An Italian woman believed her lottery ticket was worthless and threw it directly into the trash. In reality, she had won one million euros. What followed was an extraordinary two-day rescue operation mounted by local sanitation workers.
Million-Euro Ticket Ends Up in the Trash
For a lottery player in the southern Italian city of Bitonto, a life-changing fortune nearly disappeared into an incinerator. The woman scanned her ticket at an automated machine, which displayed an error stating that the prize could not be paid out.
Misinterpreting the alert, she assumed the slip held zero value and tossed it into the store's waste bin. The machine did not reject the ticket because it was worthless, but because the payout was too high for an on-the-spot retail redemption.
Relative Notices the Winning Numbers
It was only after speaking with a relative that she discovered her chosen numbers (2, 4, 8, 10, and 51) had matched the winning draw. The discarded piece of paper was officially worth one million euros.
By the time she rushed back to the shop, the bins had already been emptied. Desperate to recover it, she contacted local waste management agency SANB. Dispatchers retraced the collection route, pinpointed the exact garbage truck, and halted its disposal run.
Search Through More Than Six Tons of Waste
Due to safety protocols surrounding industrial waste sorting, crews could not unload the truck at the local depot. The vehicle was rerouted to a specialized municipal waste plant near Bari.
Over the course of 48 hours, sanitation workers manually sifted through more than six tons of compacted refuse. Against all odds, an employee spotted the intact lottery ticket inside a ripped garbage bag alongside several discarded receipts.
Winner Weeps with Relief
When SANB representative Roberto Nicola Toscano delivered the news, the winner broke down in tears. Toscano later described the recovery as nothing short of a small miracle.
While the winner agreed to reimburse the utility for the logistical costs of the search operation, she successfully claimed her remaining payout.
The good fortune even rubbed off on the recovery team: celebrating the find, several crew members pooled change for a scratch-off ticket and hit a 50-euro prize of their own.
