An influencer was seriously injured by a shark during his first dive in Fiji.
What started as a routine spearfishing trip ended with a hospital stay for New Zealand influencer Henry Gibbs. During his first dive in Fiji, the content creator was attacked by a reef shark and suffered severe injuries to his right leg. The entire attack was captured on camera.
Four Surgeries After Shark Attack
The attack happened during a spearfishing trip off the coast of Fiji. After the shark bit him, Gibbs' friends Colby and Dan immediately pulled him out of the water, provided first aid, and rushed him to the hospital. There, the influencer underwent four surgeries and a skin graft to treat the serious injuries to his right leg.
A few days later, Gibbs shared an update on Instagram. He said he felt “incredibly lucky” to have kept his leg and to still have full movement in his foot. According to his doctors, he is expected to make a full recovery. He also thanked his friends and the medical staff who helped him after the attack.
“No Hard Feelings” Toward the Shark
Despite the life-threatening encounter, Gibbs does not blame the shark. In his statement, he explained that he had entered the animal's natural habitat while hunting the same prey. In his view, the attack was simply an unfortunate set of circumstances.
The influencer also released the graphic footage of the shark attack. His goal is to educate other divers by sharing important safety lessons. Among his recommendations are ending a dive immediately if a shark's behavior changes and avoiding highly visible camouflage wetsuits in tropical waters. Gibbs said the experience has given him an entirely new appreciation for life.
