Cropped the toxic avenger 1984 — 15. The Toxic Avenger (1984)
Troma built its entire brand on The Toxic Avenger, a 1984 movie about a mop-closet janitor turned mutant hero after falling into a vat of waste. Lloyd Kaufman shot it for around $500,000 and let the gore do the talking. The creature suit alone took hours to apply each day. It's still the closest thing the studio has to a mascot. | © Troma Entertainment

Re Animator — 14. Re-Animator (1985)
A man carries his own severed head through most of the final act of Re-Animator, and somehow that's not the strangest scene in it. Stuart Gordon directed this 1985 loose riff on H.P. Lovecraft's "Herbert West-Reanimator" for about $900,000. Jeffrey Combs plays the glowing-green-serum scientist with a straight face that makes the chaos funnier. Empire Pictures released it uncut only after dropping it from an R rating fight. | © Empire Pictures

Black Christmas 1974 cropped processed by imagy — 13. Black Christmas (1974)
Bob Clark directed Black Christmas in 1974, three years before he made the Christmas classic on the opposite end of the tone spectrum. The killer's point-of-view opening and the phone calls coming from inside the house became templates that slasher movies leaned on for decades. Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder lead a sorority house that nobody thinks to evacuate. John Carpenter has said the film influenced his approach to Halloween four years later. | © Warner Bros.

The Thing 1982 — 12. The Thing (1982)
Fifteen million dollars bought John Carpenter a research station in Antarctica and a creature that nobody could trust. The Thing came out in 1982, the same summer as E.T., and got buried at the box office for it. Rob Bottin's practical effects team built the chest-splitting and head-spider scenes with foam latex and sheer patience. Audiences rejected it on release, but it's since become the standard against which other remakes measure themselves. | © Universal Pictures

The Last Exorcism — 11. The Last Exorcism (2010)
Found footage was already worn out by 2010, yet The Last Exorcism found a new angle inside it. Daniel Stamm directed the film for about $1.8 million, framing it as a documentary crew following a disillusioned preacher named Cotton Marcus. Patrick Fabian plays Marcus as a man who no longer believes his own act, which makes the ending land harder. The film opened at number one and made back its budget many times over in its first weekend alone. | © Lionsgate

The return of the living dead msn — 10. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Dan O'Bannon wrote and directed The Return of the Living Dead after a legal dispute split the rights to the word "zombie" between two separate movie franchises. His zombies talk, run, and specifically crave brains, a detail this 1985 film invented and every later zombie story borrowed. The budget sat around four million, high for this list but modest next to the makeup work it demanded. Linnea Quigley's graveyard dance scene remains the single image most people associate with the movie. | © Orion Pictures

Friday the 13th — 9. Friday the 13th (1980)
Camp Crystal Lake almost didn't have a killer behind the mask at all, since early drafts of Friday the 13th kept the murderer's identity vague until shooting began. Sean Cunningham made the film for about 550,000 dollars in 1980, chasing the success he'd seen in Halloween two years earlier. Tom Savini, who'd worked on Dawn of the Dead, built the gore effects that got the film banned in parts of the UK. It grossed close to 40 million domestically off that tiny budget. | © Paramount Pictures

Saw — 8. Saw (2004)
A man wakes up chained to a pipe in a filthy bathroom, and that single room is most of what James Wan had money for. Saw cost 1.2 million dollars in 2004, shot in eighteen days inside an actual warehouse in Los Angeles. Leigh Whannell wrote the script and also played Adam, partly because paying another actor wasn't in the budget. The film ended up grossing over 100 million worldwide and spawned a franchise still releasing new entries two decades later. | © Lionsgate

Cropped Paranormal Activity — 7. Paranormal Activity (2007)
Fifteen thousand dollars is less than some student films cost, yet that's what Oren Peli spent making Paranormal Activity in his own San Diego house. He shot it on consumer cameras in 2007, using his actual bedroom as the set and his own furniture as props. Steven Spielberg reportedly watched a screener and suggested the ending be reshot, which Peli did. Paramount bought the film and it eventually made back its budget nearly 13,000 times over. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped The Blair Witch Project — 6. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Three film students vanish in the Maryland woods, or so the marketing for The Blair Witch Project insisted long before anyone saw the footage. Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez built an entire fake missing-persons website in 1999, years before that kind of viral campaign was common. The actors shot most of it themselves on a handheld camera, improvising from a 35-page outline rather than a script. Made for roughly 60,000 dollars, it pulled in nearly 250 million at the box office worldwide. | © Artisan Entertainment

The Evil Dead — 5. The Evil Dead (1981)
Sam Raimi was 21 when he shot The Evil Dead in a condemned farmhouse in Morristown, Tennessee. The crew froze through winter nights with no heat and a budget of 375,000 dollars raised partly from local dentists and doctors. Bruce Campbell's Ash got dragged through mud, glass, and fake blood made from syrup for weeks on end. Stephen King later called it "the most ferociously original horror film of the year." | © New Line Cinema

Cropped the texas chain saw massacre 1974 — 4. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Leatherface's chainsaw barely worked during filming, which is why Gunnar Hansen struggles to start it onscreen. Tobe Hooper shot the whole thing in the brutal Texas summer of 1973 on a budget near 140,000 dollars. Actors wore the same clothes for weeks because there was no money for a wardrobe department. The dinner table scene alone reportedly took 27 hours to film. | © Bryanston Distributing / MGM (current rights)

Night of the Living Dead — 3. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
George Romero financed Night of the Living Dead with money raised from his own Pittsburgh ad agency, Image Ten. He shot it in black and white on a 114,000 dollar budget, partly because color film was too expensive. Duane Jones was cast as the lead without his race ever being written into the script. The film played as a midnight movie for years before anyone called it a classic. | © Continental Distributing (original) / The Criterion Collection (home video)

Terrifier 2016 — 2. Terrifier (2016)
Art the Clown doesn't speak a single word through all of Terrifier, and somehow that makes him worse. Damien Leff financed the film for around 35,000 dollars, growing out of director Damien Leone's earlier short films. David Howard Thornton took the role after the original actor dropped out shortly before shooting. One theater reportedly handed out barf bags during a later screening of its sequel. | © Dread Central Presents / Cinedigm

Halloween — 1. Halloween (1978)
John Carpenter scored Halloween himself in about three days, using a simple piano theme in 5/4 time. The film cost 325,000 dollars and was shot in 20 days around Los Angeles neighborhoods dressed up as Illinois. Debra Hill co-wrote the script and helped shape Laurie Strode into something more than a typical scream queen. Michael Myers's mask was a modified Captain Kirk mold bought for less than two dollars. | © Compass International Pictures / Universal Pictures (current rights)
