Penny Dreadful natalie dormer cropped processed by imagy — 15. Penny Dreadful (2014-2016)
Victorian monster fiction got blended into one show, and somehow Dracula, Frankenstein, and Dorian Gray all shared the same foggy streets without it feeling crowded. Penny Dreadful leaned hard into gothic dread, letting Eva Green's Vanessa Ives carry whole episodes on dread and restraint alone. The sex and violence got attention, but the show's real strength was its patience with sorrow. Few series have made Victorian London feel this soaked in grief. | © Showtime

Elijah Mikaelson from The Originals — 14. The Originals (2013-2018)
Klaus Mikaelson was supposed to be a side villain on The Vampire Diaries, and then the writers made the mistake of letting him be interesting. The Originals spun him off into New Orleans and built a whole saga out of family loyalty curdling into violence. Elijah's quiet nobility against Klaus's chaos gave the show its real engine, more than any witch or wolf subplot. It understood that the scariest thing in a vampire story is usually your own brother. | © The CW

Charmed — 13. Charmed (1998-2006)
Three sisters in San Francisco inherited a family grimoire, and an entire generation of teenagers decided witchcraft looked like the coolest possible inheritance. Charmed never took itself too seriously, mixing demon-of-the-week plots with genuine warmth between Prue, Piper, and Phoebe. The Power of Three was corny by design, and that's exactly why it worked. Nobody watched for subtlety, they watched because it felt like hanging out with sisters who happened to vanquish evil on weeknights. | © The CW

Midnight Mass — 12. Midnight Mass (2021)
A small island community gets a new priest, and nothing about his arrival sits right from the first sermon. Midnight Mass takes its time, letting conversations about faith and guilt stretch long before anything supernatural even shows up. When the horror does arrive, it's tangled so tightly with religious conviction that the scares feel almost like sermons themselves. Mike Flanagan built something that lingers less in jump scares and more in quiet dread about belief itself. | © Netflix

Grimm — 11. Grimm (2011-2017)
Detective Nick Burkhardt finds out he's a Grimm, descended from the fairy tale hunters, and suddenly Portland is crawling with creatures wearing human faces. Grimm turned every episode into a monster procedural dressed up in old folklore, swapping serial killers for wesen with real teeth. The show never asked to be prestige television, it just wanted to have fun with fairy tale mythology stretched over six seasons. That lack of pretension is exactly what made it easy to keep watching. | © NBC

Evil — 10. Evil (2019-2024)
A priest in training, a skeptic, and a contractor walk into a church basement to investigate a possible miracle. That is the actual setup of Evil, and it plays it with a straight face while still finding room for genuine dread. David Acosta, Kristen Bouchard, and Ben Shakir spend four seasons arguing about demons, technology, and whether evil needs a devil at all. Few shows managed to be this funny and this unsettling in the same scene. | © Paramount+

The Fall of the House of Usher — 9. The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Mike Flanagan took Edgar Allan Poe's entire catalog and poured it into one cursed family. The Fall of the House of Usher turns Roderick Usher's children into walking cautionary tales, each one picked off in a way that nods to a specific Poe story. Carla Gugino floats through the whole thing as a figure who might be death itself, or something worse. It is bleak, it is angry about wealth, and it never once lets you root for the people at the top. | © Netflix

American Horror Story — 8. American Horror Story (2011-)
Season one alone gave us the Rubber Man, Tate Langdon, and a house that eats its tenants alive. American Horror Story rebuilt itself every year with a new cast of ghosts, witches, or clowns, which meant the show never had time to go stale. Jessica Lange turning Constance Langdon into something both pathetic and terrifying remains the high point nobody has topped since. Anthology horror barely existed on this scale before Ryan Murphy decided to try it. | © FX

Wednesday — 7. Wednesday (2022-)
Nevermore Academy runs on the kind of deadpan energy only Jenna Ortega could sell this well. Wednesday hands its lead a cello, a murder mystery, and zero patience for anyone around her, and somehow that combination works every episode. The hallway dance scene became the moment everyone clipped and replayed, proof that a single beat can outlive an entire season. Addams Family nostalgia got a teenager with a flashlight and a grudge, and it paid off. | © Netflix

The Haunting of Hill House — 6. The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Grief gets a floor plan in The Haunting of Hill House, with every room standing in for a different kind of damage. The Crain siblings return to the house that broke their family, and the show cuts between their childhood and adult selves without ever losing the thread. That unbroken six minute dinner scene, all overlapping resentment and old wounds, says more about family trauma than most films manage in two hours. Horror rarely sits with sadness this patiently. | © Netflix

The Vampire Diaries — 5. The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)
Elena Gilbert had two brothers in love with her, and somehow that was the least dramatic part of The Vampire Diaries. Mystic Falls burned through more plot twists in one season than most shows manage in five. Doppelgangers, resurrections, whole timelines undone by one necklace, the show never once paused to catch its breath. That relentless pace is exactly why people couldn't stop watching. | © The CW

Stranger Things — 4. Stranger Things (2016-)
A kid vanishes into a wall, and suddenly a whole town is dealing with government labs and an alternate dimension. Stranger Things built its world on that kind of escalation, dressed in Dungeons & Dragons references and synth music. Winona Ryder's Christmas light alphabet is one of those images that stuck around long after the episode ended. It made 1980s nostalgia feel less like an aesthetic and more like a genuine ache. | © Netflix

Buffy from Buffy The Vampire Slayer — 3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
Sunnydale High sat on a Hellmouth, which somehow made perfect sense as a metaphor for being a teenager. Buffy the Vampire Slayer turned monster fighting into something funnier and sadder than anyone expected from the premise. There was an entire musical episode, and it worked. Joss Whedon's dialogue gave an actual rhythm to every quip, and that rhythm still holds up. | © The WB

Cropped The X Files 1993 — 2. The X-Files (1993-2018, 2016-2018)
Mulder believed, Scully doubted, and that tension carried The X-Files through alien conspiracies and monster-of-the-week cases for over two decades. Some episodes left you checking your closet before bed. Others, like the one with the killer cockroaches, just made you laugh. Few shows balanced genuine dread with that much personality. | © Fox

Supernatural — 1. Supernatural (2005-2020)
Two brothers, one car, and a trunk full of weapons against literally every monster in American folklore. That's Supernatural in a sentence, though fifteen seasons gave it room to become much stranger than that. Sam and Dean Winchester fought demons, angels, and eventually God himself, somehow keeping the family drama just as central as the apocalypse. Fifteen years is a long time to stay in one story, and this one earned every season of it. | © The CW
