15 Horror Games That Are Actually Scary

1-15

Devotion 2019

15. Devotion (2019)

The family apartment in Devotion feels inhabited long before it feels haunted. Television programs, household clutter, and a daughter’s ambitions establish a Taiwanese home worth paying attention to, making its deterioration genuinely painful. Moving between different periods reveals how parental expectations and religious obsession poison the family’s life. Supernatural shocks punctuate the story, but the hardest moments involve recognizing what someone has convinced himself is an act of love. | © Red Candle Games

Deadspace

14. Dead Space (2008)

Headshots are a difficult habit to break, especially when something made of former coworkers is sprinting toward you. Dead Space demands that you sever Necromorph limbs instead, turning panic into a test of precision. Isaac Clarke’s engineering equipment can handle the job; your nerves might not. Even checking your inventory leaves the action running, so a routine ammunition count aboard the Ishimura becomes an opportunity for something horrible to interrupt. | © Electronic Arts

Cropped Outlast

13. Outlast (2013)

Investigative journalism apparently comes with neither hazard pay nor a sensible exit strategy. As reporter Miles Upshur, you enter Mount Massive Asylum carrying a camcorder and discover that documenting atrocities is considerably easier than escaping them. Outlast makes its night vision indispensable, then asks you to keep feeding it batteries. Without a combat option, learning the building means memorizing escape routes while being chased, an educational method with some obvious drawbacks. | © Red Barrels

Darkwood 2017

12. Darkwood (2017)

All afternoon, that wardrobe looked heavy enough to block the door. Now something outside is testing your workmanship. Darkwood divides survival between scavenging its diseased woodland and defending a hideout after sunset, with a restricted field of vision that makes its overhead perspective surprisingly unhelpful. You can see the room’s layout without seeing everything inside it. The result is a miserable little renovation project where surviving until morning counts as excellent craftsmanship. | © Acid Wizard Studio

Phasmophobia

11. Phasmophobia (2020)

Everyone has jokes until somebody has to go back inside for the thermometer. Phasmophobia sends up to four players into haunted locations to identify ghosts through evidence, making investigation the reason you linger somewhere clearly dangerous. Equipment gives the group something practical to discuss; a hunt makes that discussion abruptly irrelevant. Its best trick is letting confidence develop naturally, then exposing how little your beautifully organized team has actually prepared for being pursued. | © Kinetic Games

Alien solation

10. Alien: Isolation (2014)

A locker is an excellent place to reconsider your entire plan. Amanda Ripley spends much of Alien: Isolation improvising around a creature she cannot kill, using distractions and whatever equipment she can scavenge aboard Sevastopol station. The Alien’s reactive hunting makes a successful escape feel provisional rather than solved. Even acquiring a flamethrower only buys breathing room, which is a wonderfully cruel reward for anyone expecting the traditional late-game transformation into an action hero. | © Creative Assembly

Amnesia The Bunker

9. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010)

Don’t look at the monster. That sounds manageable until you need to know whether it has left. Amnesia: The Dark Descent makes witnessing horrors and remaining in darkness strain Daniel’s sanity, while his lantern consumes precious oil. These competing pressures make hiding feel almost as unpleasant as exploring Castle Brennenburg. Meanwhile, the memories explaining his presence offer their own reason to dread progress: recovering the truth might be worse than remaining confused. | © Frictional Games

FATAL FRAME II Crimson Butterfly REMAKE

8. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake (2026)

Looking directly at a ghost is mandatory here, which feels like an unreasonable workplace requirement. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake arms Mio with the Camera Obscura as she searches for her twin, Mayu, in a village trapped by a horrific ritual. Photographing spirits forces you to study the very things you would prefer to avoid. The remake also lets the sisters hold hands, lending a small gesture of reassurance real weight amid the surrounding misery. | © Koei Tecmo

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard

7. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)

Dinner with the Bakers establishes a household policy: you are staying, and your objections are adorable. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard brings the series’ resource management and locked-door puzzles into first person, putting Ethan Winters within uncomfortable touching distance of his hosts. Jack’s pursuit makes retracing familiar rooms dangerous, while Marguerite supplies ample justification for never entering another crawlspace. Underneath the grotesque family theatrics sits a carefully rationed survival horror game that makes every missed shot sting. | © Capcom

Visage

6. Visage (2020)

You will develop strong opinions about lightbulbs. Inside the sprawling home of Visage, darkness and paranormal events damage your sanity, turning basic household maintenance into a survival concern. The stories of previous inhabitants send familiar rooms into increasingly awful territory, with lengthy stretches of uncertainty between overt threats. Its obscure puzzles can test patience as much as courage, but that house remains horribly convincing: you recognize the furniture, understand the layout, and still hate being there. | © SadSquare Studio

MA Di SON

5. MADiSON (2022)

Shake the photograph. Study it. Regret asking. The instant camera in MADiSON connects Luca’s surroundings with the supernatural, making photography essential to solving puzzles and uncovering a bloody ritual. Taking a picture becomes a deliberate invitation for the house to produce something unpleasant, and the sound design makes waiting for that response exhausting. Then Blue Knees enters the equation, providing a persuasive argument that creepy children’s songs should never come with an accompanying creature. | © Bloodious Games

Amnesia The Bunker 2023

4. Amnesia: The Bunker (2023)

A revolver should simplify things. In Amnesia: The Bunker, firing it can solve one problem while telling the creature in the walls exactly where to investigate. Henri Clément’s escape from a wartime bunker revolves around similarly unpleasant trade-offs: spend fuel to maintain the lights, risk noise to open a route, or take a longer journey through danger. Flexible solutions make you responsible for the plan, leaving nobody else to blame when your clever shortcut attracts company. | © Frictional Games

Silent Hill 2

3. Silent Hill 2 (2001)

James Sunderland receives a letter from his dead wife and follows it to a town where almost every conversation makes the situation less reassuring. The original Silent Hill 2 builds its psychological horror through uneasy performances, oppressive spaces, and creatures whose designs reward uncomfortable scrutiny. Akira Yamaoka’s music allows tenderness to exist alongside industrial ugliness. That sadness matters: spending time with these damaged people makes the nightmare harder to dismiss once the immediate danger passes. | © Konami

Pt msn

2. P.T. (2014)

After enough trips around the same corridor, you start checking photographs like they owe you an explanation. P.T. uses repetition to train your attention, then punishes that attention with changes you desperately wish you hadn’t noticed. Lisa’s appearances and the radio’s domestic horror make the house feel occupied by a history you cannot escape. Created as a playable teaser for the canceled Silent Hills, it achieves an extraordinary amount with barely enough floor space for a viewing appointment. | © Konami

Silent Hill

1. Silent Hill (1999)

Listen to that radio: something is close, although the fog offers no helpful clarification. The original Silent Hill gives Harry Mason just enough warning to worry while he searches for his missing daughter. Its rough textures and uncertain shapes remain effective because they leave so much visual information unresolved. Midwich Elementary School is especially nasty, transforming a recognizable childhood environment into somewhere you navigate reluctantly, with the map open and absolutely no enthusiasm for the next classroom. | © Konami

1-15

You paid for the game, installed it, and now you’re finding excuses not to open the next door. Money well spent. The scariest horror games make progress feel like a terrible idea, whether you’re following footsteps upstairs or counting bullets you already know won’t be enough. These 15 picks earn their scares through suffocating atmosphere, unsettling enemies, and the unpleasant responsibility of having to press forward yourself. Watching someone else play is allowed, but we’ll both know why.
