Armie Hammer

Studios kept handing Armie Hammer leading roles as if persistence might eventually transform him into the movie star his appearance advertised. The Lone Ranger paired him with Johnny Depp and an enormous budget, only for Hammer to become one of the least memorable elements in his own origin story. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. later developed a loyal following, but Henry Cavill’s charm and Guy Ritchie’s style did much of the selling. Hammer delivered stronger work in character-driven ensembles, where his polished stiffness could become part of the role rather than an obstacle to it. | © Netflix

Scott Eastwood

1. Scott Eastwood

The resemblance to Clint Eastwood has opened plenty of doors for Scott Eastwood, but it has also invited a comparison that almost no actor would enjoy. Leading roles in The Longest Ride, Overdrive, and several generic action thrillers revealed a performer with the look of an old-fashioned movie star but little of the unpredictability that made his father compelling. Larger productions such as Suicide Squad, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and the Fast & Furious films sensibly kept him inside ensembles. A famous squint can secure the close-up; holding our attention afterward is the harder inheritance. | © MUBI

1-12

Being famous enough to dominate a poster does not always mean an actor can hold an entire film together. Some Hollywood stars thrive in ensemble casts, supporting roles, or carefully chosen franchises, only to struggle when the whole production rests on their shoulders. Box office disappointments, flat leading performances, and repeated failed star vehicles have exposed the difference between a recognizable face and a genuine movie star. Sad.
