Mexican influencer El Piturris has been shot dead while working at his family’s taco shop in Sonora.
José Luis Esparza, better known online as El Piturris, was killed on September 10 in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. The influencer and podcast host was just 37 years old.
Investigators Suspect Connection To Criminal Groups
The attack happened while Esparza was working at his family’s taco shop, Los Güichos. According to authorities, an armed man entered the restaurant and shot him before fleeing the scene with another person on a motorcycle.
Two .40-caliber shell casings were recovered at the scene. Investigators have reportedly found similarities between these casings and evidence from another fatal shooting that took place the previous day in nearby Cócorit.
Authorities are also investigating a possible connection involving one of Esparza’s relatives by marriage. The man reportedly worked as a musician and songwriter and was linked to songs made for members of a criminal organization. His past in the United States is also reportedly being examined by investigators.
Because of these connections, authorities are reportedly looking into the possibility that Esparza’s killing could be linked to a conflict between criminal groups involved in drug trafficking.
However, this remains an investigative hypothesis rather than a confirmed motive. There is currently no indication that Esparza himself was involved in criminal activity.
El Piturris Leaves Behind Young Son
Outside of his work at the family restaurant, Esparza had built a sizeable online following. Around 130,000 people followed him across social media, where he was known for his humorous content and podcast La Guarida.
The 37-year-old also leaves behind a young son. Friends, colleagues, and fans have since shared tributes online following his death. His podcast may also continue after his passing. Two episodes had reportedly already been recorded before the shooting and could still be released.
Authorities have yet to publicly identify a suspect or confirm the motive behind the killing. The investigation remains ongoing.
