Over the years, Fortnite has reached a massive audience by partnering with iconic entertainment franchises, with each collaboration seemingly bigger than the last. For this year's Fortnitemares, Epic Games announced its new Obsession-themed skin, letting players step into the shoes of Nikki Freeman. While some fans praise the skin for being a faithful recreation of the character portrayed by Inde Navarrette, others criticize the crossover. They argue that playing as an externally controlled character carries deeply negative connotations, turning her loss of autonomy in the movie into a mere joke within the video game.

Turning Horror into a Joke

The Curry Barker underdog hit Obsession set new records at movie theaters because its horror stems from a simple, yet flawlessly executed premise. A wishing rod allows the main character, Bear, to fulfill his deepest desires along with all their darkest implications. His crush, Nikki, pays a high price for this, becoming externally controlled by a supernatural entity. While the movie used its horror premise to deconstruct the "nice-guy" trope and explore the dark nature of forced relationships, Fortnite has repurposed some of its most agonizing moments into playful gameplay elements. Most notably, the moment where she screams "No! No! No!" has been turned into a purchasable emote.

While a vocal segment of the community called for a boycott due to the insensitive handling of the source material, other players downplayed the issue. They argued that the gameplay could be interpreted as the player acting as the malevolent entity controlling Nikki. They also pointed out that various other horror icons with dark backstories have been featured in the game without sparking a similar outrage.

Alleged Censorship

Apart from the discussion surrounding the Nikki skin itself, multiple fans were thoroughly disappointed by how the game handled her blood-splattered appearance. To protect its T-rating, Epic Games opted for black liquid instead of red blood, which many horror purists feel breaks the immersion.

Although critics regard the skin as a watered-down version of the movie character, Navarrette herself has publicly endorsed the collaboration and shared her excitement on social media.

What do you think? Does Nikki truly fit into the colorful world of Fortnite, or is this collaboration just a tone-deaf marketing ploy? Sound off in the comments below!
