Baywatch — 15. Baywatch (1989-2001)
NBC canceled Baywatch after just one season in 1989, convinced the lifeguard drama wasn't worth the cost of shooting on the beach. Producers Douglas Schwartz and Gregory Bonann kept it alive by funding a syndicated revival themselves. That gamble turned into a global hit watched in over 140 countries at its peak. Desperate Housewives — 14. Desperate Housewives (2004-2012)
Marc Cherry wrote Desperate Housewives after watching news coverage of Andrea Yates, the Texas mother who drowned her five children in 2001. He wondered what kind of desperation could push a suburban mom that far, and every network he pitched it to passed. ABC finally picked it up in 2004, and the pilot pulled in over 21 million viewers. CSI Crime Scene Investigation — 13. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015)
A crime procedural about forensic science sounded like a hard sell to network executives in the late 1990s. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation almost died in development because CBS worried the science would bore people rather than hook them. South Park — 12. South Park (1997-)
Two guys with construction paper and a camcorder made a short called "The Spirit of Christmas" in 1995, never expecting a network deal out of it. Trey Parker and Matt Stone's crude tape passed hand to hand until a Fox executive's copy leaked and got them noticed. The Queens Gambit — 11. The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Walter Tevis published his novel about a chess prodigy in 1983, and Hollywood spent the next three decades failing to turn it into anything. Heath Ledger held the rights at one point and was set to direct before his death in 2008 stalled it again. Scott Frank finally got The Queen's Gambit made for Netflix in 2020, casting Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon. Squid Game — 10. Squid Game (2021-2025)
Hwang Dong-hyuk finished the script for Squid Game back in 2009 and spent a decade shopping it around. Every studio in South Korea turned it down, calling the story too violent and too strange for an audience to follow. He aged ten years faster than normal during that stretch, or so he joked later, and sold a laptop to cover bills. The Walking Dead — 9. The Walking Dead (2010-2022)
Frank Darabont pitched The Walking Dead to AMC using a budget that horror executives assumed would balloon out of control. Robert Kirkman's comic had already run for years, but no network wanted a zombie show carrying a prestige-drama budget. AMC greenlit it anyway in 2010, with a first season of just six episodes to limit the risk. Ratings for the finale beat every scripted show on cable that year. | © AMC

Zendaya buffy the vampire slayer — 8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
A theatrical flop came first. The 1992 film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer underperformed so badly that Joss Whedon distanced himself from it entirely, calling the final product a mess of studio interference. He got the rights back years later and pitched the TV version to networks that mostly passed. Seinfeld — 7. Seinfeld (1989-1998)
NBC executives watched the pilot for Seinfeld in 1989 and scored it among the lowest test results in the network's history. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld had built an episode about two guys planning what to say to a producer, and testers found it went nowhere. Rick Ludwin, an NBC executive with unused budget from late-night, quietly funded four more episodes out of his own department's money. The Sopranos — 6. The Sopranos (1999-2007)
David Chase originally wrote The Sopranos as a movie script before shifting it into a pilot for Fox. Fox read the material about a mob boss in therapy and rejected it outright, unsure who would watch it. HBO picked it up instead in 1997, giving Chase room to make Tony Soprano's panic attacks the emotional center rather than a punchline. It premiered in January 1999 and ran for six seasons. | © HBO

Friends — 5. Friends (1994-2004)
Six unknowns with no clear lead were the problem NBC kept circling back to. The original pilot script for Friends was called "Insomnia Cafe" and tested worse than average with focus groups. Executives specifically flagged Chandler as "too gay" and Joey as "too dumb" in notes on the pitch. Chuck Lorre's first attempt at The Big Bang Theory starred a stripper named Katie living across the hall from two physicists. CBS shot the pilot in 2006 and audiences hated it, calling the tone mean rather than funny. Lorre and co-creator Bill Prady scrapped the entire cast except Leonard and Sheldon and started over. Kaley Cuoco joined as Penny in the reworked version, and CBS finally ordered the series in 2007. | © CBS

Game of Thrones — 3. Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
HBO's research department reportedly told executives that fantasy series don't perform well with a mainstream audience. George R.R. Martin's books were already considered unfilmable at the scale the story demanded, with dragons, armies, and a body count no network wanted to budget for. The pilot HBO shot in 2009 was so poorly received internally that nearly the entire thing got reshot with new directors and a recast Daenerys. David Benioff and D.B. Every major network passed on Breaking Bad before AMC picked it up, and even AMC almost didn't. Sony Pictures Television shopped the script for years before AMC, a channel with no original drama at the time, took the risk in 2008. The Duffer Brothers pitched Stranger Things to roughly fifteen networks before Netflix said yes in 2015. Most passed because the show read as neither a kids' story nor an adult one, sitting in a gap nobody wanted to program. Fox and other outlets turned down the project outright, unconvinced a supernatural throwback to the 1980s would find an audience.
