Doomed from the Start: 15 Games Where You Know You're Going to Die

1-15

Cropped Resistance Fall of Man

15. Resistance: Fall of Man (2006)

Taking cover feels sensible until the Chimera start firing weapons that shoot straight through it. Resistance: Fall of Man gives its alien invaders enough nasty hardware to make familiar shooter habits unreliable, especially on higher difficulties. Charging ahead usually earns a quick obituary. Learning which enemy deserves your last grenade becomes considerably more important than looking heroic with the rifle. | © Sony Computer Entertainment America

Bioshock II

14. BioShock 2 (2010)

That Big Daddy suit looks considerably sturdier than it feels when three Splicers interrupt a Little Sister’s gathering session. BioShock 2 rewards preparation: traps, hacked security, and a sensible escape route can prevent another embarrassing trip to a Vita-Chamber. Big Sisters are particularly good at exposing gaps in your strategy. Carrying an enormous drill does not automatically qualify you for childcare. | © 2K Games

A Way Out

13. A Way Out (2018)

Trusting your friend sounds lovely until they’re responsible for keeping you alive during a getaway. A Way Out puts two players through chases, shootouts, and hurried escapes where coordination occasionally means shouting contradictory instructions across the sofa. Its checkpoints are forgiving, thankfully. Otherwise, the real prison sentence would be replaying an entire chapter because your partner misunderstood a very straightforward plan. | © Electronic Arts

Dying Light The Beast

12. Dying Light: The Beast (2025)

Sunset is an excellent reason to reconsider that supposedly quick supply run. Dying Light: The Beast gives Kyle Crane monstrous strength, but nighttime still belongs to predators capable of turning a confident excursion into a desperate scramble. Parkour offers an escape, provided you actually make the jump. Missing a ledge with infected behind you is a remarkably efficient way to end an evening. | © Techland

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare 2007

11. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)

Try Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on Veteran and discover how much time a soldier can spend staring at the floor behind a concrete barrier. Enemy fire punishes the smallest exposure, while grenades discourage getting comfortable. The timed escape in “Mile High Club” takes that pressure to ridiculous extremes. Eventually, every doorway starts looking like a multiple-choice question you’ve answered incorrectly before. | © Infinity Ward

Cropped Heavenly Sword

10. Heavenly Sword (2007)

Button-mashing carries Nariko exactly as far as the next enemy who expects you to understand the combat system. Heavenly Sword demands attention to attack colors, stance changes, and counter timing, particularly when bosses start testing those lessons under pressure. Its relatively short campaign can acquire several extra hours through stubbornness alone. King Bohan is perfectly happy to administer the same exam again. | © Sony Computer Entertainment America

Cyberpunk 2077

9. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

Picking a fight before checking who’s holding the bigger gun remains an expensive hobby in Cyberpunk 2077. On Very Hard, exposed positions and poorly matched cyberware can get V flattened before that elaborate combat plan leaves the planning stage. There’s enormous satisfaction in eventually dismantling an encounter that previously destroyed you. First, though, Night City gets to make its point several times. | © CD Projekt Red

Far cry 2

8. Far Cry 2 (2008)

The rifle jams, the grass catches fire, and a patrol arrives while you’re trying to deal with the first two problems. Far Cry 2 excels at turning manageable fights into cascading disasters. A buddy might rescue you, but that safety net has limits. Keeping reliable equipment and scouting an approach suddenly seem less fussy after your latest roadside catastrophe. | © Ubisoft

Outlast2 B

7. Outlast (2013)

A dead end becomes a much bigger problem when your entire combat system consists of running away. In Outlast, Miles cannot shoot his pursuers, and the camcorder’s night vision burns through batteries you’ll desperately wish you’d collected. Panic makes navigation worse, which makes the next chase shorter. Eventually, you learn the corridors with the dedication of someone who has been murdered in all of them. | © Red Barrels

Mass Effect 3

6. Mass Effect 3 (2012)

The noise a Banshee makes is your cue to locate an exit. Mass Effect 3 mixes aggressive enemies with threats that can kill Shepard outright at close range, making a comfortable firing position temporary at best. Insanity difficulty demands careful power combinations and constant awareness of flanking routes. Your squadmates may believe you can save the galaxy, but they cannot fix your parking decisions. | © Electronic Arts

Persona 3

5. Persona 3 (2006)

One careless encounter in Tartarus can erase an evening’s confidence. Persona 3 makes elemental weaknesses dangerous in both directions: exploiting them wins battles, while exposing your own can let enemies seize control before you recover. If the protagonist falls, the original game ends the attempt regardless of who else remains standing. Healing before the next fight is considerably cheaper than discovering why you should have. | © Atlus

Shadow of the Colossus

4. Shadow of the Colossus (2005)

You’ve reached the weak point, raised your sword, and discovered that Wander has enough grip left for approximately one bad decision. Shadow of the Colossus turns climbing into a sustained argument with gravity. Finding the route up a giant is only half the battle; staying there requires patience. A desperate extra stab can undo several minutes of genuinely impressive mountaineering. | © Sony Computer Entertainment America

Ranking All Halo Games Halo Reach

3. Halo: Reach (2010)

Jackals protect themselves behind shields, Elites dodge your carefully aimed shots, and somebody always seems to have a plasma grenade ready. Halo: Reach on Legendary makes every stretch of occupied ground something you negotiate through repeated failure. Noble Six’s armor buys precious seconds rather than invulnerability. Finally clearing an encounter often means remembering exactly which rock you died behind on the previous attempt. | © Microsoft Game Studios

Nier Automata

2. NieR: Automata (2017)

Removing the wrong chip can kill you before an enemy gets the opportunity. NieR: Automata combines that mischievous streak with an opening stretch that offers no saving, making early mistakes particularly painful on harder settings. Later deaths can send you back to retrieve equipment from your previous body. Suddenly, the android corpse on the ground becomes the most important item on your itinerary. | © Square Enix

Final Fantasy 10

1. Final Fantasy X (2001)

Seymour Flux has a talent for finding parties that have been coasting. Final Fantasy X lets you settle into its turn-based rhythm before bosses demand proper preparation, protection against status effects, and more thought than selecting your strongest attack. Optional superbosses push that lesson much further. The battle menu gives you unlimited thinking time, which makes a terrible decision feel unusually personal. | © Square Electronic Arts

1-15

Saving the world is a tough assignment when you already know you won’t survive it. These 15 video games make your impending death part of the deal, then give you reasons to keep playing anyway. You might be buying someone else a future or demanding a decent explanation. Either way, that health bar starts to feel a little dishonest.
