Quentin Tarantino kept the footage, although one popular detail needs correcting: the blood later smeared across Kerry Washington’s face was fake and filmed after the injury had been treated. Ellen Burstyn repeatedly warned that the wire yanking her backward was pulling too hard, but director William Friedkin wanted the fall to look more violent. She eventually landed directly on her tailbone, suffering an injury that left her with lasting back problems. The cry heard as Chris MacNeil hits the floor is Burstyn reacting to genuine pain, not Regan’s demonic strength. Rain-slick pavement, high heels and a real car window formed a predictably unfriendly combination for Daryl Hannah. While filming Pris’s first encounter with J.F. Sebastian, she slipped and drove her elbow through the glass, reportedly chipping the bone in several places. Hannah continued the scene as though the collision were planned, which explains why Sebastian barely reacts to his newly ventilated vehicle. The Ludovico Technique did not rely on a harmless movie prop: those metal clamps were genuine surgical instruments holding Malcolm McDowell’s eyelids apart. His eyes had been anesthetized, preventing him from realizing that the restraints were scratching his corneas while Stanley Kubrick filmed the sequence. Once the medication wore off, McDowell described the pain as unbearable and required medical treatment. The finished sequence in *Apocalypse Now* feels invasive because it essentially captures a real personal crisis disguised as Captain Willard’s breakdown. Carrying a wooden cross weighing more than 100 pounds proved every bit as punishing as it appears in *The Passion of the Christ*. During one fall, the structure landed heavily on Jim Caviezel, separating his shoulder and causing him to bite his tongue. The blood visible around his mouth was his own, and he continued performing through the pain as the camera rolled. Lou Bloom rarely loses control, which makes his furious confrontation with a bathroom mirror especially startling. Jake Gyllenhaal became so immersed in the scene that he struck the glass hard enough to shatter it, slicing his hand and requiring numerous stitches at the hospital. He completed the take before seeking treatment, allowing *Nightcrawler* to retain both the accident and his momentary glance toward the wound. Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci trained extensively to make the fights in *Raging Bull* resemble bruising family confrontations instead of polished choreography. Their commitment became painfully literal when De Niro struck Pesci hard enough to break one of his ribs during a sparring sequence. Pesci’s collapse and reaction were preserved in the movie, giving Joey LaMotta a convincing reason to stay down. A missed prop swap turned Frank Castle’s apartment battle with the Russian into something much more dangerous than planned. Thomas Jane was handed a sharpened butterfly knife and stabbed Kevin Nash with it, believing he was using the safe version prepared for the scene. Nash barely reacted and continued fighting, initially unaware that the blade had penetrated his skin. Sean Bean Patriot Games 1992 — 13. Sean Bean Is Slashed With a Boat Hook — Patriot Games (1992)

Rain made the boat used for *Patriot Games*’ final confrontation dangerously slippery, something Harrison Ford discovered while swinging a metal hook at Sean Bean. Ford lost control and caught his co-star above the eye, opening a wound that required stitches and left Bean with a permanent scar. The accident added authentic blood to an already frantic fight, while the scar later became one of the actor’s defining features. Once he jumped, the overheated decorative lights burned his hands while the brutal landing injured his back and dislocated his pelvis. *Police Story* shows the stunt from multiple angles because one look at such lunacy apparently was not enough. Silent comedy came without digital effects, modern stunt coordinators or much apparent concern for Buster Keaton’s continued survival. A torrent released from a railroad water tower knocked him onto the tracks, slamming his head against a steel rail as the camera captured the impact. Keaton got up and completed the scene, assuming he had merely hurt himself.
