15 “Choices Matter” Games Where Your Choices Actually Don’t Matter

1-15

Telltales Game of Thrones

15. Telltale's Game of Thrones (2014)

House Forrester appears doomed from the moment its members wander into the political meat grinder of Westeros. Players can appoint different advisers, negotiate with rival houses and decide which characters live slightly longer, but the family’s collapse remains largely unavoidable. Even the dramatic choice between Rodrik and Asher merely changes who inherits the same miserable set of problems. The details move around; the knife aimed at your back never does. | © Telltale Games

Cropped Batman Arkham city

14. Arkham City Catwoman DLC (2011)

Near the end of Catwoman’s story in Batman: Arkham City, players receive an unusually selfish option: take the loot, abandon Batman and leave Gotham behind. Choose it and the credits begin rolling while distressing reports suggest that everything has gone catastrophically wrong. Then the game rewinds and makes you select the heroic option before the story can continue. Apparently, free will exists in Arkham City—as long as Catwoman uses it exactly as Rocksteady intended. | © Rocksteady Studios

Bio Shock Infinite

13. BioShock Infinite (2007)

Should Elizabeth wear the bird pendant or the cage? Do you throw the baseball at the interracial couple or turn it against the announcer? BioShock Infinite repeatedly pauses for decisions that look loaded with significance, only for most of them to produce a changed animation, a later callback or a different piece of dialogue. Its fixation on inevitability makes that deception thematically appropriate, but players are still riding the same rails toward Columbia’s predetermined revelation. | © Irrational Games

Dying Light 2 Stay Human

12. Dying Light 2 Stay Human (2022)

Techland promoted Dying Light 2 Stay Human as a reactive adventure where decisions could transform entire sections of the city. Assigning facilities does unlock faction-specific tools and alter parts of the environment, but the promised systemic consequences rarely reach beyond traversal perks and cosmetic changes. Several major choices influence character fates and the ending, yet most of Villedor remains remarkably stable. The city may belong to the survivors, but its urban planners clearly outrank the player. | © Techland

Fallout 3

11. Fallout 3 (2008)

The Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3 happily lets players become charitable saints, ruthless slavers or cannibals with suspiciously good people skills. Its central storyline shows much less flexibility, dragging every version of the Lone Wanderer toward Project Purity and an originally unavoidable final sacrifice. Radiation-resistant companions famously refused to solve the obvious problem until the Broken Steel expansion rewrote that absurdity. Bethesda offers substantial freedom between destinations, but it already selected the final stop. | © Bethesda Game Studios

The Walking Dead

10. Telltale's The Walking Dead (2012)

“Clementine will remember that” became one of gaming’s most effective anxiety triggers, even when Clementine’s memory could not reroute the plot. Saving Carley instead of Doug in Telltale’s The Walking Dead changes conversations and relationships, but merely postpones a destination both characters share. Other decisions reshape Lee’s reputation and determine who accompanies him during certain sequences without preventing the season’s defining tragedies. The choices matter deeply to the player; the apocalypse, rather rudely, proceeds according to schedule. | © Telltale Games

Skyrim

9. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim lets its hero join rival factions, replace jarls, murder allies and accumulate enough stolen cheese to destabilize the local economy. None of that seriously alters the Dragonborn’s confrontation with Alduin, whose return follows essentially the same sequence in every playthrough. Even the Civil War changes more uniforms and political appointments than it does the wider story. Bethesda built an extraordinary playground for personal adventures, but the main quest remains remarkably uninterested in the person undertaking it. | © Bethesda Game Studios

Far Cry 4

8. Far Cry 4 (2014)

Ajay Ghale spends much of Far Cry 4 choosing between Amita and Sabal, two rebel leaders who gradually transform every mission briefing into a competition for Kyrat’s worst future. Supporting either one changes objectives, character deaths and the postgame political outcome, although the campaign continues through much the same revolution. Ironically, the most consequential decision is doing nothing at the beginning: wait patiently for Pagan Min, and Ajay can finish his family business before dinner gets cold. | © Ubisoft Montreal

Cropped Mass Effect 3

7. Mass Effect 3 (2012)

BioWare spent two games teaching players to obsess over every rescued colonist, loyal squadmate and interrupted alien argument. Many of those decisions genuinely affect the genophage, the quarian-geth conflict and Shepard’s available allies, which made the original finale of Mass Effect 3 feel even more restrictive. After carrying hundreds of choices across the trilogy, players reached a last-minute selection between broadly defined outcomes distinguished largely by color. The Extended Cut added context, but it could not erase that first cosmic traffic-light impression. | © BioWare

Call of Cthulhu

6. Call of Cthulhu (2018)

Edward Pierce can investigate clues, improve specialized skills and respond differently as his sanity buckles under the pressure of forbidden knowledge. Those systems suggest Call of Cthulhu is ready to branch wildly, yet most roads lead through the same revelations, confrontations and tentacle-adjacent nightmares. Several endings exist, with certain options unlocked by earlier behavior, but the campaign connecting them is stubbornly linear. Cthulhu may be indifferent to human life; the plot is similarly unmoved by human input. | © Cyanide Studio

Tales from the Borderlands

5. Tales from the Borderlands (2014)

Tales from the Borderlands excels at making every impulsive reply feel capable of destroying a friendship, a business deal or possibly an entire planet. In practice, Rhys and Fiona remain locked into the same major disasters regardless of how charmingly or disastrously players handle each conversation. Earlier choices can influence relationships and determine which allies are available for the finale, but the central plot barely moves. The journey is personalized; the destination already has a reservation. | © Telltale Games

Hogwarts Legacy

4. Hogwarts Legacy (2023)

Hogwarts Legacy permits students to specialize in dark magic, master the Unforgivable Curses and attack enemies with spells that should prompt several uncomfortable staff meetings. The school barely reacts. Choosing a house alters the common room and one section of a quest, while the final decision concerning ancient magic changes little beyond the closing presentation. Sebastian’s storyline offers a more tangible consequence, but the broader adventure treats morality like an optional accessory—somewhere between a scarf and a new broom handle. | © Avalanche Software

Dark Souls 3

3. Dark Souls 3 (2016)

Dark Souls III buries its decisions beneath cryptic conversations, obscure gestures and NPC questlines that can collapse because someone entered the wrong room too early. Those actions unlock different character outcomes and several endings, but they do not significantly reshape the pilgrimage across Lothric. The same major areas and bosses still stand between the Ashen One and the First Flame. Players may decide what becomes of the world; they cannot persuade its enormous monsters to take the afternoon off. | © FromSoftware

Life is Strange

2. Life Is Strange (2015)

Rewinding time makes every decision in Life Is Strange seem like a puzzle with a perfect solution, until the consequences return wearing heavier boots. Friendships, conversations and Kate Marsh’s fate can change dramatically, but the finale reduces Max’s entire journey to one binary choice. One option preserves the town while erasing her week with Chloe; the other makes most of Arcadia Bay’s smaller outcomes irrelevant. After five episodes of butterfly effects, the last butterfly lands on a very large reset button. | © Dontnod Entertainment

Cyberpunk 2077

1. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

Selecting V’s life path initially makes Cyberpunk 2077 feel like three radically different RPGs, but Corpo, Nomad and Streetkid quickly merge into the same central storyline. Their exclusive opening missions and dialogue options add welcome flavor without rebuilding the campaign around V’s background. Important side quests can unlock allies, romances and genuinely different endings, especially when Phantom Liberty is included, so Night City is hardly unresponsive. Its origins simply promise three journeys and deliver three entrances to one. | © CD Projekt Red

1-15

Choice-driven games love reminding you that “your actions will have consequences,” but that promise often comes with an enormous asterisk. Dialogue options may change a character’s mood, alter one brief scene or swap the color of the final explosion, yet the story keeps marching toward the same destination. These 15 games sold players the fantasy of complete narrative control—only to reveal just how firmly the writers were holding the steering wheel.
