15 Movies That Could Never Be Made Today

1-15

Revenge of the Nerds

15. Revenge of the Nerds (1984)

Rooting for the underdogs gets complicated when their revenge involves secretly filming women undressing. Revenge of the Nerds asks us to celebrate its campus outcasts while treating sexual violations as ingenious victories, including Lewis impersonating a woman’s boyfriend to sleep with her. The jocks are awful, certainly, but that hardly makes the opposition heroic. A comedy about bullied students fighting back still works; this particular definition of winning needs considerably more than a fresh wardrobe. | © 20th Century Fox

Miss Congeniality

14. Miss Congeniality (2000)

Sandra Bullock being treated as a hideous creature until someone straightens her hair remains an impressive feat of Hollywood make-believe. Miss Congeniality sends FBI agent Gracie Hart undercover at a beauty pageant, with extensive grooming presented as both professional preparation and personal improvement. Yet her growing respect for the contestants gives the comedy a warmer, less dismissive streak. The makeover jokes invite revision; the friendships suggest a film rather smarter than its tweezers-first sales pitch. | © Castle Rock Entertainment

Cropped Brooke Shields The Blue Lagoon

13. The Blue Lagoon (1980)

Postcard scenery does a remarkable amount of heavy lifting in The Blue Lagoon. Beneath the palm trees sits a coming-of-age romance built around two young castaways discovering sex without adults around to explain anything. Brooke Shields was only fourteen during filming, with a body double used for nude material. That distinction matters, but so does the film’s presentation of its young star: paradise comes packaged with a gaze that makes the supposed innocence difficult to buy. | © Columbia Pictures

The Gods Must be Crazy

12. The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)

A discarded Coke bottle causes more trouble than most movie villains in The Gods Must Be Crazy. Its arrival disrupts a San community, sending Xi on a journey to dispose of the mysterious object. Jamie Uys builds inventive slapstick around that premise, but the mock-documentary narration presents the community as innocents existing outside modern history. The comedy’s affection is clear; its paternalism is harder to shake. Who gets to explain these people becomes as interesting as the bottle. | © C.A.T. Films

Tropic Thunder

11. Tropic Thunder (2008)

Kirk Lazarus believes changing his skin color proves his dedication to acting. The joke in Tropic Thunder is that he’s a grotesquely self-important fool, with Robert Downey Jr. playing an Australian actor performing in blackface. Ben Stiller’s Hollywood satire depends on that distinction, while its disability-related material drew protests upon release. Selling such a deliberately combustible comedy would require explaining its targets carefully—and accepting that understanding a joke doesn’t oblige anyone to find it funny. | © DreamWorks Pictures

Blank Check

10. Blank Check (1994)

For most of Blank Check, the questionable decisions concern how an eleven-year-old spends a million dollars. Then an adult FBI agent kisses him on the lips, and the extravagant shopping spree suddenly seems responsible. Disney’s wish-fulfillment comedy treats Preston’s attraction to Shay as a cute subplot, allowing the adult to reciprocate instead of establishing a boundary. Buying a mansion is the fantasy we signed up for; this romantic reward feels imported from a very different movie. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Blues Brothers

9. The Blues Brothers (1980)

Put Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Ray Charles in a musical, then spend a fortune smashing cars between songs: The Blues Brothers has gloriously peculiar priorities. John Landis’s production sent vehicles through a real shopping mall and staged elaborate chases across Chicago. The collisions have weight, mess, and an extravagance perfectly matched to Jake and Elwood’s absurd mission. Repeating that formula would mean finding someone willing to finance both a soul revue and its enormous repair bill. | © Universal Pictures

Sixteen Candles

8. Sixteen Candles (1984)

John Hughes remembers exactly how much a forgotten birthday can hurt. His sensitivity becomes considerably less reliable when Sixteen Candles leaves Samantha and checks on everyone else. Long Duk Dong gets racial caricature, while the drunken Caroline is passed from Jake to Ted as though her wishes are irrelevant. Those scenes sit awkwardly beside Molly Ringwald’s beautifully observed teenage embarrassment. The romantic ending still has its admirers, but getting there requires overlooking people the screenplay barely bothers to protect. | © Universal Pictures

Requiem for a dream msn

7. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Ellen Burstyn’s Sara Goldfarb only wants to fit into her red dress and appear on television. Darren Aronofsky makes that modest wish as devastating as the younger characters’ drug-fueled ambitions in Requiem for a Dream. Frantic editing turns their routines into traps, leaving almost no room to recover between disasters. Released unrated after an unsuccessful NC-17 appeal, this is an exceptionally punishing proposition for a distributor: a superbly acted film whose strongest recommendation might also sound like a warning. | © Protozoa Pictures

Airplane

6. Airplane! (1980)

The captain’s conversation with a visiting little boy is considerably less wholesome than the airline’s hospitality policy presumably intended. Airplane! delivers those inappropriate questions with the same straight face it brings to inflatable pilots and catastrophic meal service. That refusal to acknowledge the absurdity makes its comedy work, though some sexual and racial material invites a wince alongside the laugh. Rewriting individual gags would be straightforward; reproducing the cast’s absolute commitment to such magnificent stupidity is the harder assignment. | © Paramount Pictures

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

5. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny sharing a scene looks effortless when you’re a child. As an adult, you start imagining the contracts. Steven Spielberg helped negotiate the competing studios’ participation in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, while Richard Williams’s animation team made drawn characters convincingly occupy Bob Hoskins’s physical world. Add a murder mystery, a seductive cartoon chanteuse, and some childhood-scarring menace, and the achievement becomes wonderfully improbable. Even its corporate cooperation feels like a special effect. | © Touchstone Pictures

Fitzcarraldo

4. Fitzcarraldo (1982)

Werner Herzog apparently considered dragging a real steamship over a hill a reasonable filmmaking decision. For Fitzcarraldo, the vessel weighed roughly 320 tons, turning a story about an obsessive would-be opera impresario into an equally obsessive physical undertaking. The accompanying documentary, Burden of Dreams, records the production’s extraordinary difficulties. Watching that ship move is breathtaking because the weight is real. Admiring the image and wondering whether anyone should have attempted it are entirely compatible responses. | © Werner Herzog Filmproduktion

Cannibal Ferox

3. Cannibal Ferox (1981)

Rubber organs and stage blood aren’t the problem here. Umberto Lenzi’s Cannibal Ferox combines fabricated human atrocities with actual animal cruelty, making its reputation inseparable from suffering that happened for the camera. Its jungle expedition also relies on sensationalized images of Indigenous people, even as the story exposes outsiders’ brutality. Extreme horror can still disgust an audience through convincing effects. The real animal deaths contribute nothing that justifies them, however enthusiastically the advertising sells the film’s notoriety. | © Dania Film

Lawrence of Arabia

2. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

The desert in Lawrence of Arabia refuses to behave like background scenery: it dwarfs people, exhausts them, and swallows the frame. David Lean’s epic earns its monumental scale through location photography and an unusually patient sense of spectacle. Its casting carries a different legacy, with Alec Guinness and Anthony Quinn playing Arab leaders alongside Egyptian star Omar Sharif. Another adaptation could preserve the ambition while reconsidering those choices. The photography deserves imitation; the casting deserves a fresh approach. | © Columbia Pictures

Blame It On Rio

1. Blame It On Rio (1984)

Michael Caine can sell a great deal with an embarrassed expression. Asking him to make an affair with his best friend’s teenage daughter charming, however, is quite an assignment. Blame It on Rio approaches the relationship as a vacation farce, finding comic complications in concealment and discovery. The adult man’s discomfort receives more indulgence than his judgment deserves. Tropical scenery and bedroom-comedy mechanics keep urging everyone to relax, while the premise supplies increasingly persuasive reasons not to. | © Sherwood Productions

1-15

Watch an old favorite with someone who’s never seen it, and you might find yourself doing a little explaining. The joke you forgot about. The casting choice. The scene that makes you wonder who signed off on the budget—or the insurance. These 15 movies would face a very different pitch meeting today, whether because of changing tastes, dangerous productions, or Hollywood’s reluctance to bankroll something that strange. Some deserve another chance. Others might need a rewrite.
