Hideo Kojima's highly anticipated action-espionage game has taken a very unexpected turn.
Xbox has officially stepped in as Physint's publisher after PlayStation, which had been part of the project from the very beginning, walked away. PlayStation did not provide a specific reason for its decision to step away from the project.
The new deal with Xbox expands an existing relationship between the two companies. Since 2022, Xbox and Kojima Productions have been collaborating on OD, a mysterious horror game with a cast that includes Hunter Schafer and Sophia Lillis.
As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. Physint has been positioned as Kojima's return to the action-espionage genre that made him famous through Metal Gear, and expectations have been high ever since its unveiling in 2024.
While details remain scarce, Kojima has described it as a project that will blur the line between games and movies, which isn't particularly surprising given his long-standing interest in filmmaking.
PlayStation "Unexpectedly" Stepped Away From Physint
PlayStation Studios confirmed on September 10 that it was no longer collaborating with Kojima Productions on Physint, saying it reached a decision after "careful consideration."
An update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game.

Our relationship...
However, Kojima himself revealed that the situation was more sudden than fans might have expected. According to the legendary game creator, Kojima Productions received a notice from PlayStation in mid-June 2026 that the company would cancel the Physint project.
The studio then spent the following three months searching for another partner to keep the game alive, which he described as "an important project both to me personally and to Kojima Productions."
Will Physint Still Come To PlayStation?
This is where things get particularly interesting. Xbox has confirmed that it will publish Physint, but the game's final platform lineup has not been fully confirmed. That means it is too early to say that Physint will definitely be an Xbox exclusive.
What is clear is that the project is no longer being developed as a PlayStation-published game. The partnership that originally brought Physint to PlayStation has ended, while Xbox has now stepped in to help bring the project to players.
PlayStation has maintained that its relationship with Kojima Productions remains strong, and that they "continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game."
