15 Sci-Fi TV Shows with the Absolute Best Spaceship Designs

1-15

Ships worth the voyage.

Space 1999

15. Space: 1999 (1975-1977)

Space: 1999 got its science wrong constantly, but nobody tuned in for orbital mechanics lessons. The real star was the Eagle Transporter, a blocky, skeletal workhorse that looked like it was actually built for hauling cargo and crew across a hostile moon. Gerry Anderson's model team gave it interchangeable pods and exposed framework that made every other TV spaceship look overdesigned by comparison. Decades later, prop replicas of the Eagle still sell for serious money among collectors. | © ITV Studios

Cropped Dark Matter

14. Dark Matter (2015-2017)

The Raza in Dark Matter looks like a ship that actually gets used and abused. Scorch marks, cramped corridors, and a design that feels built for smuggling rather than showing off. Nothing about it screams luxury, which fits a crew of amnesiacs who do not even trust each other. That grounded, lived-in look is why fans of the show still bring up the Raza next to far more famous sci-fi ships. | © Syfy

For All Mankind

13. For All Mankind (2019-)

For All Mankind imagines what happens if the Soviets beat America to the moon, and that pressure changes everything NASA builds afterward. The Sea Dragon rockets look massive and brutal compared to real Saturn V designs, built out of pure competitive panic. By the time Sojourner heads to Mars, the show has created an entire alternate lineage of spacecraft that feels grounded in real engineering logic. It is rare to watch a show age its technology across decades and have every step still feel earned. | © Apple TV+

Cowboy Bebop

12. Cowboy Bebop (1998-1999)

The Bebop itself looks like a fishing trawler that got lost in space, rusted and lived-in rather than sleek. That grungy design choice fits the whole show, since Spike and Jet are bounty hunters barely scraping by, not military heroes flying pristine cruisers. Smaller ships like Swordfish II and Red Tail get just as much personality, built around each character's style instead of generic sci-fi templates. Shinichiro Watanabe treated ship design as costume design, and it shows in every cramped hallway and dented hull. | © Funimation
Star Trek Strange New Worlds

11. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022-)

The Enterprise in Strange New Worlds looks like someone finally gave the original 1960s design the budget it always deserved. Every corridor, console, and turbolift feels lived in, blending retro dials with modern lighting that never clashes. The ship reads as optimistic and functional at once, built for exploration instead of war. It is proof that nostalgia works best when you respect the source instead of just repainting it. | © Paramount+

Foundation 2021

10. Foundation (2021-)

Foundation treats its ships like ancient monuments instead of machines. The Imperial fleet looks cold and symmetrical, built to project unbroken power across centuries. Then you get the Spacers and Anacreon vessels, which feel organic and strange, like nothing born from the same civilization. That contrast alone tells you more about the galaxy's politics than half the dialogue does. | © Apple TV+

The Mandalorian 2019

9. The Mandalorian (2019-)

The Razor Crest looks like it was actually used for decades of bounty work before we ever met Mando. Every dent and scorch mark tells you something about the jobs that came before the show started. Then the show blows it up and hands him the Naboo N-1 starfighter, swapping grimy survival for something sleek and almost cheerful. That contrast says more about his arc than most of the dialogue does. | © Disney+
Andor

8. Andor (2022-)

Andor treats spaceships like actual machines people work on, not shiny toys. Cassian's rusted-out skiff looks like something held together with tape and stubbornness, which fits the show's whole grimy, lived-in universe. Imperial cruisers show up looking cold and bureaucratic, all sharp angles and control, while rebel ships feel improvised and desperate. Even the background freighters at Ferrix look like they have history, and that detail sells the entire show. | © Disney+

Babylon 5 1993 1998

7. Babylon 5 (1993-1998)

Babylon 5 built its ships around actual physics instead of just cool silhouettes, and it shows. Starfuries rotate and thrust like real vacuum-native fighters, spinning in place to fire instead of banking like airplanes in space. Then you get the Vorlon and Shadow vessels, both organic and alive in ways that make human tech look primitive by comparison. The show proved you could do hard science and eerie biological horror in the same universe without either one feeling out of place. | © Warner Bros

Farscape

6. Farscape (1999-2003)

Farscape threw out the usual metal hull approach and gave us Moya, a spaceship that is actually alive. She breathes, she bleeds, and she can get pregnant, which makes every hallway feel more like walking through a body than a vehicle. Jim Henson's Creature Shop built the interiors with pulsing organic textures instead of clean sci-fi panels, and it still looks unlike anything else from that era. Leviathans like Moya turned the whole idea of a starship into something closer to a character with her own moods and instincts. | © SYFY

Stargate SG 1 1997 2007

5. Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007)

Stargate SG-1 spent its early seasons showing off Goa'uld motherships shaped like pyramids, which sounds silly until you see one hovering over a planet. Ha'tak vessels turned ancient Egyptian imagery into something genuinely threatening, all gold trim and sublight engines. Once Earth started building its own ships like the Prometheus and the Daedalus, the design language shifted toward something more familiar, borrowed from Asgard technology and human ambition mixed together. Ten seasons gave this show time to build an entire visual history of who was flying what and why it mattered. | © MGM Television

Firefly

4. Firefly (2002-2003)

Serenity looks like a ship people actually work on for a living, not a prop built to impress anyone. The Firefly-class hull mixes rusted metal and worn interiors with a shape that reads more like a bird than a warship. Every dent and patch job tells you this crew is scraping by, which fits the whole show's blue collar take on space travel. Fox canceled Firefly way too early, but Serenity stuck around as one of the most recognizable ships in sci-fi. | © Fox
Star Trek the Next Generation

3. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

The Enterprise-D looks less like a warship and more like a floating hotel, which was exactly the point. Wide corridors, carpeted floors, and a ten-forward lounge with windows facing the stars made it feel like a place people actually lived instead of just fought from. Gene Roddenberry pushed for that sense of comfort, and it gave the ship a personality separate from any battle it flew into. Even the saucer separation sequence, clunky as it looks now, sold the idea that this vessel had layers most starships never bothered with. | © Paramount
Battlestar Galactica

2. Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

Battlestar Galactica took a warship built in the 1970s aesthetic and made it feel like it actually had rust and welded plating. The titular ship looks massive and deliberately outdated, packed with analogue switches and phone handsets instead of touchscreens. That choice makes the Vipers and Raptors launching off its deck feel like they're flying out of a real military vessel, not a prop. Even the Cylon Basestars, with their organic curves and red lighting, work as a visual argument for how alien their pilots really are. | © NBCUniversal

The Expanse

1. The Expanse (2015-2022)

The Expanse treats its ships like actual machines instead of props floating in space. The Rocinante feels lived in, with cramped corridors, exposed wiring, and a crew that constantly fights against g-forces during burns. Every design choice traces back to real physics, from spin gravity on the Nauvoo to how ships have to flip and burn to slow down. That commitment to plausibility is exactly why fans still bring this show up when arguing about the most realistic spacecraft on television. | © Amazon Prime Video

1-15

In great sci-fi, the spaceship is practically a character in its own right, and some shows nailed designs so iconic they're burned into fans' memories. From sleek warships to lived-in cargo haulers, these vessels defined their series. Here are 15 sci-fi TV shows with the absolute best spaceship designs.
