15 Famous TV Episodes That Almost Ruined the Entire Series

1-15

One episode away from disaster.

The One Where Joey Speaks French Friends

15. The One Where Joey Speaks French — Friends (1994-2004)

Ten seasons in, Friends leaned on a French lesson gag, and it barely holds up. Phoebe teaching Joey mangled French should be a two minute bit, not a stretch that eats half the runtime. The joke only works if you find Joey's confidence funnier than his confusion, and by season nine that math stops adding up. It is filler dressed up as a highlight, and the show had already proven it could do better. | © NBC

Chuck Versus the Subway Chuck

14. Chuck Versus the Subway — Chuck (2007-2012)

Sarah shoots Chuck. That single moment in Chuck Versus the Subway turned a spy comedy into something closer to a breakup drama, and not everyone signed up for that shift. The episode leans hard into melodrama right when fans wanted momentum after a cliffhanger season finale. Amnesia plots are a hard sell in any genre, and asking an audience to watch two leads restart from zero tested a lot of goodwill built over three seasons. | © NBC

The Gang Buys a Boat Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia

13. The Gang Buys a Boat — It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-)

A boat should not carry this much weight, but The Gang Buys a Boat tries anyway. Frank and Charlie's obsession with fixing up a wrecked yacht turns into forty minutes of arguing about ownership and dead bodies, which is either the show at its purest or proof it was running low on new ideas. The b-plot with Mac and Dennis barely registers next to the boat chaos. Long time fans split hard on whether this one is a classic bottle episode or a sign the concept was getting thin. | © FX

The Long Goodbye How I Met Your Mother

12. The Long Goodbye — How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014)

Nobody expected the ending of How I Met Your Mother to be decided nine years early, but "The Long Goodbye" hints at exactly that. Ted's mother appears on screen for the first time here, and the choice to reveal her this soon changes how every later season gets watched. Nine years of will they, won't they suddenly had an expiration date stamped on it. That kind of foreshadowing can feel clever in the moment and reckless in hindsight. | © CBS

The Star Dexter

11. The Star — Dexter (2006-2013)

Dexter Morgan gets a girlfriend named Lila in The Star, and the fallout from that relationship nearly derails the season around it. The character absorbs so much screen time that Dexter's own arc gets pushed to the side for weeks. Fans wanted more Trinity Killer, less soap opera detour, and the ratio in this stretch tilted the wrong way. It is the rare case where a single relationship subplot threatened to sink an entire season's momentum. | © Showtime

The Principal and the Pauper The Simpsons

10. The Principal and the Pauper — The Simpsons (1989-present)

Skinner is not Skinner. That is the entire premise of The Principal and the Pauper, an episode so disliked that The Simpsons pretended it never happened. The twist reveals a fake identity swap that undoes years of background jokes for no real payoff. Fans hated it so much that the show mocked its own episode in a later season, which tells you everything about how badly it landed. | © Fox

The Fly Breaking Bad

9. The Fly — Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

Two guys trap a fly in a lab for forty-five minutes, and somehow that becomes one of the most divisive hours Breaking Bad ever made. Walt and Jesse argue, clean, and spiral while barely advancing the plot that fans were desperate to see move. The tension is real, but so is the frustration of a bottle episode landing in the middle of a show built on momentum. It is a swing that either reads as bold restraint or a season stalling out at the worst possible time. | © AMC

Across the Sea Lost

8. Across the Sea — Lost (2004-2010)

Jacob and his brother get an origin story nobody asked for, and Across the Sea spends a full hour explaining mythology that Lost had spent years making mysterious on purpose. A glowing cave, a mother who is not a mother, and a smoke monster backstory replace the show's usual restraint with blunt exposition. Fans who wanted answers got them, then immediately wished they hadn't. Mystery boxes rarely survive being opened this literally. | © ABC

The View from Halfway Down Bo Jack Horseman

7. The View from Halfway Down — BoJack Horseman (2014-2020)

The View from Halfway Down ends with BoJack drowning, and for a while the show lets viewers believe that is exactly what happened. Surreal dinner party visuals blur dream logic with what looks like a final goodbye from every character he has hurt. Some fans praised the risk, calling it the show's rawest hour, while others felt manipulated by a near ending that never had to be real. A finale used as a fake-out is a dangerous trick to pull on people who already love these characters. | © Netflix

Scott Tenorman Must Die South Park

6. Scott Tenorman Must Die — South Park (1997-)

Revenge in South Park usually stays cartoonish, but Cartman feeding Scott Tenorman his own dead parents crosses into territory the show rarely revisits. The chili con carne reveal plays for shock first and comedy second, which split the audience right down the middle. Some call it the sharpest thing Cartman ever did. Others still cannot get past what it actually shows a ten-year-old doing on screen. | © Comedy Central

Connors Wedding Succession

5. Connor's Wedding — Succession (2018-2023)

A phone call in a kitchen changes everything the Roy siblings thought they understood about power. Connor's Wedding buries Logan's death in the middle of an episode about someone else's marriage, refusing to give the moment any ceremony at all. Kendall, Roman, and Shiv process grief in real time, stammering and pacing while the wedding carries on downstairs. HBO built an entire series on cruelty and betrayal, then delivered its rawest hour by simply letting three siblings fall apart on a boat. | © HBO

The Bells Game of Thrones

4. The Bells — Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Daenerys Targaryen spends seven seasons being framed as the person who breaks the wheel. Then The Bells has her burn King's Landing to the ground after the city already surrendered, torching years of setup in about twenty minutes. Fans who tracked her arc as a liberation story watched it collapse into a mad queen twist with almost no room to breathe. HBO had built the most talked-about show on television, and this is the episode that turned that conversation hostile. | © HBO

The Red Wedding in Game of Thrones

3. The Red Wedding — Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Weddings do not usually double as ambushes, but The Red Wedding made sure nobody trusted a peace treaty on this show again. Robb Stark, his pregnant wife, and Catelyn Stark all die within minutes, gutted by a plan hiding in plain sight since the invitation arrived. Grief is not the point here. Shock is, and HBO leaned into that shock so hard that some viewers needed a night to process what they just watched. | © HBO

The Last One The X Files

2. The Last One — The X-Files (1993-2018, 2016-2018)

Ten years after cancellation, The X-Files came back just to hand Mulder and Scully a mythology reset nobody asked for. William, the son they gave up to keep him safe, gets folded into an alien hybrid conspiracy that undercuts every ounce of sacrifice behind that choice. Long stretches of exposition try to patch decades of loose ends into one coherent shape, and mostly they do not fit. Fox aired a finale that treated years of emotional stakes like a plot problem to be solved. | © Fox

Felina Breaking Bad

1. Felina — Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

Walter White gets exactly what he wants, and that is the part some fans never forgave. Felina hands him a clean confession, a rescued fortune for his family, and a death on his own terms in the lab he built his empire around. Nothing about the ending punishes him the way five seasons of destruction seemed to demand. AMC closed out one of its darkest shows with something close to a victory lap, and that choice still splits the room. | © AMC
