15. The X-Files (1993-2002; 2016-2018)

Mulder and Scully spent their first season chasing monsters of the week with a budget that clearly did not match their ambition. Once The X-Files figured out its rhythm, the mythology episodes started building something bigger, and the show got genuinely unsettling instead of just moody. Season two gave us Duane Barry, gave Gillian Anderson room to carry entire episodes alone, and made the conspiracy feel like it actually had architecture behind it. Six years is a long time to spend proving a spinoff didn't need to just coast on nostalgia. Better Call Saul opens as Jimmy McGill's story, a small-time hustler trying to go straight, and only becomes Saul Goodman's origin story once it earns the right to.
