Finn began the sequel trilogy as a stormtrooper who rejected fascism, which made his reduced role here especially frustrating. *The Rise of Skywalker* promotes him to general, then mostly has him chase Rey, shout her name, and postpone a confession the film never reveals. He still leads Jannah’s assault and senses which Sith Star Destroyer is guiding the fleet, so “useless” is not technically fair. *The Departed* already has two men living double lives, so Madolyn is assigned the unenviable task of dating one, treating the other, and becoming a human bridge between their secrets. Her discovery of Costigan’s recording helps expose Colin, but the screenplay often treats her as emotional evidence rather than an active player. Vera Farmiga gives Madolyn enough intelligence and unease to suggest a richer story. Dick Hallorann explains the “shining,” recognizes Danny’s psychic distress from hundreds of miles away, and crosses the country through a snowstorm to help him. Stanley Kubrick rewards that heroic effort by having Jack kill him almost immediately after he enters the hotel. Hallorann still matters: his warning defines the supernatural rules, and the Snowcat he brings becomes Wendy and Danny’s escape vehicle. Rachel Dawes has a career, principles, and the rare ability to tell Bruce Wayne when he is behaving like an entitled billionaire, yet both films keep narrowing her into a moral measuring stick for men. She helps fight Gotham’s corruption and refuses to wait indefinitely for Bruce, but her biggest narrative function is becoming the loss that transforms Harvey Dent. Rachel is not powerless; she is underwritten with impressive efficiency. Cropped The Joker Suicide Squad 2016 — 11. The Joker — Suicide Squad (2016)

*Suicide Squad*’s advertising treated Jared Leto’s Joker like the main attraction, while the finished film uses him as a brightly colored detour. He tortures Harleen Quinzel in flashbacks, spends the present chasing Harley, stages a helicopter rescue, disappears, and returns for a final prison break. None of that meaningfully changes the squad’s battle against Enchantress. Remove him, condense Harley’s origin, and the central mission survives almost untouched—which is a remarkable fate for a villain promoted as though Gotham itself had joined the cast. | © Warner Bros. A mutant who can summon lightning, hurricanes, and tornadoes should be the answer to nearly every battlefield problem, but the original *X-Men* trilogy repeatedly parks Storm behind Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Cyclops. She gets memorable demonstrations of power—blasting Toad, protecting the X-Jet, and fighting Callisto—without receiving an equally memorable personal arc. Halle Berry brings authority whenever the script remembers her, yet Ororo Munroe rarely gets to lead the story she could easily dominate. As an escape partner, Fabienne is a small disaster. She forgets Butch’s treasured gold watch, forcing him back into the apartment where Vincent Vega is waiting, and spends much of her limited screen time discussing breakfast, potbellies, and what counts as a motorcycle. Structurally, however, her mistake detonates one of *Pulp Fiction*’s most important chains of events, eventually sending Butch into the pawnshop nightmare with Marsellus Wallace. Fabienne may contribute almost nothing intentionally, but accidental plot engineering still counts. Even her uselessness is suspiciously productive. | © Miramax Films

Titus Telesco arrives at the Bahamian resort looking like Jack Black lost a bet involving dreadlocks, a pool uniform, and an aggressively relaxed accent. The uncredited character tends to his marijuana plant, flirts, offers no useful warning, discovers no clues, and never becomes part of the stranded group’s survival plan. He then wanders into the generator room and is murdered with gardening shears. Titus exists almost entirely to add a bizarre comic interlude and another body to the slasher’s total, accomplishing both with admirable speed. | © Mandalay Entertainment

*Any Given Sunday* packs its locker room with aging legends, ambitious newcomers, corrupt doctors, feuding coaches, and players treating contract bonuses like life support. Jimmy Sanderson, meanwhile, becomes Willie Beamen’s favored wide receiver and helps deepen the resentment surrounding the quarterback’s sudden rise. That is roughly where his development stops. Bill Bellamy gives Jimmy plenty of swagger, but the film never turns him into more than a useful target on the field and an accessory to Willie’s ego off it. Dr. Loomis tells Sheriff Leigh Brackett that death has arrived in Haddonfield, and Brackett responds as though the psychiatrist is overselling a neighborhood disturbance. He accompanies Loomis to the Myers house and participates in the search, but never mobilizes the town before Michael murders three teenagers, including Brackett’s own daughter. *Halloween* benefits from adults who remain several steps behind its silent killer, so his ineffectiveness serves the tension beautifully. Willie Scott spends much of *Temple of Doom* screaming at insects, complaining about the accommodations, and being physically transported through danger by Indiana Jones or Short Round. The joke is deliberate—she is a pampered nightclub singer trapped in the least suitable adventure imaginable—but the routine can make her feel like extra luggage with excellent costumes. To be fair, Willie saves Indy and Short Round from the crushing spike chamber by reaching through a wall of bugs. Fabrizio boards the Titanic beside Jack with dreams of reaching America, celebrates every new experience at maximum volume, and then gradually vanishes behind the central romance. He gives Jack a believable life before Rose and helps represent the thousands of third-class immigrants whose hopes were carried aboard the ship. Once disaster strikes, however, the screenplay offers him little agency before a collapsing funnel kills him. Calling Olaf useless requires ignoring the moment he finds Anna locked away, starts a fire to keep her alive, and helps her understand that Kristoff loves her. That is an inconvenient amount of usefulness for a snowman built primarily to sell jokes, songs, and mountains of merchandise. Still, *Frozen* could trim several detachable-body gags and most of his summer obsession without disturbing the sisters’ emotional story. Jar Jar Binks is not useless in the strictest plot sense. He guides the Jedi to Otoh Gunga, helps connect Queen Amidala with the Gungan army, and blunders his way through the climactic battle with improbable success. The problem is that every useful action arrives wrapped in pratfalls, vocal tics, and comic business that frequently hijacks the scene around him. George Lucas needed a bridge between Naboo’s two societies; he created one that audiences wanted to throw into the swamp. Alfrid Lickspittle begins as the Master of Lake-town’s oily deputy, a cowardly bureaucrat whose groveling helps illustrate how badly the town is governed. That point is established quickly. The films then keep him around to dodge responsibility, insult survivors, chase treasure, and interrupt a massive war with comedy that rarely lands. Because Alfrid was created for the adaptation, removing him would bring the story closer to Tolkien while also shortening an already overextended trilogy.
