A storage hunter hoping to find jewelry and antiques was instead left empty-handed, besides a laptop containing industrial quantities of filth.
Before the livestream began, German Twitch streamer Zarbex dreamt of uncovering rare Pokémon cards, designer furniture, or valuable antiques. After several hours of digging through a mystery storage unit, however, reality looked very different.
Most of the roughly $1,200 storage locker consisted of old furniture, kitchen appliances, and everyday household items. But one second-hand laptop ended up stealing the entire show.
Storage Locker Gamble Fails to Payoff
On July 7, the German creator went live on Twitch with his Storage Hunter IRL project after purchasing a mystery storage unit for around €1,000 (about $1,170). The event was organized alongside fellow creator and experienced storage hunter EisteeLePeach, who guided him through the process.
Inspired by the video game Storage Hunter, the goal was simple: buy a storage unit without knowing its contents and find out whether it held hidden treasure or complete disappointment. Like many viewers, he imagined pulling a dusty binder filled with sealed vintage Pokémon cards from one of the boxes.
As the search continued, his earlier prediction about buying "the biggest pile of horse sh** imaginable" seemed increasingly accurate. Aside from worn-out cabinets, an old washing machine, a battered armchair, and a collection of kitchen appliances, very little appeared to have any significant resale value.
Then came the laptop.
The "Grandma" Laptop
Among the remaining items was an old laptop. Nothing about the device itself seemed particularly valuable, but its contents quickly became the most talked-about moment of the entire stream.
While browsing through the files, the streamer opened a folder that reportedly contained several amateur adult videos. Most of the file names were unusual enough, but one stood out immediately. One video was simply titled "Oma", the German word for grandma. The contents of the file were never shown to viewers (probably for the best), but the discovery instantly became the focus of the stream.
The files apparently belonged to the laptop's previous owner rather than the streamer himself, prompting thousands of chat messages, memes, and reactions. Instead of uncovering a hidden fortune, viewers were left talking about what quickly became known as the "Grandma laptop."
He may not have discovered anything valuable, like an unreleased Adidas collection, but the laptop generated just as much discussion among viewers as any rare collectible could have.
Financially, the gamble doesn't appear to have paid off. According to the livestream, the recovered items were estimated to be worth only a little over $600, spread across dozens of relatively inexpensive household items.
Have you ever gone storage hunting? Did you find anything as exciting as Zarbex?
