Viewers always wait for an event where they can meet their favorite streamers and the sound of being on vacation with them for six days is even better. That's what Northernlion probably thought when he planned and announced his streamer supercruise, including liveshows, Q&As and more. But only 3 days later, he already canceled it due to his communities' safety concerns.

Northernlion's Supercruise

Northernlion, or Ryan Gary Letourneau, is a 37-year-old Canadian Twitch streamer and YouTuber, mostly broadcasting himself playing various games. Currently, he has over 934k followers on Twitch.

On April 13, the gaming influencer announced his very own supercruise event, calling it "NORTHERNLION SUPERCRUISE". It was supposed to be a six-day cruise going from Tampa, Florida to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico from March 8 to 13, 2027. Northernlion excitedly announced his plans calling it a "5 Day Royal Carribiean Experience Unlike Any Other".

The cruise was not only planned to feature Northernlion himself of course, but also fellow streamers Squeex and Lovelymomo, as well as Big Brother host Dan Gheesling and more. Northernlion promised meet-and-greets, cocktail parties, live variety shows, Q&As and many more entertainment ideas and opportunities to meet the streamers.

Anyone think that the activities on the cruise are a bit lacking in things to do?

In his announcement it is also emphasized that there will be security on board and everything is safe and handled as they are partnered with an experienced reputable company. Because although it is advertised as a Northernlion streamer supercruise, the event was planned to take place parallel to normal cruise life. So the cruise itself was suposed to be a normal Royal Carribiean cruise where other people not related to the streamer event can have their vacation and the Northernlion events will be an add on for people who have the respective keycard purchased through his website (now no longer active).

There were three available lodging options for the cruise: a solo “gamer” cabin ($1,800), a “duo queue” cabin ($2,049), and a premium “squad up” cabin for multiple people ($2,159).

Viewers could not believe this announcemet at first, thinking it was a joke but Northernlion assured the sincerity of his claims. Many were sceptical of the fact that the streamer would voluntarily lock himself on a ship with his Twitch chat considering how these kinds of events often turn out and considering Northernlion had previously refused to do meet-and-greets at conventions.

Viewers mainly critisized the environmental aspect of a supercruise, the parasocial pressure to buy very expensive tickets to meet a streamer impossible to meet otherwise because of his refusal to do meet-and-greets, the planning of the event relying on Dan Gheesling and his mother, who works with Royal Caribbean, and most of all safety concerns.

A "Miscalculation"

On April 16, just three days after the announcement, Northernlion officially cancelled his supercruise. After many of his viewers shared their critique and concerns, the streamer felt "uncomfortable" proceeding with his plans.

He felt uneasy with the idea of having his community under his care in an environment where he was not in complete control.

What happens if someone gets hurt or gets sick or something? (…) We only wanted to do it if it felt like everyone was comfortable, and I was getting more and more uncomfortable with the idea.

He called the event a "miscalculation" and promised full refunds for those who had already purchased tickets. To make up for it, the streamer also considered to still hold the events originally planned for the cruise but instead livestream them for free.

While some of Northernlion's viewers support the streamer's decision to cancel the cruise and praise him for not doing something he is not comfortable with and prioritising safety, others are disappointed at not being able to go on the anticipated cruise. Many are annoyed at the apparent lack of planning or thought put into the project before announcing it to the world as these concerns had to be brought up by viewers and had not been considered beforehand. On his Subreddit, the whole ordeal has already become a big meme highlighting the outlandishness and absurdity of the whole situation.
