Nearly 30 years after the franchise first launched, Pokémon cards are once again at the center of a global collecting boom. Continued attention from content creators has only fueled the hype further, pushing demand and prices to new heights. Some limited cards now sell for tens of thousands of dollars, making them attractive not only to collectors and retailers, but also to thieves.

Break-In Completed In Just 39 Seconds

The incident took place at trading card store The Card Lab in Brentwood, California. Security footage captured the entire theft, showing three masked suspects who appeared to know exactly what they were looking for. Within seconds, they jumped over the counter and grabbed the store's most valuable products. The trio then fled the scene in a Nissan Altima and remains at large, according to local police. What stood out most was how carefully planned the theft appeared to be. Rather than grabbing random merchandise, the suspects focused almost entirely on products with a high resale value.

Around $15,000 In Damage For A Newly Opened Store

Authorities estimate that Pokémon cards worth roughly $15,000 were stolen during the break-in. The loss is especially painful given that the store had only opened two months earlier. A staff member was inside the building at the time but happened to be on another floor when the theft occurred.

The store owner reportedly checked on the employee's well-being before discussing the financial damage. Fortunately, no one was injured. The shop temporarily closed following the incident to install additional security measures. While a large retailer might be able to absorb a loss of this size, it could have much more serious consequences for a young specialty business.

Pokémon Cards Are Becoming A Bigger Target

This was not an isolated incident. Just days earlier, trading cards and merchandise worth at least $40,000 were stolen in New Jersey. In recent months, organized thefts and break-ins have become increasingly common across both the United States and Japan. Some rare cards are now treated almost like luxury goods, and their high value combined with easy transport makes the booming collectibles market an attractive target for criminals.

The Real Team Rocket?

While many fans on social media have compared the suspects to Team Rocket from the Pokémon anime, the incident highlights a much more serious trend. As prices continue to rise, Pokémon cards are becomingincreasingly valuable to collectors and increasingly attractive to thieves. As a result, retailers are being forced to invest more heavily in security measures to protect their inventory.
