1-15

Happy accidents, iconic moments.

Cropped The Other Guys

15. The Other Guys (2010)

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg riff on TLC's "Waterfalls" in The Other Guys, and almost none of it was scripted. The bit started as a throwaway line on set and the two actors just kept building on it between takes. Director Adam McKay liked it enough to leave the camera rolling and cut the exchange into the final film. Sony released it in 2010, and the joke now gets quoted more than most of the actual plot. | © Sony Pictures
Cropped being john malkovich 1999

14. Being John Malkovich (1999)

An extra on Being John Malkovich was supposed to walk past calmly during a street scene, but he threw a soda can instead. Nobody told him to do it. Spike Jonze kept the moment in the 1999 film because it matched the off balance tone he was already going for. USA Films picked up the release, and that one unplanned toss became part of the texture of the movie. | © USA Films
Cropped The Hateful Eight

13. The Hateful Eight (2015)

Kurt Russell's vintage guitar, borrowed from a museum, gets smashed over Jennifer Jason Leigh's head in The Hateful Eight. The instrument was a genuine 1870s Martin, reportedly worth close to 40,000 dollars, and it was not supposed to be the one used for the stunt. A prop replica had been built, but it got mixed up on set and the real guitar ended up in the shot. Quentin Tarantino kept the take because Leigh's reaction was real and the Weinstein Company released the film in 2015 exactly as filmed. | © The Weinstein Company
Rain Man

12. Rain Man (1988)

Dustin Hoffman broke wind during a scene in Rain Man and Tom Cruise could not keep a straight face. The moment was not written anywhere in Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass's script. Director Barry Levinson left the cameras running because Cruise's genuine laughter fit the brothers' dynamic better than anything blocked out. United Artists released the film in 1988, and it went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture that year. | © United Artists
Cropped the princess bride

11. The Princess Bride (1987)

Cary Elwes lost consciousness for real while filming a fight scene in The Princess Bride. Christopher Guest, playing Count Rugen, hit him with the hilt of a sword slightly too hard during rehearsal. Elwes has said in interviews that he came to on the ground with the crew staring down at him. Rob Reiner's 1987 film, released by 20th Century Fox, kept its reputation as one of the more quotable adventures of the decade. | © 20th Century Fox
A Knights Tale

10. A Knight's Tale (2001)

Medieval crowds don't naturally know when to cheer on command, which is exactly the problem Brian Helgeland ran into filming the jousting scenes. The extras kept missing their cue during a key tournament moment in A Knight's Tale, so the crew had them clap along to Queen's "We Will Rock You" instead. The anachronism worked so well it stayed in the final cut. Columbia Pictures released the film in 2001 with a classic rock soundtrack as a direct result. | © Columbia Pictures
Cropped die hard

9. Die Hard (1988)

Alan Rickman wanted his fall from Nakatomi Plaza to look genuinely startled, so the crew gave him a real surprise. He was dropped slightly earlier than the count he'd been told to expect. His expression in Die Hard is the actual reaction of a man who didn't see it coming. Twentieth Century Fox released the film in 1988, and that single frame still gets freeze-framed decades later. | © Twentieth Century Fox
The Godfather

8. The Godfather (1972)

A stray cat wandered onto the set during Marlon Brando's first scene as Vito Corleone, and nobody planned for it. Francis Ford Coppola let the animal stay, and Brando simply started stroking it while he delivered his lines. The purring on the soundtrack wasn't added later, it came straight from the cat drowning out parts of the dialogue. Paramount Pictures released The Godfather in 1972 with the unscripted animal intact. | © Paramount Pictures
Cropped annie hall 1977

7. Annie Hall (1977)

Diane Keaton's sneeze during the cocaine scene in Annie Hall wasn't written into Woody Allen's script. The take scattered the prop powder across the table, and Keaton's reaction stayed in because it got a real laugh. United Artists released the film in 1977, the same year it went on to win Best Picture. One unplanned sneeze outlasted most of the dialogue people actually remember writing. | © United Artists
The Usual Suspects 1995

6. The Usual Suspects (1995)

Laughter ruined so many takes on The Usual Suspects that Bryan Singer had to work around his own cast. The lineup scene, where the suspects stand together cracking jokes off camera, became a problem because the actors genuinely couldn't keep straight faces. Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, and the others kept breaking character between setups. Gramercy Pictures released the film in 1995, and the chaos behind that scene never made it into the subtitles. | © Gramercy Pictures
Guardians Of The Galaxy

5. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Chris Pratt wasn't supposed to fumble the orb when Peter Quill first grabs it in Guardians of the Galaxy. His hand slipped during the take, he bobbled it, and James Gunn kept the camera rolling anyway. The stumble reads as a character trait now, like Quill is barely holding his own cool together. Marvel Studios released the film in 2014 with the accident built into the final cut. | © Walt Disney Studios / Marvel Studios
Django Unchained

4. Django Unchained (2012)

Leonardo DiCaprio sliced his hand open on a real glass during the dinner table rant in Django Unchained, and he kept performing through the pain. Blood runs down his fingers as he keeps talking, and nobody called cut. Quentin Tarantino used the footage because the shock on the other actors' faces was genuine. The Weinstein Company released the film in 2012 with the injury left in plain sight. | © The Weinstein Company
Cropped The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers

3. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Viggo Mortensen actually broke two toes kicking a helmet during a take on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. He screamed in real pain, not performed rage, and Peter Jackson left it in the movie. Aragorn's agony over a fallen comrade is, in a literal sense, Mortensen nursing fractured bones on camera. New Line Cinema released the film in 2002 without reshooting the moment. | © New Line Cinema
Midnight Cowboy 1969

2. Midnight Cowboy (1969)

A yellow cab nearly ran down Dustin Hoffman on a Manhattan street while cameras rolled for Midnight Cowboy. The crew hadn't blocked traffic for the shot, and the near miss was completely real. Hoffman stayed in character and snapped the now famous line about being a pedestrian at the taxi instead of breaking the scene. United Artists released the film in 1969, keeping the unplanned near accident in the final print. | © United Artists
Raiders of the Lost Ark

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Egyptian food and water left Harrison Ford badly sick with dysentery during the Cairo shoot of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Too weak to perform the planned sword fight against a skilled swordsman, Ford suggested to Steven Spielberg that Indiana Jones just shoot the guy instead. The whole exchange took seconds to film and became one of the most quoted gags in the franchise. Paramount Pictures released the film in 1981 with the shortcut intact. | © Paramount Pictures
