15 Movies That Were Much Stranger Than Their Trailers Suggested

1-15

Not what it looked like.

Downsizing 2017

15. Downsizing (2017)

Matt Damon shrinks himself to five inches tall in Downsizing, and the movie spends its first act as a clever satire about consumerism. Alexander Payne wrote the script over years, originally imagining it as a much longer story spanning decades. Then the plot veers into class politics, a Norwegian doomsday colony, and an actual apocalypse subplot. The trailer sold a comedy about tiny houses and never mentioned the end of the world. | © Paramount Pictures
Cropped A Cure for Wellness

14. A Cure for Wellness (2016)

A young executive gets sent to retrieve his company's CEO from a wellness spa in the Swiss Alps, and that's the last normal thing about A Cure for Wellness. Gore Verbinski shot the film for a reported budget near 40 million dollars, most of it visible in the drowning imagery alone. Eels show up. So does a dental drill scene that made festival audiences audibly react before the story even gets to its buried asylum backstory. | © 20th Century Fox
The Voices

13. The Voices (2014)

Ryan Reynolds plays a factory worker whose dog and cat talk to him, one encouraging kindness and the other pushing murder. The Voices premiered at Sundance in 2014 under Marjane Satrapi's direction, the same filmmaker behind Persepolis. The color palette stays bright and sitcom-cheerful even as severed heads pile up in the refrigerator. Reynolds himself voices both animals, which makes the whole thing feel even more unhinged. | © Lionsgate
Cropped Vivarium

12. Vivarium (2019)

A couple looking to buy a starter home gets trapped in an identical suburban neighborhood called Yonder in Vivarium. Lorcan Finnegan directed the 2019 film on a set built almost entirely from green screen, with the same cul de sac repeating into infinity. A strange child arrives, ages unnaturally fast, and speaks in a voice that isn't his own. Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg spend the runtime aging decades while nothing outside the fence ever changes. | © Saban Films
Men

11. Men (2022)

Jessie Buckley rents a countryside cottage to grieve in peace, and every man in the village turns out to be played by Rory Kinnear. Alex Garland wrote and directed Men for A24, releasing it in 2022 after Annihilation put him on the horror map. The final stretch involves a birth sequence so graphic that early test screenings reportedly had walkouts. What starts as folk horror about grief ends somewhere closer to body horror about masculinity itself. | © A24
Cropped the menu

10. The Menu (2022)

Ralph Fiennes plays a chef named Julian Slowik, running a twelve-course tasting menu for guests who paid $1,250 a plate. Every dish in The Menu was designed by real chef Dominique Crenn, who has three Michelin stars in actual life. The trailer sold a dark comedy about rich people getting roasted. It does not mention where the night actually ends. | © Searchlight Pictures
Cropped Under the Silver Lake

9. Under the Silver Lake (2018)

A guy named Sam spends Under the Silver Lake chasing a neighbor who vanishes overnight, and the trail runs through secret societies, dog killers, and a comic book that predicts the future. Andrew Garfield plays him, and director David Robert Mitchell reportedly packed the frame with hundreds of hidden references to old Hollywood scandals. A24 released it in 2018 after delaying it twice. The marketing called it a mystery. It is closer to a fever dream about paranoia itself. | © A24
The Lobster

8. The Lobster (2015)

Picture a hotel where single guests have 45 days to find a partner or get turned into an animal. That is the premise of The Lobster, starring Colin Farrell as a man who picks a lobster as his backup fate. Yorgos Lanthimos shot it in Ireland in 2015, and every actor delivers their lines in the same flat, affectless tone. The trailer promised an awkward romance. What it delivers is a system with teeth. | © A24
Cropped Swiss Army Man

7. Swiss Army Man (2016)

Daniel Radcliffe spends most of Swiss Army Man as a farting corpse that Paul Dano drags through the forest, using the body as a compass, a water gun, and eventually a conversation partner. Directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert made their feature debut with it in 2016, and it opened to walkouts at Sundance. The trailer leaned hard into the gross-out gags. Underneath the fart jokes sits a real story about loneliness that catches people off guard. | © A24
Cropped Being John Malkovich

6. Being John Malkovich (1999)

John Malkovich plays a distorted version of himself in Being John Malkovich, a man whose own mind becomes a tourist attraction for strangers who pay $200 to climb inside it. Spike Jonze directed it from a script by Charlie Kaufman, his first produced screenplay, released in 1999. The trailer framed it as a quirky office comedy about a filing cabinet with a secret door. Nobody warned audiences about the part where Malkovich enters his own head and every person inside is also him. | © USA Films
Barbarian

5. Barbarian (2022)

Georgina Campbell shows up at an Airbnb in a rough Detroit neighborhood already booked by Bill Skarsgard. That's the entire pitch the trailers gave audiences for Barbarian. Zach Cregger wrote and directed it in 2022 after years working in comedy with the group Whitest Kids U' Know. The basement under that house goes places no rental listing would ever mention. | © 20th Century Studios
Cropped Sorry to Bother You

4. Sorry to Bother You (2018)

A telemarketer discovers his "white voice" gets him promoted fast in Sorry to Bother You. Lakeith Stanfield plays him, and David Cross actually recorded that voice work separately from the acting. Boots Riley, frontman of the hip hop group The Coup, wrote and directed this as his first feature in 2018. Somewhere past the halfway mark, the movie stops being about office politics entirely. | © Annapurna Pictures
The Cabin in the Woods

3. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Five college friends head to a remote cabin, which sounds like every slasher movie made since 1974. Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon wrote The Cabin in the Woods together in about three days back in 2009, then sat on it for two years after MGM's bankruptcy delayed release. The building sits on top of a control room staffed by bureaucrats running the whole thing like an office job. By the end there's a elevator full of monsters and a decision that ends the world. | © Lionsgate
Cropped Mother

2. Mother! (2017)

Jennifer Lawrence plays a woman rebuilding a house that keeps filling with strangers who won't leave. Darren Aronofsky wrote Mother! in five days and has said the whole thing works as a allegory for climate change and the Bible at once. Javier Bardem's character welcomes every intruder like an old friend while the house itself seems to breathe. It ends with a baby, a mob, and a heart torn out of a chest. | © Paramount Pictures
Beau Is Afraid

1. Beau Is Afraid (2023)

Joaquin Phoenix spends three hours trying to visit his mother in Beau Is Afraid. Ari Aster shot the film in 2022 on a budget reportedly around 35 million dollars, a huge jump from his earlier horror work on Hereditary and Midsommar. One stretch of the film turns into an animated stage play performed by a traveling theater troupe. What starts as a man late for a flight ends as a trial in a stadium full of strangers. | © A24
1-15

The trailer sold one movie and the finished product delivered something far weirder, darker, or more bizarre than anyone in the audience expected. Here are 15 movies that were much stranger than their trailers suggested.
