When it gets dark early and cold outside, a long solo adventure hits just right. Here are 15 single-player games to lose yourself in this winter.

15 Celebrities Who Gave Back in Surprising Ways
15. Firewatch (2016)
A fire lookout tower in Wyoming does not sound like the setting for anything life changing. Firewatch proves otherwise, turning a summer job into a slow unraveling of trust, loneliness, and the stories we tell ourselves when nobody is watching. Everything hinges on a voice on a radio and the choices you make talking back to it. The wilderness here feels enormous, but the game is really about two people trying not to feel so small inside it. | © Panic
14. Subnautica (2018)
Waking up alone in the wreckage of a crashed starship, with nothing but ocean in every direction, is still one of gaming's great gut punches. Subnautica hands you a scanner and a sense of dread and tells you to figure the rest out yourself. Every dive gets a little deeper, a little darker, a little more unnerving. Few games have made curiosity feel this much like courage. | © Unknown Worlds Entertainment
13. Hollow Knight: Silksong (2025)
Years of waiting built up enormous expectations for Hollow Knight: Silksong, and the wait itself became part of the story. Hallownest's charm was always in its quiet dread, bugs and ruins rendered with more sorrow than any dialogue could manage. Silksong trades some of that stillness for speed, putting Hornet's acrobatics and blade work front and center. Whether it lands exactly like its predecessor almost does not matter. People were ready to disappear into this world again the moment it reappeared. | © Team Cherry
12. Ghost of Tsushima (2020)
Jin Sakai starts the game as a soldier following rules, and ends it as something the rules never accounted for. Ghost of Tsushima turns feudal Japan into a place you want to just stand still in, wind pushing you toward your next objective instead of a marker on a map. Sword fights carry weight and ceremony, each duel feeling like a conversation more than a button mash. It is a rare open world game that trusts silence as much as spectacle. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
11. Death Stranding (2019)
Strap a crying baby to your chest, load up a few hundred pounds of cargo, and start walking. That is Death Stranding in its purest form, and somehow it works. Hideo Kojima builds an America stitched back together one delivery at a time, loneliness turned into something you can carry on your back. The further you walk, the more the game convinces you that connection is worth the weight. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment / 505 Games
10. The Last of Us Part I (2022)
Joel carries Ellie through a ruined America, and the carrying is the whole point. The Last of Us Part I rebuilds that original PlayStation 3 story with enough detail that every cracked window and overgrown lobby feels lived in. The combat is scrappy and mean, forcing you to feel every swing of a pipe. What stays with you is quieter than the violence, a look exchanged in a hospital hallway that changes everything after it. | © PlayStation Publishing
9. Stardew Valley (2016)
A cluttered, overgrown farm left behind by a grandfather is where everything in Stardew Valley begins. There is no urgency here, just crops to plant, fish to catch, and neighbors who slowly stop treating you like a stranger. The pixel art hides a surprising amount of feeling once you have spent a few in-game years in Pelican Town. Somehow a farming game about routine ends up being one of the most relaxing things you can do with a controller. | © ConcernedApe / Chucklefish
8. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)
Night City does not care if you survive it. Cyberpunk 2077 drops you into a place built from neon signs, corporate greed, and people barely holding themselves together, V included. The rocky launch is old news now, and what remains is a sprawling story about identity told through chrome implants and dying bodies. Few games let you romance, betray, and genuinely mourn a character the way this one does with Johnny Silverhand. | © CD Projekt
7. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (2025)
Hans Capon rides beside you, and somehow a sequel about medieval Bohemia manages to feel even more stubbornly real than the first game. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II keeps the dice loaded against you in the best way, making every sword fight clumsy and every negotiation matter. There is no magic here, no dragons, just mud, hunger, and a world that refuses to simplify itself for your comfort. Few games trust history this much to be interesting on its own. | © Deep Silver
6. Hogwarts Legacy (2023)
Flying lessons, House rivalries, and a castle that seems to rearrange itself on purpose. That is the pitch of Hogwarts Legacy, and it delivers on the specific fantasy of actually living inside the Harry Potter books rather than watching someone else do it. The spell combat gets surprisingly deep once you start chaining curses together in the middle of a duel. For anyone who spent childhood waiting for a letter that never came, this is the closest thing to an apology. | © Warner Bros. Games
5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)
Geralt of Rivia spends most of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt doing favors for people who do not deserve them. That is the trick of it. The Bloody Baron questline hands you a mystery about a missing wife and slowly turns into something much sadder and harder to fix with a sword. No other open world has made side quests feel this much like actual literature. | © CD Projekt
4. Baldur's Gate 3 (2023)
Three acts, one tiefling, and a tadpole burrowing into your brain. Baldur's Gate 3 somehow turns a Dungeons and Dragons ruleset into something that reacts to nearly anything you try, including setting oil on fire instead of fighting fair. Astarion alone convinced a generation of players to romance a vampire against their better judgment. Few games reward curiosity this consistently or this often with disaster. | © Larian Studios
3. Elden Ring (2022)
Dying over and over to the same boss stops feeling like punishment in Elden Ring and starts feeling like homework you actually want to finish. The Lands Between hide dungeons, legends, and horrors behind cliffs that most games would never bother decorating at all. Malenia remains the closest thing modern gaming has to a final exam nobody passes on the first try. The game never explains itself, and somehow that is the whole appeal. | © Bandai Namco
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
Snow, dragons, and a voice shouting "fus ro dah" into the void. Skyrim handed players a frozen province and basically no instructions on what to do with it. You could become a vampire, marry a blacksmith, or just steal every cabbage in Whiterun for fun. Over a decade later, people are still finding reasons to go back and lose another forty hours to a mountain. | © Bethesda Softworks
1. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)
Arthur Morgan is dying, and he knows it long before the player does. Red Dead Redemption 2 spends its runtime watching an outlaw try to make peace with a life that was never going to end well. There is no rush here, just mud, weather, and conversations on horseback that build an entire person out of small talk. Few endings in gaming have landed this hard while saying so little out loud. | © Rockstar GamesWhen it gets dark early and cold outside, a long solo adventure hits just right.
