Artificial intelligence continues to divide Hollywood, and Star Wars creator George Lucas has now made it clear which side he's on. In a recent interview, the legendary filmmaker argued that AI is becoming an unavoidable part of production.

He went on to compare those who fight AI to luddites, who would have fought to protect horses when cars were invented.

George Lucas Calls AI The Future Of Filmmaking

Speaking to A Rabbit's Foot, Lucas said artificial intelligence will make it much easier for filmmakers to create movies in the future. While acknowledging that every new technology comes with risks, he argued that progress can't simply be stopped.

"There's nothing you can do about it. That's progress, it's the future."

According to Lucas, rejecting AI today is similar to insisting that horse-drawn carriages were better than cars simply because cars introduced new problems.

A Minortiy in Opinion in Hollywood

Lucas comments arrive at a time when the entertainment industry remains deeply divided over generative AI. While many actors, writers, and filmmakers have voiced concerns about copyright, job security, and the replacement of human creativity, Lucas sees AI as another technological leap rather than a threat.

The filmmaker also argued that AI could eventually help verify whether content is authentic and where it originated. At the same time, he stressed that responsibility should always remain with the people using the technology, not the AI itself.

But for a Digital Effects Pioneer? Par for the Course

Lucas perspective isn't entirely surprising given his history of embracing new filmmaking technology. Throughout his career, he helped push digital visual effects into the mainstream through Industrial Light & Magic and was among the first major directors to fully embrace digital filmmaking long before it became the industry standard.

His latest comments have already sparked debate across the film industry, especially as other high-profile directors continue to question how AI should be used in creative work. Whether audiences agree with him or not, Lucas believes one thing is certain, artificial intelligence is here to stay.

What do you think? Is George Lucas right that AI is simply the next step in filmmaking, or should Hollywood be more cautious? Let us know in the comments!
