Top 15 Biggest Plot Holes in Video Game History

1-15

Ignacio Weil Ignacio Weil
Gaming - September 12th 2026, 21:00 GMT+2
Final fantasy remake intergrade biggs

15. Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020): Biggs’ survival makes no sense given the events of the original game

Biggs appears thoroughly doomed when Cloud finds him wounded on the Sector 7 pillar, moments before thousands of tons of steel come crashing down. The ending later reveals him recovering in bed, without explaining how he escaped an event that killed nearly everyone around him. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth eventually reveals that the Whispers transported Biggs into another world, turning the apparent plot hole into part of the trilogy’s expanding multiverse mystery. | © Square Enix

Fallout 4 2015 Vault 95

14. Fallout 4 (2015): Vault 95’s experiment relies on Jet — a drug that canonically wasn’t invented until after the Great War

Vault 95 was stocked with addictive substances before its residents were sealed underground, and Jet can be found among the drugs hidden there. That clashes with Fallout 2, where Myron claims to have created Jet decades after the bombs fell by experimenting with fumes produced from Brahmin waste. Earlier dialogue already casts some doubt on Myron’s honesty, giving Bethesda a narrow escape hatch. Even so, the pre-war Jet references leave one of the franchise’s messiest continuity debates permanently wheezing. | © Bethesda Game Studios

Cropped Life Is Strange 2015 max bathroom

13. Life Is Strange (2015): Max’s first rewind in the bathroom should not teleport her to the classroom

Max normally rewinds the world around herself while remaining physically rooted in place, allowing her to retain objects, information, and any ground she has covered. Yet after Chloe is shot in the bathroom, Max suddenly finds herself sitting in Jefferson’s classroom again. Her first uncontrolled use may simply be stronger than later rewinds, but the distinction is never properly established. The game introduces a much larger version of her power and then quietly takes it away. | © DONTNOD Entertainment

Batman Arkham Origins 2013 gadgets

12. Batman: Arkham Origins (2013): Batman’s gadgets are called prototypes in later-set games, but are mysteriously fully functional in the past

Setting Arkham Origins years before the Rocksteady trilogy created an awkward problem: an inexperienced Batman still needed the gadgets that made the previous games enjoyable. Consequently, Bruce uses equipment resembling the grapnel boost and disruptor long before later-set installments present comparable technology as experimental. Different names and upgraded designs provide a possible explanation, though their functions remain suspiciously familiar. Apparently, even the world’s greatest detective occasionally forgets that he already built the thing Lucius Fox just invented. | © WB Games Montréal

Cropped Wolfenstein The New Order 2014 B J Blazkowicz

11. Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014): B.J. Blazkowicz stays fit and muscular after spending 14 years in a catatonic state

Fourteen years in a near-catatonic state should leave B.J. Blazkowicz unable to stand without extensive rehabilitation, never mind sprint through a hospital and dismantle the Nazi regime. Instead, he wakes with his heroic physique intact and returns to killing soldiers almost immediately. A nurse may have prevented him from wasting away entirely, but attentive care cannot preserve combat conditioning for over a decade. Medical realism clearly lost this fight to the considerably more important fantasy of shooting Nazis. | © MachineGames

Cropped call of duty modern warfare 2 no russian

10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009): Somehow, no one recognizes Makarov during the infamous airport massacre

Makarov conducts the Zakhaev International Airport massacre without a mask, surrounded by witnesses and security cameras, then leaves an American operative behind to frame the United States. The plan works so perfectly that Russia launches an invasion before investigators apparently recognize one of the world’s most notorious terrorists in the footage. English speech and American weapons support the deception, but Makarov’s uncovered face should complicate matters considerably. The entire war depends upon every airport camera developing selective blindness at once. | © Infinity Ward

Cropped Heavy Rain 2010 Scott Shelby

9. Heavy Rain (2010): You control Scott Shelby as a detective even while the killer is committing murders elsewhere

Scott Shelby spends much of Heavy Rain posing as a private detective while secretly destroying evidence that could identify him as the Origami Killer. The twist becomes difficult to defend during the antique-shop sequence, where Scott murders Manfred while the player is conveniently denied the moment despite controlling him. His private thoughts also avoid knowledge he unquestionably possesses, turning fair misdirection into outright deception. Shelby does not merely fool the other characters; he somehow conceals information from the person operating his body. | © Quantic Dream

Cropped Heavy Rain 2010 Ethan blackouts

8. Heavy Rain (again) (2010): Ethan’s unexplained blackouts conveniently hide his connection to the murders

Ethan repeatedly loses consciousness before awakening in the rain with an origami figure in his hand, precisely when another child has been abducted by the Origami Killer. The pattern strongly suggests a psychic connection, split personality, or manipulation by Scott Shelby. None of those possibilities receives a payoff; the blackouts simply disappear once they have finished making Ethan look suspicious. They originated in a discarded supernatural storyline, leaving the final version of Heavy Rain with clues pointing toward an explanation that no longer exists. | © Quantic Dream

Cropped Borderlands New U Stations

7. Borderlands (2009): New-U Stations resurrect players, but major character deaths are still treated as permanent

Death is a temporary financial inconvenience whenever players use a New-U Station, which reconstructs their body and sends them back into the fight. Story characters receive no such courtesy: once someone dies during a cutscene, Pandora’s resurrection network apparently closes for maintenance. Gearbox later clarified that New-U Stations are not canonical and exist purely as a gameplay mechanic, resolving the narrative contradiction outside the games themselves. It works, although the machines’ chatty in-world presentation makes them unusually difficult to ignore. | © Gearbox Software

Ac desmond lucy

6. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (2010): Desmond kills Lucy under mind control, and the reason arrives far too late

Juno seizes control of Desmond and forces him to stab Lucy during Brotherhood’s abrupt ending, but the game offers almost no immediate explanation for choosing her. Revelations later reveals through The Lost Archive DLC that Lucy had defected to the Templars, while subsequent dialogue establishes that Juno showed Desmond the consequences of her betrayal. The answer exists, then, but it arrived fragmented across later content. Anyone who only played the main campaigns was left watching a central character die because the exposition missed its train. | © Ubisoft Montreal

God of war 2 2007 msn

5. God of War II (2007): Kratos’ time travel creates paradoxes that the series never fully explains

Kratos uses the Loom of Fate to return to the moment Zeus betrayed him, preventing his own death without erasing the journey that allowed him to change it. He then travels further into the past and brings the Titans into the present, apparently removing them from centuries of Greek history. The game never defines whether these actions rewrite one timeline, create another, or leave travelers immune to paradoxes. Kratos defeats causality through the same strategy he applies everywhere else: overwhelming violence and no follow-up questions. | © Santa Monica Studio

Fallout 3 2008 ending

4. Fallout 3 (2008): The player sacrifices themselves for Project Purity — even when immune companions could do it instead

The original ending forces the player or Sarah Lyons to enter Project Purity’s lethally irradiated control room and activate the purifier. This noble sacrifice becomes rather silly when Fawkes, a radiation-immune super mutant, is standing nearby and refuses because it is supposedly the protagonist’s “destiny.” Charon and Sergeant RL-3 are similarly impractical options despite their resistance to radiation. The Broken Steel expansion finally allows companions to perform the task, effectively admitting that common sense should not have required downloadable content. | © Bethesda Game Studios

Sonic Adventure 2 moon

3. Sonic Adventure 2 (2001): The Moon stays half-destroyed across games, yet later titles show it perfectly fine

Eggman fires the Eclipse Cannon and blows away a substantial portion of the Moon, an astronomical remodeling project that should remain visible throughout the series. Later Sonic games regularly display a perfectly round lunar body as though the cannon merely switched off a lamp. Director Takashi Iizuka offered the wonderfully audacious explanation that the Moon rotated and now keeps its damaged side facing away from Earth. That answer technically covers the missing crater, provided orbital mechanics have agreed to stop participating in the franchise. | © Sonic Team

Cropped Devil May Cry 2 2003 Dantes disappearance

2. Devil May Cry 2 (2003): Dante’s disappearance and the confusing timeline order leave fans wondering what really happened

After defeating Argosax, Dante discovers that the portal home has closed and rides deeper into the Demon World on a motorcycle. The final scene lets Lucia hear an engine outside his shop, implying his return without confirming how he escaped. Capcom later moved Devil May Cry 2 earlier in the official chronology, placing two sequels after it and proving that Dante eventually came back. The continuity now supplies the destination, but the game still skips the rather important matter of how he drove out of Hell. | © Capcom

Resident Evil

1. Resident Evil series (1996–present): Heroes constantly get bitten, spat on, or touched — and never get infected

Playable characters routinely survive bites, claws, acid, and other contaminated attacks by spraying themselves with herbs and continuing toward the next locked door. The story treats infection very differently: Jill Valentine’s exposure in Resident Evil 3, for example, becomes a major crisis requiring a vaccine. The usual explanation is that most combat damage never happened in canon, separating gameplay from the official narrative. Sensible as that distinction is, it remains amusing to watch Leon become a zombie chew toy before fixing himself with a plant. | © Capcom

Video games regularly ask us to accept magic, time travel, alternate dimensions, and heroes carrying enough weapons to stock a small country. Even so, certain stories contain inconsistencies that no amount of lore can comfortably explain. From characters forgetting their own abilities to endings that contradict everything established beforehand, these famous video game plot holes have kept players arguing long after the credits rolled.
