Authorities tried to keep these films off screens, but banning them only made audiences want them more. Here are 15 horror movies that were banned but loved by audiences anyway.

15 Video Games That Aged Flawlessly
15. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
A string of copycat attacks in Britain got blamed on a movie, and A Clockwork Orange paid the price. Stanley Kubrick himself asked Warner Bros to pull it from UK release after his family received threats. That withdrawal lasted almost three decades, turning a stylized crime film into forbidden fruit. People smuggled in copies on VHS just to see what the fuss was about. | © Warner Bros.
14. Antichrist (2009)
Lars von Trier has a habit of making festival audiences walk out, and Antichrist might be his most effective version of that trick. A grieving couple retreats to a cabin, and what follows includes genital mutilation shown without flinching. Cannes reportedly gasped in places, then argued about it for days after. Few horror films manage to disturb critics and censors in equal measure. | © IFC Films
13. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Blood barely appears on screen, yet The Texas Chain Saw Massacre still got yanked from shelves in multiple countries. The terror comes from sound design, framing, and that lingering sense something is about to go very wrong. Leatherface's introduction remains one of horror's most efficient gut punches. 12. The Last House on the Left (1972)
Wes Craven made his directing debut with a film so brutal that theaters refused to book it. The Last House on the Left follows a revenge plot that strips away any sense of catharsis, leaving only discomfort. Censors in the UK classified it as a video nasty, and it stayed banned there for years. Some debuts announce a filmmaker's whole career in one go. | © American International Pictures
11. The Exorcist (1973)
Theaters handed out barf bags for The Exorcist, and that wasn't just a marketing stunt. People fainted in the aisles, and some countries banned it outright over the religious imagery alone. A 12-year-old's possession plays out with details that still make projectionists uneasy decades later. Few films managed to make a crucifix feel like a weapon. | © Warner Bros.
10. The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
Found footage works best when it feels unbearably real, and The Poughkeepsie Tapes leaned so hard into that realism people assumed it was an actual recovered case file. MGM shelved the thing for nearly a decade after test audiences reacted with genuine distress rather than the usual horror-crowd enthusiasm. The fake documentary style, mixing VHS grain with interrogation footage, made the violence feel procedural instead of staged. That refusal to blink is exactly why bootleg copies kept circulating long before it ever got a real release. | © MGM
9. The Evil Dead (1981)
A group of friends, a cabin, and a demonic book should sound familiar by now, but The Evil Dead got there first and did it on a budget that barely covered film stock. British censors lumped it in with the so-called video nasties and pulled it from shelves entirely. Sam Raimi's camera tricks made the gore feel inventive rather than gratuitous, which somehow made regulators angrier, not calmer. The ban turned a scrappy low-budget tape into required viewing for an entire generation of horror fans. | © New Line Cinema
8. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Animals actually died on camera, and that single fact buried Cannibal Holocaust under lawsuits for years. Italian authorities seized the film and charged director Ruggero Deodato with obscenity, partly because the realism was so convincing that prosecutors suspected the cast had been murdered on set. He had to produce the actors alive in court just to prove otherwise. Few films have ever blurred the line between simulation and documentation this completely, and the backlash never fully went away. | © United Artists
7. Hostel: Part II (2007)
Eli Roth built Hostel: Part II around the idea that money can buy anything, including the right to torture a stranger for sport. Several countries pulled it from theaters outright, pointing to scenes of mutilation that went further than the original film dared. Lionsgate still released it wide in the US, betting correctly that outrage sells tickets just as well as praise does. The sequel ended up more talked about for what got cut than for what actually stayed in the final print. | © Lionsgate
6. Land of the Dead (2005)
George A. Romero returned to the undead with a bigger budget and a sharper target, aiming Land of the Dead straight at class division. Some markets restricted it hard, citing graphic dismemberment that pushed past what ratings boards were comfortable stamping for wide release. The zombies here learn, organize, and eventually fight back against the rich hiding behind walls. That idea unsettled people more than the gore did, even if the gore is what got cited on paper. | © Universal Pictures
5. The Devils (1971)
Ken Russell handed Warner Bros. a film they barely knew how to release. The Devils throws nuns into convulsions of sexual hysteria while a priest gets burned alive for heresy, and the Vatican noticed immediately. Entire countries cut the convent orgy sequence down to nothing, and the uncut version stayed locked away for decades. Few films have made a studio this nervous about its own release. | © Warner Bros.
4. Slender Man (2018)
A teenage internet myth turned into a real-world stabbing case before this movie even opened. Slender Man arrived in 2018 carrying that weight, and several theaters quietly dropped it rather than deal with the headlines. The film itself plays it fairly restrained, more mood than gore, which made the real-life connection feel even stranger. Sony released it anyway, into a controversy it never actually created. | © Sony Pictures
3. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)
Revenge horror rarely gets uglier than what happens in I Spit on Your Grave. A woman survives a prolonged assault, then spends the back half of the film hunting down every man responsible. Roger Ebert called it something close to sadistic propaganda, and several countries agreed enough to ban it outright. Decades later it still gets pulled from shelves somewhere every few years. | © Cinemagic Pictures
2. Maniac (1980)
William Lustig did not make a slasher movie built for comfort. Maniac follows a killer who scalps his victims and talks to their mannequins like they're still alive. The MPAA refused it an R rating outright, forcing an unrated release that horrified critics walked out of mid-screening. Gene Siskel reportedly listed its license plate on air just to warn people away from it. | © Analysis Film Releasing Corporation
1. Saw III (2006)
By the third entry, the Saw franchise had stopped pretending restraint mattered. Angus Scrimm's traps got more elaborate and the camera stopped cutting away from the damage they caused. Several countries demanded cuts before release, and Lionsgate's own marketing leaned hard into exactly what got censored elsewhere. The torture got the complaints, but the box office numbers did all the talking. | © LionsgateAuthorities tried to keep these films off screens, but banning them only made audiences want them more.
