15 Movie Sequels Nobody Asked For That Turned Out Surprisingly Great

1-15

Nobody wanted it, everyone loved it.

TV Shows & Movies - November 1st 2026, 15:00 GMT+1
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

15. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Sean Connery showing up as Henry Jones Sr. could have been a gimmick, and instead it became the whole heart of the movie. Watching him and Harrison Ford bicker through Nazi checkpoints like a father annoyed his son never calls is funnier than any third sequel has a right to be. The Holy Grail quest takes a backseat to a dad critiquing his son's parking. Thirty years later it still gets brought up as the one that matched the original. | © Paramount Pictures
Bill Ted Face the Music

14. Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

Nobody was clamoring for a third Bill & Ted movie nearly thirty years after the second one. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter walked back into these roles like no time passed, playing two middle-aged dads still trying to write the song that saves the universe. The movie knows exactly how silly that premise is and leans into it with total sincerity instead of winking at the camera. It turns out growing older never killed the goofiness, it just gave it better timing. | © Orion Pictures
T2 Trainspotting

13. T2 Trainspotting (2017)

Twenty years after the first film, Renton runs back into Begbie, Spud, and Sick Boy, and none of them have moved on the way they promised they would. Danny Boyle doesn't try to recreate the chaos of the original, he lets these guys sit in regret instead. There's a scene where Renton updates his old "Choose Life" speech for a world of social media and ironic detachment, and it stings more than it should. Coming back to characters you loved and finding them older, sadder, and still somehow themselves is a rare thing to pull off. | © TriStar Pictures
Cropped Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle

12. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

Four teenagers get sucked into a video game and come out the other side as Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. That swap is the entire joke, and it never stops working because the cast commits so hard to playing teenagers trapped in adult bodies. Jack Black doing a popular mean girl through a middle aged man's face is funnier every time it happens. A premise this disposable had no business being this much fun. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
Bad Boys for Life

11. Bad Boys for Life (2020)

Twenty-five years after the first Bad Boys, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence still have the same chemistry that made Mike and Marcus worth watching in the first place. Marcus wanting to retire and Mike refusing to slow down gives their bickering actual weight this time, not just banter for its own sake. The action is bigger and louder, but it's the two of them yelling at each other mid-shootout that carries the movie. Some partnerships just don't age out of being fun to watch. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
Cropped The Suicide Squad

10. The Suicide Squad (2021)

A talking shark who quotes philosophy and cries about loneliness has no business working, but Polka-Dot Man and King Shark steal the whole movie. James Gunn ditched the grim tone of the 2016 version and just let the weirdness breathe. There's a sincerity buried under all the gore, especially in how it treats its D-list rejects like actual people with actual wounds. The Suicide Squad earns its chaos instead of hiding behind it. | © Warner Bros.
22 Jump Street

9. 22 Jump Street (2014)

Nobody expected a comedy about recycling its own premise to work twice, let alone better the second time. 22 Jump Street spends half its runtime mocking the idea of sequels while being a genuinely great one, which should feel like cheating. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill's chemistry only got sharper, especially once Tatum discovers Benjamin's and treats it like Mensa. The end credits alone, with twenty fake sequels crammed into two minutes, show more comedic ambition than most studios put into an entire franchise. | © Sony Pictures / Columbia Pictures
The Lego Movie 2

8. The Lego Movie 2 (2019)

Everything was supposed to be awesome again, and somehow it was. The Lego Movie 2 turns its sequel structure into a metaphor for sibling rivalry, hiding real family tension under all the plastic bricks and musical numbers. Emmet's shift into a gruff action hero works as both parody and genuine character growth. Few animated sequels manage to be this funny while quietly being about something. | © Warner Bros.
Creed

7. Creed (2015)

Rocky Balboa sitting in a dim gym, agreeing to train the son of the man he fought decades ago, carries more weight than any punch thrown in the movie. Michael B. Jordan plays Adonis Creed with a chip on his shoulder that never feels manufactured. Ryan Coogler shoots the boxing like a boxer actually feels it, all sweat and breath and dread between rounds. Creed doesn't ride on nostalgia so much as earn its place next to it. | © Warner Bros.
Doctor Sleep

6. Doctor Sleep (2019)

Stephen King famously hated Kubrick's The Shining, so adapting its sequel novel into a film that honors both felt impossible. Doctor Sleep pulls it off by letting Ewan McGregor carry decades of damage as the grown-up Danny Torrance. The return to the Overlook Hotel in the finale could've been empty fan service, but it plays more like a reckoning. Mike Flanagan threaded an impossible needle and somehow nobody got hurt. | © Warner Bros.
Prey

5. Prey (2022)

A Comanche woman hunting a nearly invisible alien is not the pitch anyone expected from the Predator franchise. Amber Midthunder plays Naru as someone constantly underestimated, which turns out to be the smartest possible angle for this story. The jungle tactics, the final showdown in the mud, the quiet confidence in her own instincts, all of it lands harder than another round of commandos with big guns. Twenty years from now people will still point to this as proof the formula had more room left in it than anyone assumed. | © Hulu
Mad Max Fury Road

4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Thirty years after the last one, somebody handed George Miller a budget and he built an entire movie out of a single highway chase. Mad Max: Fury Road barely pauses for dialogue because it doesn't need any, the trucks and the war rig and Furiosa's missing arm tell you everything. Charlize Theron ends up carrying as much weight as Tom Hardy, maybe more. Few action movies ever commit to pure momentum this hard and come out the other side still coherent. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Puss in Boots The Last Wish

3. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

An aging cat who's burned through eight of his nine lives sounds like a sad premise for a kids movie, but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish leans straight into that fear. The Wolf, who hunts Puss down like death with a bounty poster, turns a cartoon sequel into something genuinely tense. Its animation shifts speed and style to match whatever emotion is on screen instead of just looking polished. Somehow a franchise everyone had written off became the one making grown adults think about mortality. | © Universal Pictures
Blade Runner 2049

2. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Thirty years is a long gap to fill, and Blade Runner 2049 fills it by slowing everything down instead of rushing to catch up. Ryan Gosling's K spends the movie chasing an identity that might not even belong to him, through orange dust storms and empty casinos and a hologram girlfriend who can't quite touch him. Roger Deakins shoots loneliness like it has a color palette all its own. It's a sequel that trusts silence as much as the original did, and somehow makes that trust pay off. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Top Gun Maverick

1. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Thirty-six years since the first one, and Pete Mitchell still hasn't learned to stay out of a cockpit. Top Gun: Maverick could have coasted on callbacks alone, but instead it builds an entire third act around a mission so tense you forget to check the runtime. Tom Cruise insisted on practical flying instead of green screen, and you can feel that choice in every stomach-drop turn. The volleyball scene's gone, replaced by something better: a movie that actually earns the chills it's going for. | © Paramount Pictures

Some sequels arrive to eye-rolls and skepticism and then quietly win everyone over, delivering something far better than the cynics expected. Here are 15 movie sequels nobody asked for that turned out surprisingly great.
