After Earth — 15. After Earth (2013)
Will Smith produced this one for his son, and you can feel the weight of that intention in every frame. After Earth plays like a fable about legacy and fear, except the delivery is so stiff that Jaden Smith's line readings became the whole conversation. Nobody on screen ever cracks a smile, not even when giant cats are chasing a teenager through alien jungle. The Sea of Trees — 14. The Sea of Trees (2015)
A man flies to Japan's suicide forest planning to end his life, then spends the runtime having spiritual realizations instead. That is the setup for The Sea of Trees, and it treats its own premise like sacred ground. Matthew McConaughey cries, wanders, and monologues about fate with a straight face the whole way through. The film wants profundity so badly that it forgets to earn any of it.

Collateral Beauty — 13. Collateral Beauty (2016)
Grief gets turned into a stage play here, complete with actors hired to literally personify Time, Death, and Love. Collateral Beauty hands Will Smith a dead child to mourn and then surrounds him with a scheme dressed up as therapy. Every scene insists on its own importance, right down to the twist that's supposed to make you weep. Remember Me 2010 — 12. Remember Me (2010)
Robert Pattinson broods through most of Remember Me like he's rehearsing for a funeral that hasn't happened yet. Then the actual ending arrives, tying his character's death to 9/11 in a twist that ambushes the whole movie. The tonal whiplash is staggering, a romance suddenly repurposed as historical tragedy in its final minute. Trees start releasing a toxin that makes people kill themselves, and the response from everyone on screen is pure, unblinking dread. The Happening never once winks at how strange that premise sounds out loud. Mark Wahlberg talks to a plastic plant with the same grave intensity he'd use negotiating a hostage situation. Forks, Washington gets treated like the emotional center of the universe in Twilight. Every glance between Bella and Edward is scored and lit like a funeral, even when the actual conversation is about him not eating her at school. Kristen Stewart plays half her lines through heavy breathing, and Robert Pattinson looks perpetually pained by his own existence. Every frame of Max Payne looks like it was lit for a funeral nobody asked to attend. Mark Wahlberg spends the runtime scowling through snow, hallucinogenic demons, and a conspiracy plot that barely holds together. The source game had the excuse of being a stylized noir parody, but the movie plays every bit of it straight. Nobody in In Time ever cracks a smile, which is strange for a movie built on a premise this goofy. Time is literally money here, counted down on everyone's forearm like a bank balance, yet Justin Timberlake treats every heist as a matter of civilizational importance. Three hours and fifteen minutes is a lot of time to spend watching a love triangle pretend it's a war epic. Pearl Harbor stages one of the deadliest days in American history, then spends most of its runtime on a romance subplot shot like a perfume ad. Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett deliver their lines with the gravity of men reading a eulogy. Tom Hanks spends most of The Da Vinci Code squinting at symbols like the fate of Christianity hinges on his next guess. It kind of does, according to the movie, which treats every anagram and church floor tile like a papal decree. Ron Howard shoots the whole thing with the hushed reverence of a documentary about actual history. Tom Cruise running from a sandstorm should not feel like sitting through a corporate strategy meeting, yet The Mummy found a way. The whole thing existed to launch something called the Dark Universe, a shared monster franchise nobody asked for and everybody could feel being set up in real time. Russell Crowe shows up as Jekyll and Hyde explaining lore like a pitch deck with legs. Philosophy majors got very excited when The Matrix Reloaded introduced the Architect, a character who speaks entirely in paragraphs. He explains the nature of choice and control for what feels like ten straight minutes while Neo just stands there nodding. The freeway chase is genuinely great, which almost makes the rest harder to sit through. Krypton exploding is supposed to be a tragedy, and Man of Steel treats every single scene after it the exact same way. Jesse Eisenberg plays Lex Luthor as a hyperactive tech bro quoting Prometheus, which nobody at the studio apparently questioned. Joker wants to be a character study, a social commentary, and a Scorsese homage all at once, and it says so with every slow zoom.
