15 Movies With Legendary Casts That Still Somehow Failed

1-15

All the talent, none of the magic.

The Bonfire of the Vanities 1990

15. The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990)

Tom Hanks spent the late eighties as America's most trusted everyman, which made him the strangest possible choice for a Manhattan bond trader nobody was supposed to like. The Bonfire of the Vanities gutted Tom Wolfe's novel of its nastiness and replaced it with soft, toothless farce. Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith got stranded in the wreckage alongside him, and the satire that made the book sting just evaporated. Warner Bros spent a fortune proving that star power can't fix a script that's scared of its own material. | © Warner Bros
Cropped The Secret in Their Eyes

14. Secret in Their Eyes (2015)

A remake of an Oscar winner needs a reason to exist, and Secret in Their Eyes never found one. Julia Roberts plays against type as a grieving mother, which should have been the hook critics and audiences grabbed onto. Instead the twisty plotting from the original Argentine film gets flattened into something procedural and dull, wasting Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the process. Nobody asked for this one, and the finished film didn't make much of a case for itself either. | © STX Entertainment
The 355

13. The 355 (2022)

Spy thrillers live or die on momentum, and The 355 never built any. Jessica Chastain assembled this cast herself, pairing with Penélope Cruz and Lupita Nyong'o for a globe-trotting female ensemble that sounded great on paper. The action scenes feel generic, the plot mechanics creak, and the chemistry that should've carried the movie never quite ignites. It opened to a fraction of its budget and vanished from theaters almost as fast as it arrived. | © Universal Pictures
Valentines Day

12. Valentine's Day (2010)

Picture a cast list so stacked it reads like an awards show seating chart, then imagine none of it mattering. That's Valentine's Day, a romance stuffed with Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, and Bradley Cooper across a dozen barely connected storylines. Each pairing gets maybe ten minutes before the movie jumps to someone else, so nothing ever earns its emotional beat. Garry Marshall proved star power can fill a poster without filling in an actual story. | © Warner Bros
Dolittle 2020

11. Dolittle (2020)

Robert Downey Jr. talking to animals should have been an easy sell coming off a decade of box-office dominance. Dolittle buried him instead under distracting voice work from Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson and a plot that never settles on a tone. Reports of reshoots and ballooning costs became as big a story as the film itself. A reported budget north of 175 million dollars for a movie this forgettable is its own kind of statement. | © Universal Pictures
Mortdecai

10. Mortdecai (2015)

A mustache this distracting should have been the smallest problem in Mortdecai. Johnny Depp plays a dealer chasing a stolen painting, mugging through every scene like the camera owes him money. Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor get pulled into the bit, and the whole thing plays like an inside joke nobody explained to the audience. Lionsgate ended up with a comedy that cost far more than it ever earned back. | © Lionsgate
The Tourist

9. The Tourist (2010)

Two of the most photographed faces on the planet sit across from each other on a train, and somehow nothing happens. That is the entire problem with The Tourist, a thriller built around chemistry that never shows up. Angelina Jolie plays mysterious, Johnny Depp plays confused, and the plot twists itself into a shape nobody asked for. Sony released it expecting a hit and got a punchline instead. | © Sony Pictures
The Counselor 2013

8. The Counselor (2013)

Cormac McCarthy wrote the script for The Counselor, and it shows in ways that do not help the movie. Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, and Javier Bardem all deliver monologues about death and consequence like they are reciting scripture. The dialogue is dense, the violence is sudden, and the plot barely moves for long stretches. Fox put serious money behind a thriller that forgot to thrill anyone. | © 20th Century Fox
Cropped Aloha

7. Aloha (2015)

Hawaii looks gorgeous in Aloha, which ended up being one of the few things people agreed on. Bradley Cooper narrates his way through a plot about satellites and old flames that never quite clicks together. Emma Stone plays a fighter pilot, a casting choice that became its own headline for all the wrong reasons. Sony's romantic comedy landed with reviews colder than anyone expected from this cast. | © Sony Pictures
The Monuments Men

6. The Monuments Men (2014)

World War Two art theft sounds like a great premise for George Clooney and a cast full of his friends. The Monuments Men gathers Matt Damon, Bill Murray, and Clooney himself around a true story that deserved more urgency than it got. The tone wobbles between heist movie and history lesson without settling on either. Columbia Pictures ended up with a film that felt smaller than its subject and smaller than its cast. | © Columbia Pictures
Amsterdam

5. Amsterdam (2022)

Three Oscar winners and a plot nobody could explain afterward, that's Amsterdam in one sentence. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and Robert De Niro wander through a conspiracy story so tangled it forgets to let any of them breathe. The dialogue sounds like it's performing quirkiness rather than earning it. A film this stacked shouldn't feel like a chore to sit through. | © 20th Century Studios
Babylon

4. Babylon (2022)

Thirty-nine million dollars opening weekend against a reported budget of 110 million tells you everything about how Babylon landed. Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie throw themselves into the chaos of old Hollywood with real commitment, vomit, elephants, and all. None of that excess translates into something people wanted to watch for three hours straight. Excess without control just reads as noise, no matter how good the cast looks doing it. | © Paramount Pictures
The Flash

3. The Flash (2023)

Getting Michael Keaton back in the suit should have been the easiest win in superhero history. Instead The Flash buried that nostalgia under CGI faces that aged into something unwatchable within weeks of release. Ben Affleck and Michael Shannon show up mostly to remind you of better Batman movies. Warner Bros had a multiverse built for fan service and still couldn't make the service feel good. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Cats

2. Cats (2019)

Judi Dench and Ian McKellen built careers on dignity, and then Cats asked them to crawl around in digital fur. The effects looked unfinished at the premiere and somehow got worse once people started screenshotting it. Taylor Swift sprinkles catnip on the audience in a scene nobody has fully recovered from. Some casting decisions age fine; this one turned into a punchline before the opening weekend ended. | © Universal Pictures
Cropped movie 43

1. Movie 43 (2013)

Imagine pitching Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, and Halle Berry on a movie and telling them the script is a grab bag of unrelated gross-out sketches. That's Movie 43, a film so scattered it barely qualifies as one movie. Talented people appear for minutes at a time doing things that feel beneath every one of them. Few films waste this much star power this fast. | © Relativity Media
