Danish left-wing brings naked Trump statue to EU Parliament. Artist taunts: "Dictators don't like you laughing at them!"
A massive, gilded caricature of Donald Trump titled "The Orange Plague" has landed directly inside the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Coated in 23-karat gold leaf, the provocative sculpture depicts a naked Trump clutching an oversized golf club and tiny scales of justice while perched atop the shoulders of a starving man. The display has sparked immediate fury in parliamentary corridors, though Danish sculptor Jens Galschiøt quipped that Trump would probably love the golden spectacle in his own eccentric way.
"Dictators don't like you laughing at them"
"Dictators don't like you laughing at them," Galschiøt noted, pointing to the raw satirical power of the artwork. According to the artist, every inch of the eight-foot piece carries sharp political symbolism. Perching the heavy figure over a buckling, emaciated laborer highlights the toll placed on the Global South and working-class families under global economic pressures. The props are just as pointed: the gigantic golf club takes aim at elite excess and climate neglect, while the shrunken scales of justice mock the erosion of international law under populist leaders.
The reception inside the EU legislature has been anything but quiet. Belgian Vlaams Belang MEP Barbara Bonte took to social media to blast the installation as an outright disgrace pushed under the guise of art, arguing that officials lecturing the public on dignity cannot even show basic courtesy to the leader of an allied nation.
Carved directly into the base of the statue is a scathing inscription: "I am sitting on the back of a man. He is sinking under the burden. I would do anything to help him. Except stepping down from his back." Sponsored by Danish MEP Per Clausen, the display serves as an unapologetic swipe at political inaction before it hits the road for the UN Climate Change Conference.
