Some films ride their reputation for decades without anyone admitting the emperor has no clothes. Here are 15 famous movies that were never as good as their reputation.

15 Video Games That Still Feel Special Years Later
15. Eat Pray Love (2010)
A woman eats her way through Italy, prays her way through India, and finds a rich boyfriend in Bali. That is the actual arc of Eat Pray Love, dressed up as spiritual reinvention. Julia Roberts sells every scene she's given, but the movie mistakes expensive scenery for depth. Self-discovery here comes with a travel budget most people watching could never afford. | © Sony Pictures
14. Suicide Squad (2016)
Nobody involved in Suicide Squad seemed to agree on what movie they were making. Reshoots reportedly chased the tone of the trailers instead of the other way around, and the finished cut feels stitched together from two different scripts. Jared Leto's Joker got a mountain of promotion for maybe eight minutes of screen time. The result made money but pleased almost nobody who watched it. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
13. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Brad Pitt ages backward for nearly three hours, and somehow that's the least strange part of sitting through it. The technical work on his de-aging face is genuinely impressive in isolation. Strip that gimmick away, though, and what's left is a slow, meandering romance that mistakes its own runtime for profundity. A cool premise doesn't automatically add up to a movie worth its two hours and forty-five minutes. | © Paramount Pictures
12. Boyhood (2014)
Twelve years of filming with the same cast is a genuinely wild production story. That timeline became the entire pitch for Boyhood, and it worked, right down to the Oscar buzz. But strip away the novelty of watching a kid physically grow up onscreen and the plot underneath is thin, meandering, and often just people talking in kitchens. The trick was real. The movie built around it wasn't nearly as strong. | © IFC Films
11. Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)
Johnny Depp built Jack Sparrow out of pure improvisation, and it worked so well Disney restructured an entire franchise around him. That's the strange part. Pirates of the Caribbean gets remembered as swashbuckling fun, but the plot is a mess of double crosses nobody can actually track past one viewing. Geoffrey Rush and the cursed-gold setup are the real backbone here, doing quiet work while Sparrow gets all the credit. | © Walt Disney Studios
10. The Harry Potter Franchise (2001-2011)
Eight movies, one franchise, and an awful lot of filler stretched between the good parts. The Harry Potter Franchise spent entire installments on subplots that never mattered past their own runtime, especially in the middle stretch. Kids grew up on it and that loyalty is real, but nostalgia carried a few of these films further than the writing ever did. Take away the Hogwarts theme and some of these are just okay fantasy movies with a great marketing department behind them. | © Warner Bros.
9. Dunkirk (2017)
Silence does a lot of heavy lifting when there's barely any dialogue to fill the space. Dunkirk runs on dread and ticking clocks instead of characters worth remembering, and most of the soldiers on screen blur together by the halfway mark. Christopher Nolan's timeline trick, jumping between land, sea, and air on different clocks, is clever on paper but confusing in the theater. It's an technical exercise dressed up as a war epic, and the emotion never quite catches up to the craft. | © Warner Bros.
8. The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)
Nine hours is a big ask, and not every minute of The Lord of the Rings earns its place. The extended editions in particular pad out scenes that already ran long in theaters, turning patience into a requirement rather than a choice. Frodo spends a shocking amount of the trilogy getting captured, staring at a ring, or being carried by someone else. The scope is real and the effort on screen is obvious, but so is the bloat sitting inside all that ambition. | © New Line Cinema
7. Citizen Kane (1941)
Rosebud is a sled. That reveal has been spoiled so many times that Citizen Kane now plays like a mystery everyone already solved before sitting down. Strip away the film-history homework and what's left is a cold, distant character study that keeps its subject at arm's length for two hours. People call it the greatest movie ever made mostly because they were told to, not because it grabs them the way a movie is supposed to. | © RKO Radio Pictures
6. Casablanca (1942)
Two people say goodbye at an airport, and eighty years of film scholars have never stopped talking about it. Casablanca gets credit for lines that were quoted so often they curdled into cliché long before most viewers ever saw the movie. The romance between Rick and Ilsa moves fast and leans hard on chemistry to cover for a fairly thin plot. Wartime nostalgia and repeated airings built its reputation more than the film itself ever really did. | © Warner Bros.
5. Avatar (2009)
Blue skin, floating mountains, and a plot borrowed straight from stories you already know. Avatar made more money than almost anything in history, and yet try naming a line of dialogue from it. James Cameron built a planet down to the last glowing plant, then filled it with characters thinner than the 3D glasses required to watch them. The technology was the actual star, and technology ages fast. | © 20th Century Studios
4. Forrest Gump (1994)
Tom Hanks runs across three decades of American history and somehow bumps into every major event along the way. That gimmick carried Forrest Gump to Best Picture over Pulp Fiction, which still gets argued about at dinner tables. Sweetness stands in for depth for most of its runtime, and the history lessons feel more like a theme park ride than a real story. Nostalgia did a lot of heavy lifting that the script didn't. | © Paramount Pictures
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Slow is one way to describe 2001: A Space Odyssey. Stanley Kubrick spends the opening twenty minutes on apes grunting around a rock, and some audiences never make it past that stretch. What follows is gorgeous, sure, but also cold enough to keep most viewers at arm's length for two and a half hours. Reverence for the visuals gets confused with actually enjoying the movie far too often. | © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
2. The Shining (1980)
Jack Nicholson loses his mind in a hotel that never seems to end, and horror fans still fight about whether the movie even works as horror. Stephen King famously hated what Kubrick did to his book, and he had a point about the emotional core going missing. The visuals are unforgettable, the pacing is glacial, and the scares rely more on dread than anything that actually happens. Style carried this one further than substance ever did. | © Warner Bros.
1. Pulp Fiction (1994)
Two hitmen talk about burgers before a job, and suddenly every film school in America had a new favorite scene to imitate. Pulp Fiction reshuffled its timeline and made dialogue the whole show, which felt radical back in 1994. Revisit it now and the structure shows its seams, with stretches that exist mainly to sound clever rather than move anything forward. Quentin Tarantino's confidence is real, but confidence and substance aren't the same thing. | © MiramaxSome films ride their reputation for decades without anyone admitting the emperor has no clothes.
