The surprise was significant when Sony first unveiled God of War: Laufey during its State of Play event. Instead of Kratos, the focus of the new adventure is Faye, the late wife of the iconic Spartan warrior. Until now, many fans assumed the project only came into existence after the success of God of War Ragnarök. However, new statements suggest a very different timeline.

Deborah Ann Woll Knew About The Plans As Early As 2018

In an interview, actress Deborah Ann Woll, who provides the voice and performance for Faye, revealed that she had already been informed about the project back in 2018. This would make the idea for the spin-off nearly as old as the God of War reboot itself.

According to Woll, showrunner Cory Barlog introduced her to the core concept of the game at that time. Early concepts and key story elements were already in place as well. The actress subsequently had to keep the secret for around eight years without letting a single detail slip to the public.

What makes this even more interesting is Woll’s recollection that Barlog showed her early artwork and concept designs for the project. Among them was a mysterious cube, which has since been revealed as a companion character named “Phranque.”

This strongly suggests that core ideas and characters from God of War: Laufey have been part of Sony Santa Monica’s creative planning for years. The development of the spin-off appears to have started much earlier than many fans had expected.

The Faye Project Was Reportedly A Passion Project

For Deborah Ann Woll, the game holds a special significance. She described Laufey as one of her favorite projects to date. According to her, she experienced a great deal of creative freedom during development and was left in awe after seeing the first gameplay footage.

Statements from director Ariel Lawrence also suggest that the story surrounding Faye had already been discussed within the studio for years. While the exact timelines differ slightly, both accounts confirm one thing: the idea existed long before its official reveal.

When Will God Of War: Laufey Be Released?

There is currently no official release date. However, industry insiders believe that fans may not have to wait too long for the new adventure.

The announcement sparked intense discussion within the community shortly after its reveal. While many players are excited about Faye taking center stage, others have expressed more critical opinions. At the same time, Cory Barlog confirmed that Kratos’ story is far from over, with further entries in the franchise still planned.

With God of War: Laufey, Sony expands the universe of the acclaimed series with a new perspective. The latest revelations suggest one key takeaway: the plans for Faye existed many years before the public even became aware of the project.

For fans, this means Sony Santa Monica has been shaping the future of the franchise for a long time and that even more surprises may still await Kratos, Faye, and the world of God of War.
