Onions have layers, ogres have layers and so do marketing campaigns. DreamWorks first teased us with a cast teaser for Shrek 5 in 2025. Back then, the cinema release was planned for Christmas 2026. Now, in the new teaser trailer, they announced the official movie release for June 30, 2027. After roughly 17 years, there will be a new mainline movie featuring our favorite ogre and donkey.

The Original Cast Is Back

Familiar voices will return for the movie:

  • Mike Myers returns as Shrek
  • Eddie Murphy as Donkey
  • Cameron Diaz as Fiona

As a new generation of characters enters the spotlight, a new voice actress joins the movie. Zendaya will be the voice of Shrek and Fiona's daughter Felicia.

Fans are happy that the production sticks to the cast that many of us watched and fell in love with while growing up. The dynamics between the characters don't seem to have changed much, judging by the trailer.

What Fans Can Expect

According to the trailer, the group leaves their usual environment as several new locations are shown. One small detail in the trailer suggests that Shrek and his family might be leaving Far Far Away behind. Instead, they are going "Further, Further Away" – a playful twist on what seems to be the new movie's main location.

At one point in the trailer, Shrek, Donkey and their companions end up in jail. The only reasonable thing to do, of course, is to show that Donkey is still completely unable to recognize the seriousness of the situation as he starts singing "Roxanne" by The Police a cappella. A very classic joke in the Shrek universe, as the younger audience will laugh at Donkey’s terrible timing, while the older generation must chuckle over the out-of-pocket lyrics.

The Community Is Divided By The New Look

Fans love the return of the pop-culture classic, but the biggest community discussion is not about the story – it's about the new character designs.

The new look has already been criticized by many fans. The fact that Shrek looks significantly older shouldn't be a problem, but the redesign still sparks debate throughout the community. Many say he doesn't just look older, but completely different and that they first must get used to the new appearance.

While the animation looks cleaner and more modern in general, this small detail appears to be one of the most discussed topics online. The trailer has generally received a positive reception, and die-hard fans can't wait to be first in line for movie tickets next year.

Let us know in the comments what you think about the updated character designs. Are you looking forward to Shrek and Donkey's newest adventure?
