15 TV Shows That Became More Loved With Every Season

1-15

Better every year.

Cropped Person of Interest

15. Person of Interest (2011-2016)

A surveillance AI watching New York for crimes before they happen sounds like a simple procedural hook, and for a season or two, that's exactly what Person of Interest was. Then the machine got a rival, the case-of-the-week structure fell away, and the show turned into something closer to a meditation on free will and control. Root and Shaw became one of the most quietly devastating duos on television. Few shows have hidden this much ambition behind this plain a title. | © CBS
New Girl

14. New Girl (2011-2018)

Jess Day moved into a loft with three strangers, and New Girl spent its first season figuring out what to do with that setup. By the time Schmidt, Nick, Winston, and Cece settled into their rhythms, the show had quietly become one of the best hangout comedies on TV. The true crime episode. The bar fights. The true American game of "Thunder and Lightning" that makes no sense and somehow still gets you invested. Nobody saw this ensemble coming together so well from that first wobbly season. | © Hulu
Seinfeld

13. Seinfeld (1989-1998)

Nothing was supposed to happen on Seinfeld, and somehow that became the whole appeal. Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer turned parking garages, soup lines, and close talkers into entire mythologies. The later seasons leaned harder into absurdity, giving us the Soup Nazi, the Bizarro World, and Festivus, and the show only got sharper for it. A sitcom about nothing ended up defining an entire decade of comedy. | © NBC
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Chosen

12. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Sunnydale High sits on top of a Hellmouth, which is a pretty good metaphor for being a teenager. Buffy the Vampire Slayer started as a clever monster-of-the-week show and grew into something willing to kill off characters, break format entirely, and sit with real grief. "The Body" and "Once More, with Feeling" shouldn't exist in the same show, yet here they are. Few series earned the right to experiment this much, and fewer still pulled it off. | © The WB
Star Trek the Next Generation

11. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

Captain Picard almost didn't survive the first season, and honestly, neither did the show's reputation. Star Trek: The Next Generation spent its early episodes finding its footing, stiff dialogue and all. Then came "The Best of Both Worlds," Data's slow unfolding humanity, and a crew that felt like a real family stretched across the galaxy. By the end, it wasn't just good science fiction, it was the version of Star Trek people measure every other version against. | © Paramount
Halt and Catch Fire

10. Halt and Catch Fire (2014-2017)

Almost nobody watched Halt and Catch Fire when it premiered, and that's a shame given where it ended up. The first season sells itself as a Steve Jobs knockoff drama about computer startups, then quietly swaps that premise for something about ambition, friendship, and the people who get left behind by progress. Donna and Cameron's relationship becomes the real engine of the show, outlasting every plotline about hardware and modems. By the finale, it had turned into one of the most quietly devastating shows about work and partnership on television. | © AMC
Black Sails 2014 2017 cropped processed by imagy

9. Black Sails (2014-2017)

Pirates, as a concept, had no business carrying a show this smart. Black Sails starts as a loose prequel to Treasure Island and ends up being a sharp study of empire, debt, and rebellion with cannon fire attached. Captain Flint's rage makes sense scene by scene until the final season recontextualizes his entire war. It deserved the audience that shows with half its ambition got instead. | © Starz
Bojack horseman

8. BoJack Horseman (2014-2020)

A cartoon horse was not supposed to make anyone cry, yet BoJack Horseman managed it repeatedly. The jokes stay sharp and absurd even as the show digs into addiction, depression, and the damage people do while insisting they're trying to change. "Free Churro" and "Fish Out of Water" prove the series could abandon its own format whenever the story demanded it. Few shows balanced laughs and genuine despair this well without tipping over into either extreme. | © Netflix
The Americans

7. The Americans (2013-2018)

Philip and Elizabeth Jennings spend six seasons pretending to be ordinary Americans while running Soviet intelligence out of their garage. The Americans never rushes a reveal or wastes a silence, letting dread accumulate across entire episodes instead of scenes. Their marriage, fake at the start, becomes the most complicated and real relationship on the show. The final season doesn't just land the plot, it lands the emotional weight of everything that came before. | © FX
Succession

6. Succession (2018-2023)

Money solves nothing for the Roy family, and Succession spends four seasons proving it with increasing cruelty. Every boardroom scene doubles as a family dinner nobody wanted to attend, full of insults dressed up as jokes. Kendall's arc alone goes from tragic to pathetic to something almost sympathetic without ever asking for sympathy outright. By the end, the show had turned corporate backstabbing into the most compelling family portrait on television. | © HBO
The Office

5. The Office (2005-2013)

Michael Scott makes a joke so bad in the pilot that NBC almost didn't order more episodes. The Office spent its early run copying the British version before it figured out Scranton deserved its own voice. Once it did, a paper company became the backdrop for some of the warmest friendships on television. Jim's pranks on Dwight never got old because underneath the pettiness was real affection. | © NBC
Parks and Recreation

4. Parks and Recreation (2009-2015)

Pawnee's parks department starts out as a punchline about government inefficiency. Parks and Recreation needed a full season to realize Leslie Knope wasn't a joke, she was the whole point. From there the writing sharpened and the cast locked into a rhythm that never let up. Ron Swanson's silence somehow got funnier every season it lasted. | © NBC
Schitts Creek

3. Schitt's Creek (2015-2020)

Nobody expected much from a show about a rich family losing everything and moving into a motel. Schitt's Creek used that premise to slowly strip away the Roses' pretensions and show what was underneath. David and Patrick's wedding landed as hard as it did because six seasons built toward it patiently. By the end, a town nobody wanted to live in felt like somewhere you didn't want to leave. | © CBC / Netflix (US)
Better Call Saul

2. Better Call Saul (2015-2022)

Jimmy McGill wasn't supposed to be interesting on his own, he was comic relief in someone else's story. Better Call Saul proved that wrong across six seasons of quiet, patient destruction. Kim Wexler's arc turned out to be just as devastating as Walter White's, maybe more so. The black and white epilogues alone show more restraint than most shows manage in color. | © AMC
Breaking Bad

1. Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

A chemistry teacher cooks meth to pay medical bills, and that sentence undersells everything Breaking Bad became. Walter White's transformation happened so gradually that viewers kept rooting for him long after they probably should have stopped. Each season pushed the lies further and the body count higher without ever losing the thread of who these people were. "I am the one who knocks" works because five years of small choices earned it. | © AMC
