The 15 Worst Movies Based On TV Shows

1-15

Ignacio Weil Ignacio Weil
Entertainment - July 23rd 2026, 15:30 GMT+2
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas 2000

15. The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000)

A prequel explaining how Fred and Barney met Wilma and Betty was not exactly the missing chapter audiences had spent six years demanding. Mark Addy and Stephen Baldwin inherit roles previously played by John Goodman and Rick Moranis, but their friendship never develops the easy sitcom rhythm that Bedrock needs. The production design remains impressively committed to prehistoric puns, while Alan Cumming works overtime as both the Great Gazoo and Mick Jagged. Unfortunately, the noisy romance surrounding Rock Vegas feels more synthetic than the sets. | © Universal Pictures

Inspector Gadget 1999 cropped processed by imagy

14. Inspector Gadget (1999)

The cartoon’s central joke was beautifully simple: Inspector Gadget believed he was a brilliant detective while Penny and Brain secretly did all the work. Disney’s live-action version turns him into a more conventional superhero, gives Dr. Claw an origin story, and even shows the villain’s face, removing several ingredients that made the series memorable. Matthew Broderick brings his usual likability, but the frantic editing, aggressive slapstick, and talking Gadgetmobile leave the film feeling like a toy commercial that accidentally reached feature length. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Land of the Lost 2009

13. Land of the Lost (2009)

Giving Will Ferrell access to dinosaurs, Sleestaks, time portals, and an unusually confident primate sounds like the foundation of inspired nonsense. Instead, this adaptation takes a strange but sincere family adventure series and rebuilds it as a raunchy comedy that cannot decide whether children, nostalgic adults, or stoned college students are the intended audience. Ferrell and Danny McBride occasionally locate the absurd movie hiding underneath the expensive effects, yet the crude jokes and wandering plot repeatedly drag them back into the prehistoric swamp. | © Universal Pictures

The Honeymooners 2005 cropped processed by imagy

12. The Honeymooners (2005)

Updating The Honeymooners with Cedric the Entertainer, Mike Epps, Gabrielle Union, and Regina Hall was not the problem; that cast could have given the material a lively modern pulse. The trouble is that Ralph Kramden’s explosive ambition and Alice’s ability to puncture it have been softened into a generic story about lovable underdogs chasing a better life. Without the original show’s claustrophobic apartment, sharp marital tension, and working-class frustration, the characters become pleasant strangers wearing famous names. Even the schemes feel suspiciously well adjusted. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped a night at the roxbury

11. A Night at the Roxbury (1998)

Haddaway’s “What Is Love” can carry a nightclub scene, a wedding reception, and apparently an entire cultural era, but asking it to support a feature film was ambitious. Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan remain amusingly committed as the head-bobbing Butabi brothers, whose dream of opening their own club provides the recurring sketch with something resembling a plot. Cult affection has been generous to this comedy, particularly its soundtrack and endlessly quoted lines, although the thin premise still begins gasping well before the brothers reach the velvet rope. | © SNL Studios

Mr Magoo 1997 cropped processed by imagy

10. Mr. Magoo (1997)

Leslie Nielsen should have been ideal casting for a character who wanders through danger while remaining cheerfully unaware of it. Unfortunately, Mr. Magoo surrounds him with a cluttered jewel-heist plot, frantic action, and jokes about visual impairment that were criticized even when the film was released. The result lacks Nielsen’s best deadpan timing because every gag is underlined, repeated, and then chased down a mountain. A comedy built around someone who cannot see what is happening somehow became equally confused about its own target audience. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Blumhouses fantasy island msn

9. Blumhouse's Fantasy Island (2020)

The elevator pitch—turn the wish-fulfillment television series into a horror movie—has enough twisted potential to justify itself immediately. Michael Peña makes an intriguing Mr. Roarke, and the island’s habit of granting fantasies with unpleasant consequences naturally suits Blumhouse. Then the screenplay begins stacking revenge plots, secret connections, supernatural explanations, and increasingly desperate twists until the original concept disappears beneath the luggage. Rather than exploring why people desire dangerous things, Fantasy Island spends most of its runtime explaining a mythology that becomes less convincing with every revelation. | © Blumhouse Productions

The Avengers 1998 cropped processed by imagy

8. The Avengers (1998)

No, Captain America does not appear; this is the adaptation of the stylish British spy series starring John Steed and Emma Peel. Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman look immaculate, Sean Connery controls the weather, and a secret meeting conducted in giant teddy-bear costumes confirms that somebody understood the assignment visually. Almost everything between those images, however, lands with a thud. The dry wit feels embalmed, the story appears to be missing several connective scenes, and the carefully manufactured eccentricity makes British charm resemble an expensive theme-park attraction. | © Warner Bros.

Baywatch 2017 cropped processed by imagy

7. Baywatch (2017)

Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron possess enough competitive chemistry to keep this R-rated reboot afloat longer than its screenplay deserves. Making fun of the television show’s slow-motion glamour was an obvious approach, but Baywatch keeps congratulating itself for noticing the joke while sending its lifeguards into an overextended drug-smuggling investigation. Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, and Jon Bass receive scraps compared with the two male leads, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas is stranded with a generic villain. The beach is crowded, the bodies are sculpted, and the laughs require emergency assistance. | © Paramount Pictures

Sex and the City 2 2010 cropped processed by imagy

6. Sex and the City 2 (2010)

Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha once navigated dating, careers, friendship, and the occasional catastrophic shoe purchase with acidic humor. Their second movie sends them on an extravagant trip to Abu Dhabi, where personal dilemmas are repeatedly drowned in luxury suites, costume changes, and cultural observations that range from clumsy to painful. At nearly two and a half hours, the vacation feels less like escapism than being trapped inside an airport perfume advertisement. Even the return of Aidan cannot disguise how far the characters have wandered from their New York City spark. | © HBO Films

Car 54 Where Are You 1994 cropped processed by imagy

5. Car 54, Where Are You (1994)

Shot several years before its eventual release, Car 54, Where Are You? already felt like a misplaced artifact when it finally reached theaters. David Johansen and John C. McGinley take over as officers Toody and Muldoon, now assigned to protect a mob witness in a plot far busier than the modest television comedy ever required. Cameos from original cast members Al Lewis and Nipsey Russell provide brief flickers of authenticity, but the broad performances and strained jokes suggest a police siren that has been left running after everyone went home. | © Orion Pictures

Knights of the Zodiac 2023 cropped processed by imagy

4. Knights of the Zodiac (2023)

Saint Seiya offers celestial armor, Greek mythology, operatic rivalries, and heroes capable of punching with the force of exploding constellations. Its live-action adaptation responds by packaging Seiya’s story as a familiar young-adult origin adventure, complete with generic wisecracks, secret organizations, and franchise setup that never earns the promised franchise. Mackenyu handles the physical demands impressively, while Sean Bean lends the exposition more dignity than expected. Yet the cosmic scale remains mostly theoretical, leaving fans with a Knights of the Zodiac movie surprisingly short on actual Zodiac Knights. | © Toei Animation

Jem and The Holograms 2015 cropped processed by imagy

3. Jem and The Holograms (2015)

The animated Jem featured holographic disguises, corporate warfare, outrageous costumes, rival bands, and enough neon melodrama to power several shopping malls. The movie discards most of that in favor of a grounded social-media success story about a shy singer whose homemade video goes viral. Its young cast is appealing and several songs work perfectly well, but virtually none of it feels specific to Jem. Turning the supercomputer Synergy into a cute scavenger-hunt robot was the final warning: this adaptation wanted the recognizable name, not the gloriously ridiculous world attached to it. | © Blumhouse Productions

The Last Airbender 2010 cropped processed by imagy

2. The Last Airbender (2010)

Compressing an entire season of Avatar: The Last Airbender into one film required ruthless storytelling discipline; instead, the characters spend much of the runtime explaining events that should be moving or exciting. The humor, warmth, and carefully developed friendships of the animated series are replaced by solemn exposition and performances so restrained that even elemental combat feels like administrative work. Dev Patel brings welcome intensity to Zuko, but altered pronunciations, controversial casting choices, awkward action, and a muddy 3D conversion turned a beloved fantasy saga into a joyless summary of itself. | © Nickelodeon Movies

Dragon Ball Evolution 2009 cropped processed by imagy

1. Dragon Ball Evolution (2009)

Turning Goku into an unpopular American high-school student was the first clue that Dragonball Evolution had misplaced more than the Dragon Balls. Akira Toriyama’s blend of martial arts, adventure, comedy, and escalating lunacy is reduced to a rushed collection of teenage drama, underpowered fights, and names borrowed from characters who barely resemble their originals. Chow Yun-fat supplies some welcome mischief as Master Roshi, but even he cannot rescue a Kamehameha that feels smaller than an average television commercial. The screenwriter later apologized; fans had already started processing the trauma. | © 20th Century Fox

1-15

Turning a hit TV series into a movie sounds like an easy win: familiar characters, a built-in audience, and years of material ready to borrow from. Yet some adaptations somehow lose everything that made the original show work, replacing charm, timing, and personality with bloated plots and expensive noise. These are the worst movies based on TV shows, from misguided reboots to big-screen disasters that fans would rather forget.
