The Physician — 15. The Physician (2013)

Noah Gordon's novel supplies the plot for The Physician, which follows an English boy who travels to Persia to study medicine under Avicenna. The real Ibn Sina died in 1037, decades before the film's hero supposedly trains under him, and the timeline throughout is compressed to fit one lifetime. Isfahan is recreated with sets built in Morocco, since the actual city offered no such access. Medieval medicine gets a tidier, more heroic story than the historical record allows. | © UFA Cinema

The Eagle 2011 — 14. The Eagle (2011)
A Roman legion's lost eagle standard drives the entire plot of The Eagle, based on Rosemary Sutcliff's 1954 novel The Eagle of the Ninth. The Ninth Legion's disappearance was long blamed on a doomed campaign into Scotland, a theory popular in the 1950s but largely abandoned by historians since. Roman records actually place elements of the Ninth in the Netherlands around 120 AD, well after its supposed wipeout. Cropped agora — 13. Agora (2009)
Hypatia of Alexandria gets a scientific martyrdom in Agora that the historical record doesn't fully support. The film has her on the verge of discovering heliocentric orbits before her death in 415 AD, but no ancient source credits her with that. Socrates Scholasticus, writing closer to her lifetime, describes her death at the hands of a mob but says nothing about astronomy being the motive. Two French officers spend sixteen years dueling each other across Europe in The Duellists, Ridley Scott's 1977 debut. Joseph Conrad's 1908 story "The Duel" inspired the script, and Conrad based his tale loosely on real Napoleonic-era officers named Dupont and Fournier. The actual feud, if it happened at all, is far thinner on documented detail than either Conrad or the film suggests. The Messenger The Story of Joan of Arc — 11. The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999)
Joan of Arc burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431, a fact The Messenger gets right while reshaping almost everything leading up to it. Luc Besson's film gives her visions a psychological ambiguity, hinting they might be delusion rather than divine contact, which has no basis in the trial transcripts that survive from her actual interrogation. Those records, kept in remarkable detail by her judges, show a defendant calm and consistent under pressure. The King — 10. The King (2019)
Timothee Chalamet plays Henry V as a reluctant, brooding king in The King, but the real Henry campaigned in Wales and France for years before his father died. The film also invents a French assassin sent to kill him, which never happened. Battle of Agincourt casualty figures are still debated, but the movie's staging owes more to mud and mood than to any chronicle. Mary Queen of Scots was executed in 1587, a year before the Armada sailed, though the script tightens the timeline for effect. Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson play sisters competing for Henry VIII's attention in The Other Boleyn Girl, based on Philippa Gregory's novel rather than any court record. Mary Boleyn's affair with the king did happen, but the sisters were not the scheming rivals the film makes them out to be. Anne Boleyn's downfall in 1536 involved political enemies at court, not a jealous sibling plot. A teenage girl meets an English colonist and the entire history of Jamestown gets folded into a love story in The New World. Pocahontas was around eleven years old when the English arrived in 1607, not the young woman Q'orianka Kilcher plays opposite Colin Farrell. She was later kidnapped by the colonists in 1613 and used as a bargaining chip, a detail the film treats as almost incidental. The French ship Acheron is fictional, standing in for a war that involved hundreds of real vessels. James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 novel gave The Last of the Mohicans its title and its central problem: the Mohican people were never actually dying out the way the story claims. The 1757 siege of Fort William Henry did happen, and the massacre afterward is documented by survivors.
