Jamie Lee Curtis commits so completely to teenage chaos that it’s easy to overlook what her character does in Lindsay Lohan’s body. Tess kisses Jake, her daughter’s crush, while trying to redirect his attention away from Anna, who currently looks like Mom. He has no idea he’s kissing an adult impersonating her own child. Apparently, learning to respect your daughter’s choices includes briefly commandeering her love life. That apology deserves considerably more than a fortune cookie. | © Walt Disney Pictures

The Hot Chick 2002 — 2. The Hot Chick (2002) — A teenager’s body becomes an adult criminal’s payday

Jessica’s punishment for being a mean girl escalates well beyond an embarrassing haircut. After switching bodies with Clive, a grown criminal played by Rob Schneider, she discovers he’s using her appearance to work as a pole dancer and fleece men. Rachel McAdams plays the stolen-body half of this arrangement, which makes the exploitation especially plain: Jessica cannot control what happens to her own body. The movie nevertheless keeps its biggest emotional investment in whether she becomes a better friend. | © Touchstone Pictures

The Secret 2007 1 — 3. The Secret (2007) — His wife returns inside their daughter’s body

David Duchovny’s character gets his wife back after a fatal accident, with a condition no marriage counselor could reasonably prepare for: she now inhabits their teenage daughter. Their attempts to preserve the marriage bring sexual longing into a relationship that physically resembles father and child. Unlike the comedies here, this drama recognizes the discomfort. Even so, watching the adults negotiate their desires raises an uglier question: how much say does the absent daughter get over the body they’re discussing? | © EuropaCorp

Family Switch 2023 — 4. Family Switch (2023) — Brother and sister have to play husband and wife

For a family film, *Family Switch* takes an awfully enthusiastic detour into sibling kissing. Trapped in their parents’ bodies, teenage brother and sister Wyatt and CC face suspicious friends who insist the apparently married couple demonstrate some affection. They reluctantly kiss, and their disgust supplies the joke. Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms handle the physical comedy, but the characters underneath remain siblings. Maintaining a convincing cover story suddenly seems much less important than announcing a divorce and leaving the party. | © Grey Matter Productions

Big 1988 — 5. Big (1988) — An adult romance has a child at its center

The giant piano gets remembered. The sexual relationship deserves another look. Josh’s wish gives him an adult body without the years of experience that normally accompany it, yet *Big* pairs him with Susan, a grown colleague who believes she’s dating another adult. Her ignorance matters; she isn’t knowingly pursuing a child. The audience, however, knows exactly who is underneath Tom Hanks’ oversized suit. His innocence fuels both the comedy and the romance, making those two pleasures increasingly difficult to separate. | © 20th Century Fox

The Change Up 2011 — 6. The Change-Up (2011) — Someone else’s marriage comes with the borrowed body

Jamie believes she’s undressing around her husband. Unfortunately, his best friend is currently behind the eyes. That invasion of privacy gives *The Change-Up* a nastier edge than its usual parade of bodily-fluid jokes: familiarity becomes permission that nobody actually granted. Meanwhile, Dave uses Mitch’s identity to pursue his attraction to colleague Sabrina. The men get opportunities to reassess their lives, while the women must navigate relationships without reliable information about whom they’re sharing intimate moments with. 17 Again 2009 — 7. 17 Again (2009) — His daughter develops a crush on him

Looking like Zac Efron solves several problems for middle-aged Mike and creates one spectacularly uncomfortable new one: his teenage daughter finds him attractive. She doesn’t recognize her magically rejuvenated father, so his protective attention reads very differently to her. Mike doesn’t reciprocate, and the film deliberately plays his predicament for embarrassment. Still, a story about reconnecting with your children takes a peculiar route when Dad’s disguise turns him into a romantic prospect at their school. Your Name 2016 — 8. Your Name (2016) — Borrowing her body apparently includes touching it

Mitsuha and Taki’s connection carries an extraordinary romance, which makes the recurring breast-touching gag feel especially cheap. Whenever Taki wakes in Mitsuha’s body, his curiosity repeatedly overrides her privacy. The joke depends on treating access as an irresistible invitation, even though the person whose body he’s exploring has her own wishes and boundaries. You can adore Makoto Shinkai’s gorgeous animation and still wish this particular routine had stayed out of the screenplay. Jenna gets the wardrobe, apartment, and career without the seventeen years that would help her understand any of them. Jennifer Garner makes that bewilderment charming, but it also complicates the romance with grown-up childhood friend Matt. He has lived into adulthood; she’s experiencing it with the consciousness of her thirteen-year-old self. The film invites us to celebrate the youthful sincerity that makes her lovable while largely sidestepping the vulnerability attached to it. An eleven-year-old getting through his father’s workday is an excellent setup for chaos. Sending him on Dad’s date adds a problem that competent spreadsheet management cannot fix. While Charlie occupies Marshall’s body, Marshall’s girlfriend Sam enjoys his unexpectedly playful company and kisses him, unaware she’s actually with a child. The real Marshall interrupts after witnessing the situation. Beneath the mistaken-identity comedy sits a boy navigating adult intimacy and a woman denied the basic information that would let her choose her company. | © Columbia Pictures
