15 TV Characters Who Made Every Scene Worse

1-15

The ones we dreaded seeing.

TV Shows & Movies - October 21st 2026, 20:30 GMT+2
Malick D

15. Malick D. (2022-2023)

Nobody asked for Malick D., and Call My Agent! felt the absence of a question mark the moment he showed up. The French comedy had spent years building a rhythm around its agency staff and their chaotic celebrity clients. Then this addition arrived, slowing scenes down and adding conflict that never earned its runtime. A show built on tight, fast farce does not need dead weight parked in the middle of it. | © Netflix
Ani Achola

14. Ani Achola (2024)

Picture a show already juggling three timelines, then handing a chunk of its final season to a character nobody was clamoring for. That is the problem with Ani Achola in 13 Reasons Why. Her arc leans so hard into cryptic withholding that entire scenes exist just to stall information the audience already suspects. Mystery only works when it feels earned, and here it mostly feels stalled. | © HBO

Kennedy

13. Kennedy (2003-2003)

Three words sum up Kennedy's run on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: nobody liked her. She shows up late in the final season picking fights with Buffy over leadership nobody asked her to seize. Her confidence reads as entitlement rather than strength, especially next to characters who clawed their way through seven seasons of actual trauma. A newcomer demanding respect instead of earning it rarely lands well with longtime viewers. | © The WB
Matt Donovan

12. Matt Donovan (2009-2017)

Complaining becomes a personality trait somewhere around season three of The Vampire Diaries, and Matt Donovan never lets it go. He survives nearly every supernatural disaster in Mystic Falls yet treats each one like a personal insult. There's no growth, just the same tired grievances dressed up in a new crisis every week. Being the only human in a town full of vampires should be interesting, but Matt made it a chore. | © The CW
Mike Wheeler

11. Mike Wheeler (2016-2025)

By the time Stranger Things reaches its later seasons, Mike Wheeler has somehow become the least likable person in Hawkins. He fumbles basic emotional conversations with El like he has never met another human being. His jealousy and clumsiness read as regression rather than realistic teenage awkwardness. A show full of monsters still managed to make its nominal hero the most frustrating character to watch. | © Netflix
Veronica Lodge

10. Veronica Lodge (2017-2023)

Every season of Riverdale finds a new way to drag Veronica Lodge into the same fight. She breaks up with Archie, gets back with Archie, threatens a rival with her father's money, repeat. The speakeasy, the family drama, the engagement that nobody believed for a second, it all starts to blur together by season four. A character stuck recycling the same conflict stops feeling like a character and starts feeling like a plot device. | © The CW
Dre Johnson

9. Dre Johnson (2014-2022)

Dre Johnson narrates half of every episode of black-ish, and that is part of the problem. He turns small family disagreements into speeches about his own importance, usually while everyone else just wants dinner. Workplace slights become identity crises, parenting choices become referendums on his childhood, and the show lets him monologue through all of it. A sitcom about a family starts to feel like a one-man show with a cast standing around him. | © ABC
Tom Haverford

8. Tom Haverford (2009-2015)

Selfishness has a face on Parks and Recreation, and it belongs to Tom Haverford. He treats the Parks department as a launchpad for whatever business scheme he is currently obsessed with, from Entertainment 720 to Rent-A-Swag. Coworkers cover for him, bail him out, and absorb the fallout while he moves on to the next idea. Charm only excuses so much before the pattern just looks like using people. | © NBC
Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries

7. Elena Gilbert (2009-2017)

By the time The Vampire Diaries hits its later seasons, Elena Gilbert's love life has swallowed the entire show. Stefan or Damon, on again, off again, memory wiped and restored just to start the cycle over. Side characters get turned, killed, and resurrected around her, yet the emotional center keeps circling back to the same triangle. A supernatural show with that much mythology deserves a lead who moves the plot instead of stalling it. | © The CW
Debbie Gallagher

6. Debbie Gallagher (2011-2021)

Nobody in the Gallagher family starts out easy to root for, but Debbie Gallagher finds new lows as Shameless goes on. She manipulates a grown man into a relationship as a teenager, then treats the fallout as something that happened to her. Motherhood does not soften her either, as she cycles through bad decisions and blames siblings for the consequences. A show built on messy characters still needs one who learns something, and Debbie mostly refuses. | © Showtime
Chuck Bass

5. Chuck Bass (2007-2012)

A teenage Chuck Bass blackmails, manipulates, and traps women in bets within the first season of Gossip Girl alone. The writers kept dressing it up as romance, pairing him with Blair Waldorf like obsession and possessiveness were the same thing as love. He gets better scenes as the show goes on, sure, but the early damage sets the tone for how the whole relationship gets read. Charisma does a lot of heavy lifting here, and it still isn't enough. | © The CW
Owen Hunt

4. Owen Hunt (2010-2024)

Few partners on Grey's Anatomy get as much benefit of the doubt as Owen Hunt. His PTSD explains plenty, but it doesn't explain choking Cristina or spending years trying to steer her away from the career she wanted. Every relationship he's in turns into a slow negotiation over how much of herself the other person gets to keep. Trauma makes for good backstory, not a free pass. | © ABC
Dawson Leery

3. Dawson Leery (1998-2003)

Self-pity practically has a face on Dawson's Creek, and it belongs to Dawson Leery. He monologues about his feelings more than any other teenager in Capeside, usually while everyone around him is dealing with actual problems. Joey and Pacey get real arcs involving growth and consequence, while Dawson mostly circles back to how misunderstood he feels. A show named after him still somehow makes him the least interesting person in it. | © The WB
Andy Bernard

2. Andy Bernard (2006-2013)

What happens when a workplace sitcom hands its most grating character a permanent seat at the table? The Office found out with Andy Bernard, whose anger management issues and need for approval never stopped being exhausting. The banjo, the Cornell mentions, the constant need to be the center of attention, none of it lets up even as the show tries to soften him into a romantic lead. He replaces Michael Scott and the show never quite recovers the rhythm it had before him. | © NBC
Cropped Ross Geller Friends 1994

1. Ross Geller (1994-2004)

Ross Geller breaks up with Rachel over one night and then spends the rest of Friends acting like she owes him forever. He lists her flaws on a whiteboard, melts down over a lesbian ex-wife, and turns jealousy into a running bit the show treats as charming. Three divorces by his thirties should be a red flag, not a punchline. The laugh track covers for him so often that the pattern barely registers until you actually count the incidents. | © NBC
