15 Star Wars Plot Holes Fans Still Can't Explain

1-15

These don't make any sense...

Leia Star Wars

15. Leia Remembers Her Real Mother

In Return of the Jedi, Leia tells Luke that she remembers her mother as being beautiful, kind, and sad, but Revenge of the Sith clearly shows that Padmé dies immediately after giving birth to the twins. Unless Leia has memories from moments before she was born, her recollection doesn't quite fit the narrative established by the prequel trilogy. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Twentieth Century-Fox

Obi Wan Yoda Star Wars

14. Obi-Wan Kenobi Claims to Have Been Trained by Master Yoda

In A New Hope, Obi-Wan tells Luke that he was trained by Yoda. However, the prequel trilogy establishes that Obi-Wan's primary Jedi Master was Qui-Gon Jinn, while Yoda primarily trained the younglings at the Jedi Temple. So, while it's technically true that Yoda was one of the Jedi who instructed him, it's a bit misleading compared to what actually happened. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./20th Century Fox

Knights of Ren Star Wars

13. The Knights of Ren Barely Matter

The Knights of Ren are introduced as a mysterious group of elite masked warriors in The Force Awakens. However, they disappear from the story for most of the trilogy before returning in The Rise of Skywalker, where their importance remains surprisingly limited. | © Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Darth Maul Star Wars

12. The Jedi Never Discover the Sith Rule of Two

The Jedi know that Darth Maul exists and eventually learn that a Sith Lord is operating behind the scenes. Yet their investigation into the Sith conspiracy somehow fails to uncover the significance of the Rule of Two until much later. For those unfamiliar, the Rule of Two is a Sith decree that establishes that only two Sith Lords can exist at any given time: one to represent the dark side of the Force, and an apprentice who learns from them. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./20th Century Fox

R2 D2 Star Wars

11. R2-D2 Doesn't Recognize Yoda

R2-D2 spends considerable time with Yoda during the Clone Wars and the events of Revenge of the Sith. Yet when Luke brings him to Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back, there is no obvious indication that R2 remembers his old Jedi companion. Some fan theories claim R2-D2 likely recognized Yoda but chose to play along with Yoda's test of Luke. That could explain an otherwise unexplainable plot hole. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Twentieth Century-Fox

Leia The Last Jedi

10. Leia's Force Sensitivity Seemingly Comes Out of Nowhere

Leia is revealed to have significant Force potential, specifically in The Last Jedi. While the idea fits with her Skywalker heritage, the original trilogy barely establishes her abilities beyond a few mysterious moments. It's believed that she was never formally trained in the ways of the Force, and, as royalty, she was taught to have tight control over her emotions. Altogether, this would have prevented not only her but anyone else from sensing her abilities. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The First Order Star Wars

9. The First Order Somehow Becomes So Powerful

The First Order appears to emerge from the remnants of the Empire and quickly becomes a massive military force in the sequel trilogy. The movies provide relatively little detail about how it acquired the resources necessary to build its fleets, armies, and superweapons on such a huge scale. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Starkiller Base Star Wars

8. Starkiller Base Makes The Same Mistake As Past Death Stars

Starkiller Base is essentially a planet-sized superweapon capable of destroying multiple worlds from enormous distances. Yet it has a rather straightforward vulnerability that allows the Resistance to bring it down in The Force Awakens, which feels like a cheap repetition of the problems associated with previous Death Stars. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Rey Jedi Star Wars

7. Rey Becomes a Powerful Jedi with Limited Training

Rey becomes remarkably powerful with the Force despite receiving very little formal Jedi training. She spends a surprisingly short amount of time learning from Luke in The Last Jedi before continuing to develop her abilities largely on her own. By The Rise of Skywalker, she's capable of using advanced Force abilities and defeating Palpatine. | © Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Obi Wan C3 PO Star Wars

6. Obi-Wan Seemingly Doesn't Remember C-3PO and R2-D2

Obi-Wan claims in A New Hope that he doesn't remember ever owning a droid. That's strange considering how closely he worked with R2-D2 and C-3PO throughout the prequel trilogy. Obi-Wan spent years traveling with Anakin and repeatedly encountered the droids, yet appears completely unaware of them when they meet again decades later. Many believe his line from A New Hope, "I don't seem to remember ever owning a droid", is not necessarily a lie, as the droids never belonged to Obi-Wan. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Twentieth Century-Fox

C3 PO Star Wars

5. C-3PO's Memory Is Wiped, But R2-D2's Isn't

At the end of Revenge of the Sith, Bail Organa ordered C-3PO's memory to be erased in order to prevent him from remembering the Skywalkers. R2-D2's memory, however, remains intact despite having witnessed many of the same events. The movies never provide a reasonable explanation for why one droid gets the memory wipe while the other doesn't. Some believe this was due to C-3PO's rather shaky history of keeping information to himself. Meanwhile, R2-D2 is seen as a more reliable robot when it comes to secrecy. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Twentieth Century-Fox

Galen Erso Star Wars

4. The Empire Should Have Been More Suspicious of Galen Erso

Galen Erso is one of the Empire's most important scientists and plays a crucial role in developing the Death Star. However, Rogue One reveals that he secretly embeds a major weakness into the station's design. Considering the Empire's paranoia and the enormous importance of the Death Star, it seems strange that nobody became suspicious of Galen's activities or closely reviewed his work before the station was completed. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Maz Kanata Star Wars

3. How Did Maz Kanata Get Luke's Lightsaber?

Now this is a bit of a headscratcher. The Force Awakens treats Luke's old blue lightsaber as a major mystery. Yet Maz Kanata dismisses questions about how she obtained it and simply says that it's a story for another time. No information was provided in the later movies. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Leia Hugs Rey Star Wars

2. Leia Hugs Rey Instead of Chewbacca

Leia chose to grieve Han Solo's death in The Force Awakens by hugging Rey instead of Chewbacca — something many fans thought was a slight at the Wookiee. It would make more sense for Leia to seek comfort with someone she knows rather than someone she had just met. Director J. J. Abrams later acknowledged that it was a "mistake" for Leia to overlook Chewbacca. | © Lucasfilm Ltd./Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Emperor Palpatine Star Wars

1. The Emperor's Return

The Rise of Skywalker reveals that Emperor Palpatine survived his apparent death in Return of the Jedi. The explanation involving cloning, Sith secrets, and a mysterious body raises more questions than it answers, especially because the original trilogy treated his death as definitive. | © Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The Star Wars movies are filled with a bunch of unforgettable characters, battles, and some of the most iconic moments in movie history. However, even this beloved franchise isn't completely free of inconsistencies. Across the movies and TV shows, there are plenty of details that don't quite add up.
