What We Do In The Shadows — 15. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Four vampire roommates arguing about dishes is funnier than it has any right to be. What We Do in the Shadows finds its comfort in domestic mundanity colliding with centuries of undead baggage. Viago still pining over a lost love after decades says more about heartbreak than most dramas bother to. The horror is all setup, the punchline is always human. | © Paramount Pictures

Shaun of the Dead — 14. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Nobody expects a zombie outbreak to feel this manageable. Simon Pegg plays Shaun like a guy more annoyed by his own life than by the undead takeover happening around him, which is exactly why it works. The pub standoff near the end turns survival into something almost cozy, friends shoulder to shoulder against the end of the world. It is proof that the apocalypse goes down easier with people you actually like. | © Universal Pictures

The Others — 13. The Others (2001)
Grief has a way of making old houses feel even bigger. The Others traps Nicole Kidman in a fog-choked mansion where every curtain stays drawn and every creak means something. The twist lands hard, but it is the quiet dread beforehand that lingers, children who cannot handle light, a mother unraveling by inches. Few ghost stories manage to feel this tender while still being terrifying. | © Dimension Films

Cropped Crimson Peak — 12. Crimson Peak (2013)
A house that bleeds red clay through its floorboards sounds like nightmare fuel, and somehow it still feels inviting. Crimson Peak drowns itself in velvet, snow, and candlelight until the horror starts to look like a fairy tale gone feverish. Guillermo del Toro cares more about mood and heartbreak than jump scares, letting Mia Wasikowska wander rooms that practically breathe sorrow. It is the rare ghost story you want to live inside, not escape. | © Universal Pictures

Jennifers Body 2009 1 — 11. Jennifer's Body (2009)
Megan Fox eating her way through a small town says more about female rage than most horror movies even attempt. Jennifer's Body got dismissed on arrival and found its real audience years later, once people stopped looking at the poster and actually watched the film. Needy and Jennifer's friendship curdles into something messier and more honest than most teen horror bothers with. It took a decade, but everyone eventually caught up to what it was doing. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped The Lost Boys 1987 — 10. The Lost Boys (1987)
A motorcycle gang of teenage vampires on the boardwalk sounds like a fever dream, and The Lost Boys leans all the way into it. The whole thing runs on saxophone solos, hair gel, and the sense that being undead might actually look pretty cool. Kiefer Sutherland struts through every scene like he owns the California coastline, which, for about two hours, he does. It turned teenage rebellion into something you could sink your teeth into. | © Warner Bros.

Scream — 9. Scream (1996)
Teenagers in 1996 did not expect a slasher movie to also make fun of slasher movies while still being scary. Scream pulled it off anyway, opening with Drew Barrymore getting grilled on horror trivia before anything else even happens. Wes Craven built an entire film out of characters who had seen the same movies the audience had. The joke never undercuts the tension, it just makes the knife feel sharper. | © Paramount Pictures

Edward Scissorhands — 8. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Suburbia never looked stranger than the day Edward showed up with scissors for hands and nowhere to put them down. Edward Scissorhands turns pastel houses and manicured lawns into their own kind of horror, all smiling neighbors and quiet cruelty. Johnny Depp barely speaks, but his face does all the damage the dialogue doesn't. Tim Burton made loneliness look like topiary art, and somehow that's the part people remember most. | © 20th Century Fox

The Nightmare Before Christmas — 7. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington gets bored of Halloween and decides to steal Christmas instead, which is as reasonable a plot as any stop-motion film has ever had. The Nightmare Before Christmas built an entire town out of pumpkins and skeletons without once feeling like a gimmick. Every frame looks handmade because it was, down to the stitching on Sally's patchwork skin. Thirty years later, kids still can't decide which holiday it actually belongs to. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped Sleepy Hollow 1999 — 6. Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Headless horsemen do not usually come with this much style, but Sleepy Hollow makes decapitation look like fine art. Tim Burton drenches the whole village in fog and blue light until it feels like a fairy tale gone septic. Johnny Depp plays Ichabod Crane as a squeamish detective who faints at the sight of blood, which makes every gory kill funnier than it has any right to be. It is gothic horror dressed up as a costume party, and nobody wants to leave early. | © Paramount Pictures

The Craft 1996 — 5. The Craft (1996)
Four girls in Catholic school uniforms discover real power, and The Craft treats that like the dangerous thing it is. Robin Tunney's Sarah joins a coven looking for friendship and gets something closer to a warning. The movie never pretends witchcraft solves anything, it just makes the fallout look incredible while it lasts. Watching it now feels like finding an old diary that somehow still applies. | © Sony Pictures

Practical Magic — 4. Practical Magic (1998)
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play sisters cursed to lose any man they fall for, which sounds grim until the movie turns it into something closer to a hangout session. Practical Magic cares more about midnight margaritas and backyard séances than it does about plot logic. The aunts dancing in the kitchen while lightning cracks outside is the whole movie in one scene. It is less a horror story than a reminder that family can absorb almost any curse. | © Warner Bros.

The Addams Family 1991 — 3. The Addams Family (1991)
Morticia and Gomez Addams kiss up each other's arms and somehow make it the most romantic thing in the movie. The Addams Family runs on a simple trick: everything horrifying to normal people is just Tuesday to this family. Wednesday deadpanning her way through summer camp hell is still one of the best performances a kid has ever given. The house is falling apart and full of torture devices, and it remains the coziest place onscreen. | © Paramount Pictures

Beetlejuice — 2. Beetlejuice (1988)
Two dead newlyweds hire a freelance demon to scare off the living, and somehow that premise produces one of the warmest movies about death ever made. Michael Keaton's Betelgeuse is chaos in a striped suit, but the real heart sits with Winona Ryder's Lydia, a goth kid who just wants someone to actually see her. The dinner party possession scene turns horror into full musical theater without losing its edge. Beetlejuice figured out that the afterlife could be funnier than life itself and never looked back. | © Warner Bros.

Cropped Coraline — 1. Coraline (2009)
A small girl crawls through a tiny door and finds a version of her life with the boredom replaced by buttons for eyes. Coraline never flinches from how creepy that trade actually is. Every frame of the stop motion looks handmade in the best way, like someone built an entire nightmare out of felt and patience. It understands that kids already know the difference between love and control, they just need a story brave enough to show it. | © Focus Features
