The new patch brings changes to ranged top laners, teleport, and melee supports, as well as buffs and nerfs for numerous pro-play picks.
Patch 26.19 is the first of two direct Worlds patches for League of Legends. According to Matthew “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison, Lead Gameplay Designer at Riot Games, Worlds 2026 will be played on Patch 26.20. That is why Riot is moving carefully: no massive system reworks, but targeted changes to pro-play picks, top lane balance, supports, and several champions that are currently too strong or too weak.
Ranged Top Is Staying – But It Should Feel Less Miserable for Melees
One of the most interesting points concerns ranged top laners. Phroxzon openly says that Riot understands the complaints. When ranged tops become too strong, they can create what he describes as “degraded low gameplay states” – lanes where the melee player has very little meaningful interaction. Still, Riot does not want to remove ranged top as a concept.
The direction is more about making ranged tops playable without letting them completely suffocate melee matchups. Before Worlds, Riot therefore wants to make only smaller systemic adjustments. Long-term, that could also make it easier to balance champions like Vayne more around bot lane without every buff immediately becoming a top-lane problem.
That approach makes sense. The issue with ranged top is rarely that these picks exist at all. It becomes problematic when the lane opponent spends ten minutes barely getting to make meaningful decisions. Riot seems more interested in fixing those extreme matchup states than in banning an entire champion class from the role.
Top Lane Gets More Agency Through Teleport
Riot also sees an interesting skill-bracket problem: according to Phroxzon, top lane is slightly weaker relative to bot lane at higher levels of play, while top remains both popular and strong in regular play.
That is why Riot is not simply buffing the entire role. Instead, the Teleport cooldown is being improved through the Top Role Quest. Better players use Teleport much more efficiently, so Riot can increase high-level agency this way without completely reshaping low-Elo top lane.
Split-push players in particular could benefit. If top laners can pressure side lanes more reliably while still joining objectives or teamfights on time, the role gains more map influence without Riot needing to increase its raw laning power.
Melee Supports Get Help After the Roaming Nerfs
Patch 26.16 significantly reduced support roaming. According to Phroxzon, early roaming before Grub spawn is now back around the level Riot wanted – especially in pro play.
The side effect is that enchanters and ranged supports have started to dominate more again. Riot is therefore increasing health regeneration for melee supports so engage tanks can survive poke better and still get another chance to find an engage after a bad trade.
This is explicitly not meant to be a huge meta swing. Riot simply does not want ranged supports to control lane so hard that melee supports are effectively removed from the game after taking one bad chunk of poke. Right before Worlds, that matters a lot because support metas can shape drafts heavily.
Nasus Is Being Nerfed Again – Because His New Strength Is Working Too Well
Nasus is back on the nerf list. Riot still believes that simple champions should be allowed to perform well even in higher skill brackets. Simplicity alone is not a reason to nerf a champion, according to Phroxzon.
The issue is that Nasus has genuinely become too strong. Since the change to four Q stacks from regular last hits, he has much clearer success conditions: in free matchups, he scales extremely reliably, while real lane pressure still keeps him more controllable.
That sounds healthy in theory, but it creates a team problem. If the lane opponent cannot effectively stop Nasus, the rest of the team later has to deal with an already heavily scaled champion despite having had very little influence over that process themselves. Riot therefore seems happy with the basic shape of his kit, but wants his overall power level slightly lower.
Lucian Mid Is Coming Back – And the Community Is Skeptical
Lucian is getting one of the more interesting treatments in the patch: Riot plans to buff him for mid lane while nerfing his bot-lane version at the same time.
That is almost a reversal of the direction from previous years. Lucian was deliberately tied more strongly to supports in the past to push him out of solo lanes. Now Riot seems willing to give Mid Lucian some room again.
The Reddit reaction is mixed. Some players are asking why Riot wants Mid Lucian back at all when his passive was intentionally redesigned around playing with a support. Others think Riot may be trying to create more AD-mid options and indirectly make AP junglers more attractive.
Orianna, Ryze and Other Pro Picks Get Hit Before Worlds
The nerf list also includes Vi, Nocturne, Poppy, Orianna, Rumble, Ryze and Lucian Bot. That is a list that looks heavily pro-play focused.
Orianna in particular is already causing discussion in the community. Several Reddit users point out that her Solo Queue win rate is not especially strong and therefore see the nerf as a clear Worlds-oriented move. That is typical right before international events: a champion can look average in regular play but still have too much draft priority through flexibility, reliable teamfighting or coordinated pro execution.
On the buff side, Riot is helping Elise, Fiora, Volibear, Aatrox, Aphelios, Draven, Lucian Mid, Kha’Zix, Lillia and Aurora. That suggests Riot wants to open up more draft options before Worlds without completely rebuilding the meta.
26.19 Is Clearly a Worlds Patch
The community is right about one thing: Patch 26.19 is much more focused on pro play than a normal Solo Queue patch. But Phroxzon says that pretty clearly himself. This is the first of two Worlds updates before 26.20 becomes the tournament patch.
So Riot is not trying to solve every Solo Queue problem right now. The priority is getting the Worlds meta into a healthier state: ranged top should be less oppressive, top lane gets targeted agency, melee supports should become more competitive again, and classic pro picks like Orianna, Vi or Rumble are being pulled back a little. Patch 26.19 may not look spectacular for regular players. For Worlds, though, it could end up being one of the most important patches of the year.
