Ironmen are some of the most challenging sports events there are. Huge distances to swim, run and bike are the norm and the people participating train for years to be able to make it. So too did this fitness influencer, who sadly drowned during a recent Ironman in Texas.

Woman Drowns During Ironman In Texas

On April 18, an Ironman was scheduled to take place near Houston, Texas. It was supposed to include a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. The starting signal went off early morning at 6am when the participants took off into the waters of the Woodlands Lake, which had a temperature of around 74°F (or 23°C).

During the race, participants and lifeguards started noticing one athlete missing and alerted volunteers and officials, according to a Facebook post from volunteer Shawn McDonald.

After the start, we paddled alongside swimmers, offering a hand…Then we heard a whistle. I could see swimmers clinging to their kayak. I heard them say, ‘She went under.’

Panic spread and the search began immediately but was made difficult by the conditions of the water. With the help of radar devices, the athlete was found in three meter depth. Sadly, it was too late for her and only her body was recovered around 9am local time. She was pronounced dead on scene.

The event organizer shared a statement on Facebook confirming the death of the participant. It reads:

We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the swim portion of today’s IRONMAN Texas triathlon. We send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the athlete and will offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time. Our gratitude goes out to the first responders for their assistance.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office also released a statement assuring police investigation.

Mara Flávia Araújo

Although police kept the identity of the victim unreleased, Melissa Araújo confirmed the death of her sister Mara Flávia Araújo to the Brazilian portal g1.

Mara Flávia Araújo was a 38-year-old athlete and influencer from São Paulo who shared her fitness journey and training on her over 60,000 follower strong Instagram page. She had already participated in multiple Triathlons and even Ironman events, so was well versed in this area. She described her turn to sports and fitness as a kind of "rebirth".

What is especially tragic: A friend of Araújo reported to CNN that he had warned her not to attend the race. She had been sick with the flu before her travel and her friend thought her too weak to participate in the Ironman. But regardless, the athlete went into the water that fateful morning, never to return.

The exact cause of her death remains unknown.
